From Zero to Hero for Ghanaian Striker

Ever dreamed of coming from nowhere to score the winning goal in the last minute of a vital cup match and becoming a hero overnight? For most of us who imagine this just before we fall asleep it will remain just that: a dream.

But all would-be Peter Ndlovus can take inspiration from the remarkable story of Roy Esandoh, 25. "This game is just crazy," laughed the overnight legend who scored the winning goal for Wycombe Wanderers in England's Football Association (FA) cup quarter final against Premiership side Leicester City last weekend.

Two weeks ago, Esandoh, who lived in Ghana until he was 16, was unemployed and down on his luck. His opportunity came after reading about an advertisement saying 'Striker Wanted'.

Wycombe, a small team in England's second division, were badly hit by injuries just before their big match against Leicester. Within days they had signed Esandoh on a two-week contract on the basis simply of his curriculum vitae.

"If people out there can't believe it just imagine how I feel," said Esandoh, clearly still recovering from seeing his dream come true-and it didn't end there. Having never trained with his new club and without knowing the names of his team-mates, Roy found himself on the substitutes' bench for the quarter final.

At 1-1, Esandoh's manager threw him on in a last-minute gamble. "Next thing I know the ball's right in front of me."& Esandoh headed powerfully past the keeper for the winning goal, setting off wild celebrations.

Amazingly, lowly Wycombe will now play the might of Liverpool in the semi- final on April 7th or 8th. But the prospect of matching the likes of Emile Heskey, Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler will not worry Roy Esandoh.

"I'm still thinking about the goal," he said, still in dreamland. If he doesn't know the names of his team-mates yet, then he can rest assured that they, and viewers of the FA cup around the world, certainly know his.
