Asamoah rejects Ghana overtures

Wednesday 4th October 2000

Schalke 04 striker Gerald Asamoah has refused the chance to make his debut for Ghana this weekend, deciding to keep his international options open after recently being handed a German passport.

Asamoah had been selected for the Ghanian side to take on Zimbabwe, but cancelled his trip on Wednesday. If he did make his debut for the African side he would jeopardise his chances of representing Germany.

He said: "The guys from Ghana put me under a lot of pressure, but I am only 22 and I don’t want to announce my final decision yet.

"I still have lot of time left, now I want to focus on the Bundesliga and Schalke."

The player has a fight on his hands to hold down a regular place in the Schalke side, with Danish international Ebbe Sand and Belgium star Emile Mpenza in fine form, leading the Bundesliga goalscoring charts with six goals each.
