It's nice you still follow these new acts and can analyse their productions. Some of us, because we are old, just can't listen to many of these new musicians. It doesn't necessarily mean we think talent died with our age - no, creativity and talent are not bound by time and space. But we still cannot listen to acts like Shatta what?
One thing I was hoping to see in this piece is the role of the music critic in Ghana. I don't think they are helping to distinguish talent from trash. Criticism of all kinds has always been the bane of Ghanaian journalism and writing.
Then also is that thing about Shatta Wale's public. I think the guy didn't have much formal education and he appeals to people with little education. I hear his popularity stems basically from that section of the crowd...
Is a word missing in your sentence:
"Wale is simply Wale, himself, and has a long way to go to learn the ropes…though we are necessarily implying that what constitutes “good music” is rigidly absolute."? ... you are not necessarily implying...
A good piece, Kwarteng. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Maybe I have to do a piece on the role of the music critic. It is a terrain I am familiar with and have a lot of information.
I have however touched on bits and pieces of this subject matter in some of my previous articles. That said, I will fully develop the subject matter for readers like you.
Thanks.

Like it or not shatta wale on the contrary is one finest thing to have ever happened in the ghanaian music industry in history. The failure of a person to comprehend the lyrics of another does not meen the lyrics fall short of standards. In most cases, i personally observed that some artist fail to get their deserved attention and acknowledgements primarily because they are ahead of their generation. Such is the case of shatta wale. Bigups man shatta!!! From the shatta family, boom, tuu, tuu tuwei

Listen to the pig, Kwarteng, saying ...Ghanaian pseudo-dancehall artiste Shatta Wale releases a profane song “Womaami Twe” and his wife, Shatta Michy, shamelessly endorses and defends it saying:
“I love the song. I’m not listening to the profanity but I’m listening to the rhythm, beat and chorus because they are all on point. He was trying to do a blend of African beat and the dance hall thing together. So far with all the experiments he has done, this is the best. I’m not looking at the profanity. You don’t have to look at the negative side of it but let’s look at the positive…”

Frank,
If you don't look at both the positive and the negative sides of the song, you are doing yourself, your family, and your country a disservice without realizing it because the words of the songs we hear influence us directly and indirectly. Do Shatta a favour and be a real friend and admirer by being truthful and real. After all, he is out there on the world stage representing us. We love him but like the rest of us, he is human. He makes mistakes. When he does, we must protect him by pointing out such mistakes - that is all! One love, Frank, every time!

Dear Whoever-You-May-Be,
When Shatta looks good, we all look good; when he looks bad, we all look bad because he is one of us. Let us look closely at criticism in good faith, and seek to improve our image of ourselves as best we can; most importantly, let us learn to truly love ourselves and each other with an open mind. That means we must recognize when we are being criticized out of love and not hate. One love, every time! Period!
