Herbert Mensah To Take Over Hearts

Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko Chairman, Herbert Amponsah Mensah is expected to take over as the Chairman of Accra Hearts of Oak next week following a meeting yesterday, with the Board Chairman, Ato Ahwoi.

In a shock new twist to the long-running saga of dwindling fortunes of Accra Hearts of Oak, it has been confirmed that meetings between the Board Chairman Ato Ahwoi and Herbert Mensah have been going for a month now, but the conclusive meeting was held yesterday with the stakeholders of the Phobian fraternity.

A source close to Herbert Mensah confirmed the news and added: “we are 80% through as to how the team should be run when Herbert takes over, possibly next week.” The source said “it is likely he will not make massive changes but rather, will seek to encourage old faces like Harry (Zakkour) to join the boat.”

Herbert Mensah has been evasive over the matter, but hinted his move to the newspaper, “Soccer Express” last Monday. He said: “Hearts have been extremely successful for the past six years on the field. They have won the league title six times, the Champions League, the CAF Super Cup and qualified for the World Clubs Championship.” “Hearts have won on the field but appear to be struggling off the field. In many ways they are at a crunch when they have to make or take decisions, which will determine how they fare over the next five years.” Mensah concluded.

Meanwhile Haruna Mohammed, the long-time PRO of Herbert Mensah told GHANAWEB that, the former Kumasi Asante Kotoko boss will soon be quitting King Faisal. He failed to elaborate and answered “no comment now” to the question of Herbert Mensah’s take over of Hearts.

With the news gaining ground in Accra, supporters of Hearts have welcomed the news and hailed Herbert Mensah as Roman Abrahamovic, the Russian businessman who took over Chelsea at the beginning of this season in England and injecting the team with world class players.

This expected take over can avert the departure of Hearts’s most prized asset Bernard Dong Bortey. As noted for making big signings, Herbert Mensah is also expected to buy some of the premiership’s top players to augment the team which is expected to shed some seven top players on a free transfer. But the future of Coach Herbert Addo will remain in doubt. Mensah in his reign as the boss of Asante Kotoko and King Faisal brought in German coaches to run the teams.
