GHANSU President Suspects Foul Play In Ticket Allocation

Four supporters’ groups in Ghana had their ticket allocations for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa blocked because they failed to meet the payment deadline.

However, the president of GHANSU (the Ghana National Supporters Union), Abraham Boakye, whose group has been affected, told Goal.com he suspects power play between World Cup telecommunication sponsor MTN and their local sponsor Globacom, a mobile network operator.

Boakye told Goal.com: “We are being sponsored by Globacom and you know it is MTN which is sponsoring the World Cup. So there is an already existing corporate competition. Globacom has the money and we have the money but I think MTN doesn’t want us to come because we are being sponsored by Glo.”

Boakye, who has travelled far and wide with the national team to almost every major international tournament said going to the World Cup is not about buying tickets alone but it takes proper planning to ensure a successful stay for his members.

The "One Man Supporter" said: “It goes beyond just buying game tickets. It needs a lot of money. We need to plan for our air fare, accommodation and chop money. We can’t buy tickets when all these things are not in place.

“Nobody can threaten us. God is alive and we will go to the World Cup. We have sown and will reap. We want to approach the government to intervene and help us. We are still looking for money to take a lot of people to support the Black Stars. We shall make it even at the 11th hour.”

Other affected groups that failed to meet the March 30, 2010 deadline are the BA Black Stars, Supporters Union of Ghana (SUGHA), and Nationwide Supporters Union (NSU).

The Ghana Football Association said after several reminders, their provision has been reallocated to the unsuccessful applicants by FIFA.
