Regional Council strategises for peace

The Western Regional Peace Council (WRPC) has held a two-day meeting in Takoradi to map out strategies to ensure continued peace in the region.

Mr George Amoh, Director of Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution of the Council, noted that although Ghana was enjoying peace, there was still the need for Ghanaians to brace themselves and develop mechanisms to prevent any eventualities.

Mr Amoh noted that elections were normally characterized by disturbances, leading to conflicts, and therefore with the impending 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections there was the need to plan against unforeseen circumstances.

The Council, he said, was established in 2004 by the government, with a broad spectrum of members whose experience would be tapped to achieve the desired results, and ensure absolute peace in the region.

The Council is made up of traditionalists, Muslims, the Clergy, and members of the Civil Society.

Some of the members, speaking in turns, pledged to work hard for the region to maintain its peaceful atmosphere for others to emulate.

They, however, called for co-operation from the populace to ensure the success of the Council.
