Jones Positive Ahead Of Olympic Qualifier

As Ghana-South Africa clash provides main attraction in the African Olympic Games Qualifiers, the head coach of Ghana’s men’s Olympic football team, Cecil Jones Attuquayfio remains positive.

He hopes the five foreign-based players he has included in his squad for Saturday’s Beijing 2008 qualifiers against South Africa can help the team secure their first win.

The match takes place in the quiet town of Klerksdorp, some 200 kilometres from the city of Johannesburg.

The 2000 CAF African Coach of the Year invited Asamaoh Gyan (Udinese, Italy), Bernard Kumordzi (Panionios, Greece), Isaac Vorsah (TSG Hoffenheim, Germany) Prince Tagoe (Al Shabbab, UAE) and skipper, Micheal Helegbe (Guingamp).

They trained with 13 locally-based professionals in Accra on Wednesday before leaving for South Africa.

The Black Meteors are at the foot of the three-nation table with no points after losing 2-3 away to Nigeria in their opening fixture.

Steve Komphela, the ‘Amaglug-Glug’ coach is also a happy man with the arrival of his captain Lance Davids who plies his trade with Swedish first division, Djugardens IF.

The South Africans will be without the suspended pair of Thapelo Tshilo and Sibusiso Hadebe. The re-inclusion of the exciting and in-form SuperSport United midfielder Dane Klate has however boosted the team’s morale.

In other qualifiers, Zambia is expected to increase their lead at the top of Group B against Senegal who have amassed just a point. Still in the group, the Baby Elephants of Ivory Coast host Mali and will be counting on a slip to catch up at the top.

Cameroon’s Indomitable Cubs will be seeking to increase their four point account and oust leaders Morocco in Group C’s top liner. Guinea will host Botswana in the other Group C clash.
