Ghana Amputee Football Federation to Launch Cup of African Nations for Amputee in Accra

Ghana have been given the rights to host the Cup of African Nations for Amputee Football (CANAF 2011) scheduled for 15th -25th October, 2011. This follows the impressive performance of the Black Challenge, the National Amputee Football Team, at the Amputee World Cup in Argentina in October, 2010, where the team placed 6th and became the first African nation to ever reach the quarter final stage of the 60 year-old competition. Ghana became the first African Champions in 2007, when they won the 1st Cup of African Nations for Amputee Football (CANAF 2007) in Sierra Leone. In 2009, the Black Challenge represented Africa in the Coppa Brotherhood tournament in Argentina, placing fourth among the best countries in Amputee football in the world.
At least twelve (12) African countries, namely, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Angola, South Africa, DR Congo, Algeria, Kenya, Niger, Rwanda, Mali and Ghana are expected to gather in Accra to compete for the coveted trophy. Already, five (5) nations have confirmed their participation; they are Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Niger and Angola.
At a special Media Launch scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 31st May, 2011 at Alisa Hotel and sponsored by Emperor Gaza Foundation and Alisa Hotel, the President of the Ghana Amputee Football Federation (GAFF) who doubles as the President of the Amputee Football Federation of Africa (AFFA), Mr Francis Adjetey Sowah, will outline the programme of activities lined up for the tournament, formation of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) as well as brief the media on Ghana’s state of preparedness for the tournament and sponsorship issues.
Key personalities and corporate bodies involved in Amputee Football will be present at the ceremony. Corporate bodies and individuals desirous of sponsoring or supporting CANAF 2011 are entreated to attend the Media Launch to meet the Federation or contact Mr Sowah for discussions.
