District sports festival end at Asuogyaman

A FOUR-DAY athletics and games festival organised by the Asuogyaman District Basic Schools Association for six zones ended at Senchi Ferry Methodist school grounds.

The games festival, the 13th to be held in the district, was aimed at selecting a zonal squad for the Eastern Regional competition to be held at Abetifi-Kwahu from August 11 to 17, 2002. The zones were Anum/Boso, Frankadua, Apeguso, Senchi and Gyakiti.

Addressing 1,000 participants and officials at the closing session, the District Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Miss Augustina Manko Aboagye, commended them for their sportsmanship spirit and discipline which she noted is the hallmark of every successful organisation.

Miss Aboagye reiterated the government’s determination to make basic education accessible to every Ghanaian child. She disclosed that the GES in the district has instituted a mechanism that would enable the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) to work.

The director therefore appealed to chiefs, opinion leaders and students to educate the people in order to take advantage of the facilities and send all school-going age children to school.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Dr Godfred Kofi Siaw, told the gathering that a permanent sports development officer would soon be stationed at the district assembly to unearth talents in the area.

Dr Siaw said the games have indicated to him that there are lots of potentials in the district which can be tapped and developed as national assets.

The District Physical Education Organiser, Mr Dallas Afflu, remarked that the zeal among officials and participants was a clear indication that the district would go places in future.

Mr Afflu expressed his gratitude to all those who were put in charge of various disciplines exhibiting impartiality which gave the students the tonic to be disciplined throughout the competition.

He, however, advised townsmen and women from Senchi and other areas to always comport themselves whenever the schools or the district organises competitions noting that much as the nation is preaching against indiscipline among the youth, it would not entertain such behaviours for the sake of home support.

Present were Nana Offei Budu Agyemang, Senchihene, Nana Osei Gyensare, Kyidomhene of Komena and some heads of educational institutions.
