Often on a day like this, we all write glowing tributes to our mothers - how great they were, how they toiled for us to be alive and how we would not be here on earth if not for them.
We completely forget that not all mothers are really "mothers" and not everybody will remember their mother with affection. Fortunately, most will remember theirs with affection but there will be a few who will not.
Have you ever been the victim child of a divorced relationship where the fault was your mother's?
Has you mother ever taken on another woman after the failure of her marriage and treated the new man's children far better than you because it is the new man who is now providing money for the meals?
Have you ever felt that your mum shouldn't have given birth to you because she was quite incapable of taking care of you? Have you ever felt that you really wouldn't have wanted to be the child of a mother whose only solace is "God will provide"? You wanted your mother to provide for you - not God!!!
Have you ever been in a situation where you wished you were rather the child of your best friend's mother?
Have you ever wondered in your old age why your mother ever gave birth to you and come to the realisation that she did so just because that was what everyone else did and she didn't want to be laughed at among her fellow womenfolk? Yes, you wouldn't blame your mum for thinking that way but you can't help thinking of the situation.
Or you may have realized that you were purely the result of your mum's lechery. You were never planned and you came into the world as a result of your dad not being able to keep his thing under wraps and your mum's inability to say no!
But, of course, no matter how you think of your mum, you're grateful that he didn't allow you to suffer more than you actually did in your youth, she didn't allow you to die and she didn't abort you. And today, in your own old age, you forget everything and you look after your aged mother far better than she ever did to you when you were growing up. She could hardly pay your school feels but today she enjoys her regular pension from the remittance you make to her EVERY BLESSED MONTH! And what you send her is more than the salaries of many civil servants in Ghana. And when she passes away, you will bury her with all dignity because what burial she gets reflects more upon you the living child than the dead mother.
And so, as we celebrate mother's day in Ghana and say kudos to all the good mothers, we should also remind all mothers to be good mothers at all times. And we should also remind would be mothers to be prepared to be good mothers.
