I curse them everyday in the comfort of my car whenever they encroach on my driving space or see them contravene our traffic laws with such unbridled impunity and often wish someone would get rid of this nuisance from our streets! But then again, I notice how easy it is to advocate the ban of certain groups or activities when you don't belong to them or use their services. Have you any idea the number of jobs the Okada industry has created on it's own? It's not just the riders who have found work, it's spawned off many ancillary jobs like importing, wholesalers, mechanics, not to mention the food and water they consume in the course of their work, not even the government could have created this number of jobs if they tried. They are now an integral part of the economy that you just cannot wish away by a stroke of a magic wand. The problem that you have with them can be overcome if their activities are recognised, regulated and monitored. This is how GPRTU came into existence in order to form a union whose members were bound by regulations. If the current laws do not permit the use of motor cycles as commercial vehicles then we need amendments to regularise their activities. They need education on the proper use of their motorcycles on our roads. Get rid of Okada and wonder why armed robbery had suddenly shot up in your area!

A ban is 100 % counterproductive.

"Helping" transportation by increasing the death tolls on our road?
Even Lagos State has banned okada drivers. But in Ghana, we will wait until they became unbearable before we try to find a solution.

We agree!
They are providing a service needed by some people. They need to be tax, regulated, and formalized. It just may be that that are certain areas they will not be allowed.
But, whatever the government chooses to do, they ought to have objective data to back up proposals, new regulations, etc.
Greetings.

Okadas have no place on our city roads. They are more of a nuisance than any benefit to anyone. The reason why there is a proliferation of Okadas in our cities with no action is because most of them are owned by the police. I know at least 5 people who have been maimed by Okadas. Get them out of our streets in the cities. Okadas have been banned in capital cities in Liberia and Sierra Leone, at least on main roads, because of the same reasons. Somebody do something before it becomes another 'galamsey' tragedy
