Whether he does well or not does not only depend on the type of degree he has. It will depend more on the understanding of the issues at stake. Even if his degree is in entrepreneurship, and he has worked in the bank, he can come to understand the issues and approve the right policies. A lot more can depend on the experience and learning he gathers on the job rather than the academic knowledge he brings to it.
And as Mojingle says, there are lots of technocrats in the bank to do much of the work even though one may wonder why those technocrats were rather not made the governor.
I think the only way to know what he's made of is to see what he does after one or two years. It may be a political/tribal appointment but it need not be bad on account of that.
Finally, I wonder why you would say Dr Nashiru but say Bernanke. It just shows our Ghanaian mentality that it is the degree that is the man and not what he really does...

Thank God some are waking up and are beginning to question things. Thanks for an excellent article, but as usual this is not what the Ghanaian wants to read. very soon, there will be a boom.

Kofi, Nash's credentials may not meet your high standards, but like you poignantly observed, Bernake is an economic historian yet he was made the head of the Federal Reserve Board, a job that saw him lead the United States through one of its worst recessions.
So, following your logic, Nash does not necessary need abject lessons in micro-finance to formulate fiscally prudent policies.
What is more, the BoG crawls with technocrats, wise and steady in their ways and they sure will give the governor a helping hand.

So you are saying because Ben Benenke sad himself that he studied the great depression in the 30s his whole life gave him impetus to save the USA from the great recession of how many years (2007-2009) after?
The other point you made hinges on the new governed of bank of Ghana's expertise.
You also noted the all economists agree that the GHS or GHC for Ghana cedi is overvalued. Which is very true and why did that happen and who caused it? Are we going to bring in people who caused the over valuing of the cedi to come back and clean up their mess?
Historically, in the 1930s depression a lot of the problem was hinged on severe conditions in the middle belt of the USA and a country that was attempting massive industrialized agriculture at the time.
S uprising lyrics it lasted just three years and took a crippled president FDR to turn the economy around.
Have you tried to interrogate yourself who the Fed Chair was at the time. Even Americans are silent on who the Fed chair was a credit FDR for the recovery. I am not sure if FDR was an economist. I can Google search that it's easy these days. If let say that depression economy recovered before even Ben Benenke was born until the next recession then it does not really matter because the cause of that recession was not even man-made.
Let's fast forward to 2007-2009 recession it was not even a depression which is even considered worst than a recession. I would like to say depression is multiples of recession.
The recession therefore was a criminal intent of a few bankers, banks were overgrown nations and nation states and became trusts or cartels against all the norms of economic principles to the extent that financial governance became an albatross such criminal dealers became hidden in the shadows. Such that they developed sub-prime loans and mortgage super derivatives by the help of the new digital age that does not require the physical controls but float in some cloud.
So you and me know that Hank Paulson had to run around a lot in his last days as far as to China to talk to his students who are heads there to loan the USA trillions of dollars.
After the USA got all the cash Paulson quit which I agree with because the mess created was under his watch anyways.
To the detriment of China in a way the interest rates were brought to near zero by the cash helicopter drop man Ben Benenke came to save the day. But on whose free cash? Is the question?
That said to say that because some studied a depression and therefore solved the recession so therefore this new Governor should show what he is made up off by just Google searching his research and inferring he will not be up to the task is totally flawed.
Especially, when the Nashiru man was shown in just last week and has not made any policy pronouncements yet. Which he may not make and that is the flaw in our system because the Minister of Finance seem to have more locus than the Governor of the Bank of Ghana unfortunately.
This is the same reason why our markets or stock market won't blink and not because the new governor is not qualified or not a known powerhouse.
By the way is it not the same economists of the USA that head or control the IMF/World Bank except for the recent two French citizens of the sex predator and Madam Lagarde?
I would like to say that you have tried a lot of economic thought in your writeup and I am not sure if the governor is your age/school mate or colleague in a way but it will be fair to him if you allow him to at least start his work. For you are putting your cart far before the wheel.
My suggestion is if you came back in a year and analyse the guys work you would do a better job than this try which sounds too benign to me.
Keep studying hard in American Universities, also try to be original in you effort to seeking to find lasting solutions to the economic woes of our country. God Bless.
