Gawsoc cries for sponsorship

As the Greater Accra Women Soccer Committee league (GAWSOC) enters its fourth week on Saturday, the big question that comes to mind is whether it could go beyond the first round.

For the past two years, the league matches had to be abrogated due to financial constraints faced by most of the clubs.

Speaking to the GNA sports in Accra on Friday, Mr Fred Gyan-Akoto, chairman of the committee said with the exception of Ghatel and Post Ladies who enjoy full sponsorship from their mother companies, (Ghana Telecom and Ghana Post), the rest are financed by private individuals who find it difficult to sustain the teams.

Mr Akoto regretted that ever since women soccer was introduced 10 years ago, it has been struggling to gain recognition but to no avail.

"While the Premier and Division One leagues are enjoying some form of sponsorship from Star Brewery and Metro Television, GAWSOC is crying for sponsorship.''

He said women soccer has now achieve international fame and Ghana, as a football nation, should do more to sustain and improve upon the game.

"It is out of these league matches that most of the talented players that form the Black Queens came. In this age that much is being done to curb youth unemployment, it is sad that not much is being done to help our girls".

Mr Akoto commended Ghana Post for sponsoring this year's league and called on other companies and individuals, who are interested in women football, to come to their aid.

Meanwhile, the fourth week thrills continue at all the league centres as Post Ladies play host to La Ladies in what should be a titanic duel at the Darkuman Cable and Wireless Park in the topmost encounter.

At the Nungua Police Barrier Park, Nungua Ladies will lock horns with Ghatel Ladies of Accra while Bluna Ladies sort things out with Ashaiman Ladies at Tema Mante-Din School Park.

Great Mawuena Ladies play host to Ghatel Ladies of Takoradi at the Town Council Line Park on Sunday.
