Muslim groups urged to help promote peace

Kumasi, April 29, GNA- Madam Pamela E. Bridgewater, the out-going Ambassador of the United States of America (USA), has admonished the Muslim groups in the country to work together towards a common goal of tolerance and peace to ensure development in their communities. Living in harmony, she added will also facilitate the democratic principles of the country, as the elections draw nearer.

Madam Bridgewater was addressing some members of the Muslim community in Kumasi on Monday during a reception held in her honour by some Muslim groups in Ashanti Region. She indicated that, during her time in office, she has been able to promote a healthy relationship between the U.S. and Ghana's Muslim communities, by improving the lives of ordinary people throughout the country.

The Ambassador mentioned the construction of an Islamic Education Unit and a community centre at Nima, as well as the construction of a clinic in Kumasi as some of the achievements. "We also have sponsored prominent Muslim leaders through our international visitors programme as well as Muslim students for an academic year in an American high school as part of our Youth Exchange Programme", she added.

Madam Bridgewater assured them that the friendship established between USA and the Muslim communities will continue to thrive. Mr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, Ashanti Regional Minister, commended the U.S. government, saying they do not discriminate against people by creed or colour.

This, he noted has been the foundation of America government and has promoted development in the U.S. over the years. He also wished the Ambassador farewell as she leaves Ghana and assured her of a strong relationship between the country and U.S.A. Sheik Abdul Mumim Hacran, Regional Deputy Chief Imam, expressed gratitude to the Ambassador for the cordial relationship that had existed between Muslims and the United States. The U.S. Mission, he noted, has helped the Muslim friends to ensure accelerated growth in the country.

Hajia Alimatu Ibrahim, President of the Muslim Women's Association in Ashanti Region on her part, stated that Madam Bridgewater has helped with the promotion of business in Muslim communities and the U.S.A. She added that Madam Bridgewater has helped the Association fight against unemployment and has empowered women to be enlightened. She called on the U.S. government to formulate policies that would ensure peace in the world.

In a related development the Ashanti Regional Minister presented a Kente cloth and a stool to the Ambassador.
