Criteria for U-17 Championship outlined

Accra, Aug. 4, GNA - Coca-Cola Ghana Limited, sponsors of the first ever U-17 Youth championship has outlined the modus operandi for the event.

The competition, which is expected to kick start on August 20 in the Ashanti Region is aimed at unearthing talents at the grassroots level to feature for the juvenile national teams.

Anthony Chinebua, Operations Marketing Manager of Coca-Cola Ghana Limited said at an orientation programme on Tuesday that the necessary arrangements have been put in place for successful take-off of the championship.

He explained that the best eight clubs from each Region to be determined by the respective Regional Football Associations (RFA) will play on a knockout basis to determine the eventual winner to represent the Region.

Chinebua announced that the Regional event will take a short break after the Eastern Regional championship for the impending FIFA World Cup trophy tour as part of activities towards the first ever Mundial to be staged on African soil next year in South Africa.

He added that the remaining eight regions will have their turn next year ahead of the national championship which will feature two teams each from only Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions due to the high presence of colts clubs in the two Regions.

The other eight Regions, he said will be represented by the winners of the regional events.

Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) commended Coca-Cola Ghana Limited for their tremendous support towards the development of football in the country.

He expressed the hope that the relationship between the GFA and the beverage-producing outfit will "last in perpetuity" for the advancement of football.

The national U-17 Championship, formerly an annual affair was last honored in 2006 in Tamale and sponsored by the GFA. 04 Aug. 09
