GFA commemorates May 9 Stadium disaster

Accra, May 8, GNA - The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed its profound condolences to the bereaved families of the victims of May 9 Stadium disaster. One hundred and twenty-seven football fans lost their lives following a stampede during a Premier League match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra in 2001.

The message of condolence was contained in a statement signed by the General Secretary of the GFA, Kofi Nsiah. "On this occasion, we wish to appeal to all loving football administrators, security officers, medicals and indeed sports loving Ghanaians to co-operate with the GFA and the Premier League Board (PLB) to prevent the re-occurrence of this unfortunate incidence," the message said.

"Let us constantly remind ourselves that never again should such a tragedy befall the nation" And may the souls of our departed football enthusiasts rest in perfect peace", it concluded. 08 May 09
