Churches should promote literacy among members-Chairperson

Kumasi, June 26, GNA - The Chairperson of the Asante Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Reverend Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong has called on religious organisations to mobilize resources in support of literacy programmes, to help reduce illiteracy, ignorance and poverty among members.

He cited that "An educated Christian would be better positioned to appreciate the gospel as well as his fundamental human rights and civic responsibilities towards national development." Rev. Opuni-Frimpong made the appeal when received quantities of English, Mathematics and Science books on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Presbyterian Education Unit, in Kumasi. The books were donated by Mr. Kwaku Bondah-Kobo, a Ghanaian Presbyterian in the United States of America for distribution to about 50 schools under the Unit.

Rev. Opuni-Frimpong said that he was hopeful that the donation of the books would facilitate teaching and learning to enhance education in the area and asked beneficiary schools to take good care of the books. Mr. Bondah-Kobo called on Ghanaians living abroad to invest in education back home to boost the country's development. 26 June 10
