We the younger generation that did not witness Nkrumah administration need to get all the information of what really went on at that time and this article has given us the other side of the coin instead of the usual Nkrumah never dies as if his administration did not have challenges.
It looks like President Nkrumah did well when the country had money but things started going bad after spending all the money.

IF NKRUMAN HAD THE OPPORTUNITY THAT CURRENT AND PAST GOVERMENTS AFTER NKRUMAH THE PRIVILEDGE TO BORROW AS THESE CURRENT AND PAST GOVERNMENTS HAD GHANA WOULD BE JUST LIKE SINGAPORE. ASK THE GOVERMENTS AFTER DR. NKRUMAH PROPERTIES THAT HE LEFT WERE MOST SOLD TO THEMSELVES AND THEIR FRIENDS. THE TEMA HARBOUR, AND ITS DRY DOCKS WERE BUILT BY NKRUMAH. FOLKS, DO NOT LET THESE"GBO MAWO" DETRACTORS FOOL YOU. I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND SAW WITH MY OWN EYES WHAT WENT ON. I WAS NOT IN POLITICS BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT THE GOVERMENT OF DR. NKRUMAH WAS AND WOULD EVER BE THE BEST GHANA WOULD EVER HAVE. ASK THEM TO SHOW YOU THE PROPERTIES DR. NKRUMAH LEFT FOR HIMSELF. THESE LIARS WOULD SAY ALL THEY WANT TO FOOL YOU. ASK ALL THE POLITICIANS AFTER NKRUMAH HOW THEY CAME BY THEIR CURRENT PROPERTIES? THESE POLITICIANS JUST NEED MONEY FROM GOVERNMENT SOURCES THAT IS WHY YOU WILL READ ABOUT PROFESSIONALS INSTEAD OF WORKING IN THEIR FIELDS, CHOOSE TO ENGAGE IN POLITICS IS BECAUSE IT IS THE EASIEST MEANS OF ACQUIRING WEALTH. THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN GHANA'S DEVELOPMENT, THEY ARE INTERESTED IN THEMSEVES. ASK ANYONE IF YOU HAD MONEY AND YOU USE IT IN CONSTRUCTIVE VENTURES, OF COURSE IT WILL NOT BE THE SAME. Sarpong, just listen to yourself! Do you really have a sister, daughter or a wife?
This is what you know best, spewing horrible, lascivious insults on others when they squeeze you to a corner on facts. If you were as brilliant as you would have the Public to believe, you'd have long published your treatise to fully and more convincingly explain Ghana's economic plight to date, and provided unfailing proposition to correct it for good.
All you keep doing is regurgitating the crappy, mendacious buffoonery the CIA concocted to justify overthrowing Nkrumah's regime. The declassified CIA reports affirm how the USA Agency sabotaged Nkrumah's economic and developmental efforts.
So, who are you to deny what the CIA itself alluded to as having orchestrated itself?
This is not a question of one being an Nkrumahist or otherwise. It is about learning and speaking the divine truth regarding what really happened to our Country.
No amount of your deceptive spin and egregiously tainted emotionally-driven biases would change the truth. You are entitled to your own opinion and analysis, however skewed you want it to be. But you cannot have your own facts about the same event that all others have access to evaluate and even experience personally.
You think firing off profanities like 'fuck off', '..son of a two cedis whore', and the like is what would make people believe your sophomoric, and even puerile, lies and elevate your esteem? Those insults make you look dirtier, more and more uncivilized, and crude. Why would you like to like that?
The Works of Nkrumah have been fully analyzed all over the World by much better scholars than you and me and have earned him the Millenial Man of Africa.
You do not have any provable exclusive facts that negate what all these analysts arrived at to so adamantly claim the spurious conclusions you reached.
Surely, so long as you reserve a huge dark chamber in your heart for your eternal hatred for Nkrumah, nothing could ever change your polluted mind on anything he achieved as net value for Ghana.
You would live all life and die miserably with those lies and hatred. Get a life, bro!
50 years plus since the claim of timely intervention to unseat the 'demonic dictator' who encouraged your ilk to take Education more seriously and made it easier for you and all to access basic Education, you still cannot see any good in him. We have been pursuing idiotic blueprints of continued subservience to the imperialist, and what has it gotten for us? Left to your kind, Ghana would still be the resource farm for the West and continue to import every single item we would need to exist at a much lesser and lesser par.
You are one of those Ghanaians who fear to dream big, and would not like to be self-sufficient in anything, stifling innovation, and failing to see integrity and honesty as virtues needed to build a Nation.
If I were not committed to real democracy, I would howl at you to just shut up with your 'Abubunabunu' and 'Adowa-afuru' mentality that you infuse into our National discourse.
Long Live Ghana!!!

