Ghana ready for Ivorians in a knockout

Accra, 14 Dec, GNA - Ghana's national Under 23 team, the Black Meteors appear set to out class their Ivorian counterparts come Sunday in a repeat of last Sunday's fate when the national Under 17 team beat the Baby Elephants by their Ghanaian counterparts when the two clashed at the Sunyani Coronation Park last week.

This time around, the match, which is the qualifier for the 2007 All Africa Games comes in the wake of the Starlets 2-0 victory over their Ivorian counterparts to progress on the away goal rule after the two encounters had ended 3-3 on aggregate to progress to the next stage of the Africa Under 17 Championship.

The Black Starlets however would be the first to agree that they were in a match of their lives to scale over the Ivorians, and it is for this reason that the Black Meteors have to brace themselves for a tough game, since their opponents will come into the match with one aim to ensure that any form of lightening does not strike them twice. With the Ivorians determined to reassert their recent dominance over the Ghanaians in junior game, the vast experience of one of Ghana's most successful coaches, 'Sir' Cecil Jones Attuquayefio, who recently returned from France with his team would be required to map out a winning strategy.

It is not surprising that the double winner on the continental club title decided to augment his team with players like Mohammed Tuaha Khamix, Yaw Frimpong, Frank Andoh and Isaac Vorsah after their training tour in France to give the team the cutting edge against the Ivorians. The newly called players are expected to complement the effort of skipper Michael Helegbe and his colleagues in their quest to neutralize the efforts of their opponents.

The Meteors have already engaged in a series of friendly matches to fine-tune their preparations for this crucial encounter and cannot therefore afford to slip at this crucial time.

Though any win will be welcome news, the Meteors need to win by a big margin to make the second leg in Abidjan a mere formality having in mind how strong their opponents are at home.

In defence, the likes of Charles Vardis, Isaac Vorsah and Michael Akuffo among others will have to work overtime to contain their skilful opponents who play as a cohesive unit.

For the midfield, eyes will be on Anthony Annan, Abraham Annan and Tauha Khamix to form a linkage to feed the attack led by Michael Helegbe and Alex Asamoah.

The second leg comes off in a fortnight time at Abidjan and the winner of the tie will face Nigeria in another two-legged affair.
