Methodist Bishop urged Akyems to preserve the Birim River

Koforidua, March 27, GNA - Right Reverend Frederick Nnuroh, Bishop of the Koforidua Diocese of the Methodist Church, has called on Akyems to fight for the protection of the Birim River. He explained that if efforts were not made to save the Birim River now, very soon the activities of illegal miners among others could destroy the Birim River.

He said the pride of Akyems which was reflected in the popular saying that 93a true Akyem citizen drinks the waters of the Birim River," would be no more.

Rt. Rev. Nnuroh was preaching the sermon at the dedication of 100,000 Ghana cedis Manse of Adweso Calvary Methodist Church near Koforidua on Sunday.

He observed that many streams and rivers in the country which used to serve as sources of drinking water for many communities had dried up due to human activities and now many of those communities were having serious water problems.

Rt. Rev. Nnuroh advised Ghanaians to learn from the Israelis who had preserved the streams, rivers and the wells mentioned in the Bible since the time of Abraham till date.

He called on Ghanaians to preserve the natural resources of the country especially water resources.

Giving a short history of the Manse, Mr Odei Adjei, Chairman of the Building Committee of the Church, said the six bedroom Manse with a two bedroom outer house, two garages, a store and hand dug well was purchased at 75,000 Ghana cedis and was given a facelift at a cost of 25,000 Ghana cedis.
