A football fan, Robert Arthur, who slapped a police officer on duty during the match between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak in Kumasi on June 23, has been arrested.

Arthur slapped the peace officer in protest against his arrest when he jumped over the fence wall to assault a "ball boy" at the stadium.

The police officer (name withheld) had earlier in the day been the object of attack by one Kwesi Boamah, 24, a trader.

When Boamah was refused entry into the stadium, which was then full, he threw bagged iced water at the policeman and insulted him as well.

Sources close to the Regional Police Command disclosed that another football fan, Kwame Boadu, 24, and a trader was also arreste d together with one Edward Kyei for removing plastic chairs at the popular stand and the centerline for no apparent reason.

All the fans who misconducted themselves during the match have been arrested by the central police CID, pending further investigations.

When Inspector Kwame Tawiah, the public relations officer at the Central Police Station, was contacted, he confirmed the story.

He said after the investigations they will be arraigned before a law court.

Inspector Tawiah, therefore, advised the hooligans among football fans to desist from such acts and cooperate with the police at the stadium to ensure their safety.

He said the police are friends to the public and not enemies to warrant such attacks.
