Hearts and Olympic to vie for Millennium City Cup

Accra, May 6, GNA - City rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics will clash in the maiden edition of the Millennium City Cup match on Sunday, May 23 at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra. The Millennium City Cup is an initiative of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) which is aimed at raising funds for an AMA Education Endowment Fund.

The Education Fund was set up to generate funds for the construction of classrooms in the various communities in view of the impending termination of the shift-educational system. Dr Alfred Vanderpuije, Chief Executive Officer of the AMA said at the launch of the event on Thursday that the Assembly has adopted football as one of the possible avenues to realize financial support for the educational project.

He said the project is in line with achieving the Millennium Development Goal on education which mandates that children from four years and above must be in school by year 2020.

Dr Vanderpuije added that the move is also to ensure that children have benefit of quality education to become good future leaders. The AMA Chief Executive explained that the choice of the two city rivals is due to their great tradition of being based in the capital adding that proceeds from the match will be channelled towards the targeted construction of 50 18-unit classrooms to accommodate the about 71,000 children to be affected by the system.

Dr Vanderpuije said that it is expected that the event will be an annual affair with the two clubs as contenders. Nii Nortey Dua, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports assured of his outfit's support towards making the event a success.
