Ghana topflight Bechem United have taken to agriculture to raise capital to propel their Premier League ambitions, according to club chairman Kingsley Osei Bonsu.

The Brong Ahafo side re-joined the local flagship competition in 2013, following a brief stint in 2011-12 which ended in relegation.

Clubs have consistently lamented the lack of adequate financial support in helping their ambitions, and it appears Bechem have found a viable alternative source of capital.

“We have started the agricultural projects already and it is part of several avenue of the club to gain resources to help us finance ourselves,” Bonsu told Gazzetta Ghana.

“We have over a thousand birds at the moment and there’s also a pig farm project we are undertaking. All these are part of the club and it is really helping us.

“You know we feed our players twice a day and so the products of the poultry will be used to feed them, while the birds will hit the market by the end of this year to supplement our finances.”

Bechem finished the 2014-15 league campaign on the 12th spot, winning 12, drawing five and losing 13 of 30 games.

Ashanti Gold, reigning champions of the competition, took home a cash prize of GHC50.00 which has been described as “peanut” by club chief executive officer Cudjoe Fianoo.
