It's interesting. He entered Legon in 1795, the year Prof Kwapong was vacating his post as VC. I am sure he never dreamed he would be wearing the shoes of Kwapong one day. But someone must wear those shoes and the next man is as good as Ayeetey (alias Blackman of Okponglo) to also wear those shoes.
I am sure he did his best. The University as an institution has changed tremendously since he was a student there. In 1975 there were just some 5000 students in the entire university and one could count first class degree holders each year on his fingers. Today, I understand there are some 40,000 students and thousands of First Class degree awarded each year. That is progress - of a sort.
Some things still remain very Ghanaian, though - like the huge farewell party and dinner held in his honour. Those of us who were his mates in Legon and who have also gone out of the country and experienced university life in the West now see things differently. It's very different culture here and I can't remember any farewell parties and dinners for outgoing chancellors (or rectors). But people have different traditions and it is difficult to say which tradition trumps the other.
Well done, Blackman, and good luck.

Up until the year 2000, anyone who attended a public university in Ghana attended for free. Now the most brilliant students who happen to be poor would be denied access because they can't afford. The SSNIT Student Loan only pays for a tiny fraction of the cost of attendance. Aryeetey attended university for free. Why can't the poor have access?

Do you really understand the meaning of the word 'incompetent'. I am sorry for the womb that gave birth to you.

Ghana is made up of people like you, that is why there is filth every where. Can you enumerate his achievement as a vice chancellor?

But if you go overseas, Research is twinned with DEVELOPMENT.
There has been plenty, plenty, plenty research done through Legon, KNUST, UCC, BRRI, CSIR...need I go on?
And if they don't seem to impact the country in any visible forms...like potholes, rotting plantain, DUMSOR, expensive tilapia etc. etc. etc. why do we still throw money into research when all it does is to send professors and others overseas to CONFERENCE upon CONFERENCE upon CONFERENCE upon CONFERENCE upon CONFERENCE upon CONFERENCE upon CONFERENCE upon CONFERENCE upon ....eebei! We invest hundreds of millions into research, and all we get are shoddy goods from China.
I don't care if Legon comes first in rankings in Africa!
They should show us WHAT they have done now and what they did in the past.
We don't want what they WILL DO in the future 'cos it's all smoke and mirrors.

To be fair, Professor Ernest Aryeetey did generally well and should be congratulated for his six-year tenure. However, there were some clear failures for which the new Vice-Chancellor needs to deal with. A major one is getting Legon both students and staff to be in touch with the larger community in Ghana to help solve numerous problems facing society. Legon still looks too elitist for a Third World country. However, Aryeetey could not be blamed totally for this elitist structure as it has been building up for over 60 years. But he did not do much in this area. So overall grade for him is B+ just short of an A.

You are right on point. Most of these public universities are useless. They produce unprepared graduates for real world work force, and also their research has no use for real problems.
