Goldfields-Kotoko to Smoke Peace Pipe

Efforts to resolve the tensions between supporters of Obuasi Goldfields and Kumasi Asante Kotoko are on course, the Managing Director of Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC) Obuasi, Mr.Daniel Owiredu, has revealed.

Mr. Owiredu, who was speaking to GNA Sports at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium on the appointment of Captain Andy Sam (Rtd.) as the new Chief Executive of Obuasi Goldfields Sporting Club, stressed that "efforts are underway to resolve the issue".

The Managing Director said the company now has "100 percent ownership" of the club and called for press support for the new management to enable Goldfields to recapture its lost glory.

"This is the time to support Andy's team to perform since it is the crucial period in the history of Goldfields", he said.

Mr. Owiredu expressed optimism about the new management, since according to him the new Chief Executive had held a lot of management positions.

Describing Capt. Sam as a sportsman of many parts, the Managing Director said the Chief Executive has great exploits in sports while at school "with a lot of knowledge in soccer, athletics and the rest. He played competitive hockey for Ghana and also played various roles in sports when he was in the Ghana Army."

Mr. Owiredu commended Mr. Guss Kessie, the former Acting Managing Director of the club and his management team for the good work done to sustain the club over the period.

Capt. Sam who also spoke to GNA Sports, admitted that there were high expectations from the stakeholders and that he and his team would do their best to recapture the past glory of Goldfields.

"I am very excited for being here, though the challenge is not easy but I have a capable team to work with", he said.
