Christine Churcher Quits?

The nation could soon see another bye election if moves to get the ruling NPP MP for Cape Coast and former Minister of Science and Environment, Hon. Christine Churcher, abdicate her parliamentary seat succeeds.

Currently there are strong indications that she has already agreed to call her supporters to quit her seat and take up an appointment she has secured outside the country.

The key reason for the call for Churcher?s resignation by her supporters, according to insiders, is because of her removal in the recent ministerial reshuffle by President Kufuor, which they interpret as an attempt to humiliate her.

The resignation calls by foot soldiers of Churcher have raised concerns within the party in Cape Coast and sent down fears through the spines of supporters of Mr. Edwin Godwin Buckman and Sally Garbrah, two opposition candidate?s who can never win the seat back in any bye- election.

But what is worrying to most NPP supporters is that what started as speculation has gained enough grounds such that NPP activists in Cape Coast cannot discern the veracity of Churcher?s acquiescence or fore bearance.

The past week has witnessed three different delegations from aggrieved supporters of the MP making frantic efforts to locate Churcher, who is said to be out of her regular residence in Accra.

Reports gathered that the absence of the Iron Lady of the Central Region politics in the public domain has led to regular enquiries by some NPP National Executives and some Council of State Members trooping to the residence regularly.

Ms Churcher was axed in the recent reshuffle by the President after several years as a Minister and at a time when 80 top scientists across the globe and 10 top colleagues Environment and Science ministers were being hosted at a conference in Accra.
