Football coach faces assault charge

Sunyani, Jan. 12, GNA - Two top officials of Gamba All Blacks Football club were on Thursday arraigned before a Magistrate Court "B" in Sunyani for assaulting a police constable after the Club's encounter with Tano Bofoakwa in Sunyani in their Onetouch Premier league.

Windsor Kofi Abbrey, assistant coach and Nana James Akwando Nunoo, pleaded not guilty to the charges of assault of a public officer and resisting arrest.

They were granted five million cedis bail each with a surety and were ordered to reappear on February 22, this year.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Martin Defeamaphor told the court, presided by Mr. Robert Quanson, that on January 10 this year, the accused and other officials led the team to honour the match at the Sunyani Coronation Park.

He said the match ended 2-0 in favour of Tano Bofoakwa but Mr. Abbrey, a former footballer, not pleased with the result started throwing missiles at some jubilating fans of Bofoakwa.

Police Constable Isaac Frimpong of the Regional Police Headquarters quickly moved in to accost Abbrey but the latter gave him a heavy slap and took to his heels but some other policemen to the support of the colleague in an attempt to arrest him.

ASP Defeamaphor said Abbrey resisted arrest and Nana Akwando joined his colleague to attack the police but they were overpowered and arrested.
