We must say the proposal by the Akufo Addo government "...to build 1 million toilet facilities across Ghana...a toilet in every house...", is one of the the most hare-brained ideas we've heard Akufo Addo's government make to date.
Our sense is, in the current Ghanaian context, due to the severe lack of urban facilities, what is needed for existing homes are really community toilets built to current environmental standards to protect land and water, that are still easily and safely accessible by women, the old, and handicapped, etc., and are properly managed, to encourage use. Those are the kinds of toilet facilities (solar-lighted and powered, surely), Ghana needs, even along the beaches, and waterways.
Then, of course, ensure that all proposed homes have toilets in the plans according to density planned for the dwelling.
A toilet that does not smell is easily attainable, including waterless/Ecosan systems!
But, the government must demonstrate better intelligence. They must prove their case and plans with real data.

After 60 years of so-called political independence, the problems of Ghana seem to be greater than what Nkrumah faced in 1952. Getting independence, was indeed, the easier task compared to developing Ghana.
We read of the "intelligentsia" who championed the fight for independence. Today that word has disappeared from the Ghanaian vocabulary. We have in their place pseudo-scholars who shall soon been threatening strikes if their research and book allowances are not paid. They said it has been delayed.
We also have a group of mentally warped midgets with some modicum of literacy whose daily habit is to insult people on social media, on radios, etc.

I believe he has shown good faith enough to what to tackle this problem of sanitation in general head on by getting a full ministry to suprintend over this pressing issue.

In the western world most of them drink soda instead of water because they know their water bodies are contaminated with all sorts of industrial effluent. If our drinking water contains feacal matter then all of us should be sick by now. Many of us drink treated water from the acquifers(boreholes) so what bulcrap is that? As for open dedication, it is due to poverty. Many of us enjoy using nicely fragranced water closet in our mansions but we forgot it is very costly for the poor hence they resort to open defecation. There are many public and community toilets that are well kept but the little the user is asked to contribute to maintaining such facilities by way paying some little coin before using it is unaffordable to the poor. If the community toilets are free no one can be employed to keep it tidy the way many are in the country. Bottom line is poverty should be tackled to confront open defecation. As long as poverty and extreme poverty still exists in Ghana open defecation will never go away. Poor homes can simply not afford to build a toilet. Do you blame them for being poor???