With evidence and data, you do not need to hurl invectives, unless you ain't got any.....
As you well know, we do not generally indulge you for precisely the nature of most of your posts.
We thought we would this time...given the special circumstance, and our access to data outside the control of coup plotters and fabricators of Johnson-CIA-supporting myths.
This is an official record from the Johnson Library. It shows that Nkrumah/so-called Governor of Bank of Ghana/Ghana, etc., had not even drawn all the proceeds of the loan facility for Akosombo Dam in 1966. (This balance (3Million pound) was paid to Ankrah in 1967, and idiot Ankrah did not even recognize that part of the funds he got from the British as aid was actually Akosombo Dam loan proceeds Nkrumah's Government had not even collected up to the overthrow of the CPP by the Johnson-CIA, and rascals like Ankrah and Busia.
In that context, your "...You have to be really stupid to believe Ghana had 209 million dollars reserve 1963 when we were looking for loans to build the dam..." is baseless, and then some!
So, Mr. Sarpong, do indulge yourself for the last time.

Subject: Under Secretary’s Trip.
1. Under Secretary, Fredericks and I had 45-minute meeting with Lt. General Ankrah afternoon May 15. Only other person present was E.C. Quist-Therson, DepSec to NLC.
2. Ankrah was in excellent spirits. Extended warm welcome to party and expressed great delight that such high-ranking official had come to Ghana. Said NLC very much appreciated speed with which USG had responded to Ghana’s needs immediately following February 1966 coup. But for this support he stated there would have been confusion and unrest and NLC could have had difficult time to “get going.”
3. Ankrah also expressed gratitude for PL–480 help and for leadership shown by US Delegation at April Paris meeting of donor countries. Said several countries had already responded, and disclosed that UK will extend pounds 4 million ($11.2 million) loan (understand that pounds 3 million is balance of Volta Dam loan which never used). Ankrah remarked this a welcome turnabout for HMG, which up to now had not been too helpful or forthcoming. Cited as example failure UK to release GOG of obligations on frigate...."

I was attending school at Twedaase Middle near Akodjo in Tema by the Catholic Church, at the time of the Nkrumah overthrow.
Nothing changed. It was business as usual.
We had a fully equipped science lab and a top of the class pantry for the ladies to better their lot in the culinary department.
On Thursdays, it was carpentry at Oninku.
Common elementary schools enjoyed such amenities from 1957 – maybe till 1980 before everything died.
What was done differently, after the coup that generated funds to revamp the economy for the upkeep of all the numerous top schools?
We never run out of milk or rice. The factories were still running.
UTC or was it Kingsway at Tema market, had plenty of chicken spare parts to feed nations.
I saw Afro Gbede’s fleet of Toyotas during elections campaigns in 1969.
Dude was a tycoon of the highest caliber after the 66 coup.
All our bank managers and most within Nkrumah’s party were bought to tell lies and to sabotage Kwame.
Look at where it has gotten us to.
Beautiful Ghana is now as dirty as hell.
The coup and all the other coups that followed were all wrong.
Africans are stupid. I am sorry.

1958: Ghana Permits Imprisonment without Trial for Some Suspects
The Ghanaian government, headed by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, legalizes imprisonment without trial for people it considers security risks. (BBC 11/4/1997; Encyclopaedia Britannica 2004)
1964: Nkrumah Declares Himself President of Ghana for Life
Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah becomes increasingly authoritarian, declaring himself president for life and banning opposition parties. (BBC 11/4/1997; Yergin and Stanislaw 1998; Encyclopaedia Britannica 2004)
Introducing Authoritarian Rule and a One-Party State
The CPP’s control was challenged and criticized, and Prime Minister Nkrumah used the Preventive Detention Act (1958), which provided for detention without trial for up to 5 years (later extended to 10 years). On July 1, 1960, a new constitution was adopted, changing Ghana from a parliamentary system with a prime minister to a republican form of government headed by a powerful president. In August 1960, Nkrumah was given authority to scrutinize newspapers and other publications before publication. This political evolution continued into early 1964, when a constitutional referendum changed the country to a one-party state.
Nkrumah’s complete domination of political power had served to isolate lesser leaders, leaving each a real or imagined challenger to the ruler. After opposition parties were crushed, opponents came only from within the CPP hierarchy. Among its members was Tawia Adamafio, an Accra politician. Nkrumah had made him general secretary of the CPP for a brief time. Later, Adamafio was appointed minister of state for presidential affairs, the most important post in the president’s staff at Flagstaff House, which gradually became the center for all decision making and much of the real administrative machinery for both the CPP and the government. The other leader with an apparently autonomous base was John Tettegah, leader of the Trade Union Congress. Neither, however, proved to have any power other than that granted to them by the president.
By 1961, however, the young and more radical members of the CPP leadership, led by Adamafio, had gained ascendancy over the original CPP leaders like Gbedemah. After a bomb attempt on Nkrumah’s life in August 1962, Adamafio, Ako Adjei (then minister of foreign affairs), and Cofie Crabbe (all members of the CPP) were jailed under the Preventive Detention Act. The CPP newspapers charged them with complicity in the assassination attempt, offering as evidence only the fact that they had all chosen to ride in cars far behind the president’s when the bomb was thrown.
For more than a year, the trial of the alleged plotters of the 1962 assassination attempt occupied center stage. The accused were brought to trial before the three-judge court for state security, headed by the chief justice, Sir Arku Korsah. When the court acquitted the accused, Nkrumah used his constitutional prerogative to dismiss Korsah. Nkrumah then obtained a vote from the parliament that allowed retrial of Adamafio and his associates. A new court, with a jury chosen by Nkrumah, found all the accused guilty and sentenced them to death. These sentences, however, were commuted to twenty years’ imprisonment.
In early 1964, in order to prevent future challenges from the judiciary, Nkrumah obtained a constitutional amendment allowing him to dismiss any judge. At the same time, Ghana officially became a single-party state, and an act of parliament ensured that there would be only one candidate for president. Other parties having already been outlawed, no non-CPP candidates came forward to challenge the party slate in the general elections announced for June 1965. Nkrumah had been re-elected president of the country for less than a year when members of the National Liberation Council (NLC) overthrew the CPP government in a military coup on February 24, 1966. At the time, Nkrumah was in China. He took up asylum in Guinea, where he remained until he died in 1972.

Nkrumah wasn't xenophobic and murderous as Hitler was. Nkrumah did not gas anyone for sheer political or Social advantage. Nkrumah did not set out to overtake any other Country to expand his territory or Political power.
All that led to his dictatorial measures were driven by the Opposition's relentless efforts to not only overthrow his Government but also assassinate him. He was left with little choice to protect his legitimate political mandate and his life.
We must acknowledge that hindsight is always 20/20, and in the heat of the struggle to stay alive and continue his program for the Nation, Nkrumah might have missed any other viable option to do otherwise in a more democratic way.
Besides, for most of his dictatorial era, Ghana was under Emergency conditions at the time when the violence by the Opposition was growing day and day. The fact that Nkrumah did not ask the Parliament for those sweeping dictatorial Powers right at the beginning of his assumption to Power must offer some glimpse into his most likely intentions that he would not have championed the One-Party State, for example.
So, we have to be very objective, in spite of any personal animosities we might have against the late President. If Nkrumah fits a Fuhrer of the Nazi Hitler's kind, how would Sarpong describe the likes of Idi Amin? Emotions can surely make us ran amok with irrationality!
Then, how would Sarpong call the Houphouet Boignys and Lee Kuan Yews? Oh, he may not call them Fuhrers but maybe 'Malevolent Despots', huh? Some oxymoron terminology of sorts... just because those dictators served the West's interests best. Right?
Folks, we need to do better to get away from such dangerous flaky thinkers like Sarpong, or Ghana would perpetually be a beggar Nation, always looking up to the West for salvation, or even mere permission to exist.
Long Live Ghana!!!

Very good piece, Justice.
Several cocoa farmers committed suicide because they were given worthless "chits", as payment for the sale of their cocoa beans. Many of them accidentally destroyed their chits and became penniless. To watch their families suffer, some decided to end it all.
There were at least two cases where the affected farmers shot dead the thieving "buying agents", after trekking to the buying centres numerous times without getting anything from the agents.
The fact that workers were not paid for months on end, attested to that. That is what the socialist Mahama is doing to Ghanaian teachers and nurses today!

So, quit showing pettiness and tell us the real, solid point you think you have made to convince anyone with your crappy cut-and-paste Article. Look, Sarpong, you are trying too hard to be counted as some intellectual. But the opacity of your Articles and derivation of illogical conclusions to them exposes you as falling way far behind.
The implication of your 'Asantevi' name-calling is well understood. And it does not surprise many of us who have long known you to be an abject bigot and xenophobe. What if Asante were an Ewe? He is challenging you on the wisdom and verity of your factual build-up to support your arguments. And all you do is attacking his ethnic background amidst wild assumptions?
You may well be some "Akurase royalty" who has bought into the morass of gullible deception that Nkrumah wanted to eradicate Traditional Authority in Ghana, and thereby fearing that your privileges of sitting on family Cocoa Plantation Estates for your exclusive benefit were going to be taken away.
Any curtailment of Traditional Authorities' incursions into secular Politics was necessary because the Opposition had chosen to coopt the Chiefs with that fear-mongering to engender their dislike of Nkrumah. And the Opposition hoped that the masses would fall in line to reject Nkrumah when they realize their Chiefs did not approve of him. But that tactic failed, and failed miserably, allowing Nkrumah to enjoy a massive victory with the support of the majority of Ghanaians.
Naturally, all our Chiefs had a fundamental repulsion for any Central Government, beginning from the Colonial Days, as they saw the Powers of Secular Government to be a direct obstacle to their absolute control of their subjects. All the three Opposition leaders we now so fondly dub NPP with as the triumvirate model for the Party, Danquah-Busia-Dombo, were Royalties who wanted the opportunity to regain more power from the Central Government to the Chiefs.
The People saw through that and thereby rejected them. Period! If the Traditional Authorities had anything more to offer the People to advance our lives, we would have long seen that in the Society, so many years after 'freeing' their System from any grips that Nkrumah might have held them in.
But, good Heavens! Haven't we seen the deterioration in the performance of the Traditional Authorities in our
communities already? Many of them have squandered the wealth that their predecessors left for them to help oversee the affairs of the People. Others still keep poaching into the State subventions to their areas at the expense of the People. They have sold the Lands to not even the highest bidder but to anyone who would help them hide the loot. They have sold the Gold and other ornaments that the various stools were guarded by financially without accounting to the People.
So, here lay exposed your lies about Nkrumah suppressing Traditional Authorities. Even if he did, then, why haven't they redeemed themselves in 50 years plus?
Long Live Ghana!!!

Justice,
I am not sure where people like Prof Lungu get their figures from, but here is what the IMF's annual report for 1965, says of Ghana on pages 92 and 93,
"The balance of payments deficit that has persisted in Ghana since 1959 reflects an excess of domestic demand originating largely in the public sector. A part of this excess demand has been deliberate, representing a preparedness to draw down reserves for purposes of economic development; but another part has resulted from the fact that the Government's budgeted expenditures were predicated on expectations regarding cocoa export proceeds which did not materialize because of the fall in cocoa prices; the world price of cocoa fell from an average of £336 a ton in 1958 to £179 a ton in 1964 to £122 a ton in 1965)
Until 1962 the excess demand spilled over in higher imports ($385 million in 1961). From 1962 through 1964 imports were restricted to a level only slightly in excess of $300 million. The continuing current account deficits as well as, in certain years, a sizable capital outflow (e.g., to Guinea, Mali, and Upper Volta), were financed by borrowing abroad (mainly suppliers' credits), by drawing down reserves, and—in 1964—by borrowing against securities held in the reserves.
The outcome has been that Ghana's international reserves declined from some $530 million in 1957 to a total (net of securities pledged against short-term loans) of less than $70 million in the spring of 1965. In addition, Ghana has incurred a considerable foreign debt; suppliers' credits denominated in foreign currency arranged from 1959 to April 1965 totalled some

Owing to a more rapid rise in expenditures (both recurrent and capital ) than in revenue, the over-all deficits on the Government’s budget rose to £G 50m in 1962/63; it was reduced to £ G 64m in 1963/64, but it is estimated at £G 66m in 1964/65. The deficits have been financed by drawing down on the overseas holdings of Government and by issuing treasury bills."
Some of us lived through it. There were shortages of everything you could think of. If Ghana had that much money in reserves in 1965, why did the NLC have to go begging the West to be able to pay workers' salaries and other state subventions?

"...The outcome has been that Ghana's international reserves declined from some $530 million in 1957 to a total (net of securities pledged against short-term loans) of less than $70 million in the spring of 1965..."
SARPONG'S:
"...the external reserve position had deteriorated considerably between 1957 when net reserves stood at US$269 million and 1966 when they were negative at –US$391 million..."
ITEM: Maybe you both need to confer with each other and reconcile, before you come back again!
It is elementary!
Obviously, everyone will agree that you do not spend/incubate your capital on capital/public projects and still have your capital in the "reserve bank".
You've lived long enough to remember Nkrumah's overthrow?
Maybe you want to start counting the Nkrumah benefits, to include "UNITARY GHANA"!
So, thanks, but no thanks!
We will stick with our numbers!
Nothing that we have said is contradicted by any of your postings! Reconcile with each other first, and come again.
ITEM: What exactly do you understand by: "...(net of securities pledged against short-term loans)...in the spring of 1965...", your own post?
WORLD BANK DATA FROM INDEX MUNDI
GHANA RESERVES 1960-1972
1960 $277,926,000

You are now turning to hearsay, personal recollections, and assumptions about us you have no clue about.
And this re-channeling of Kweku Baako!
Nice try!
HEAR THIS: We are big enough, old enough, data-sourced enough, etc., to defend our own findings and conclusions.
So, again, try reconciling your own data with Sarpong's, then come back and explain, analytically.
World Bank (1965):
"...The balance of payments deficit that has persisted in Ghana since 1959 reflects an excess of
domestic demand originating largely in the public sector. A part of this excess demand has been deliberate, representing a preparedness to draw
down reserves for purposes of economic development; but another part has resulted from the fact
that the Government's budgeted expenditures were predicated on expectations regarding cocoa
export proceeds which did not materialize because of the fall in cocoa prices; the world price of
cocoa fell from an average of £336 a ton in 1958 to £179 a ton in 1964 and to £122 in April 1965. On the other hand, output of cocoa in Ghana has increased substantially in recent
years—from 264,000 long tons in 1956/57 to a plateau of 400,000-450,000 tons in the early
1960's and to some 550,000-600,000 tons today. In fact, Ghana's receipts from cocoa exports have remained relatively stable in recent years. The price paid to the cocoa farmers has not been reduced commensurately
with the fall in world prices, and the income of the cocoa farmers has increased with the rise in output, expanding domestic demand.
So....
Replace "because of the fall" with "CONSPIRACY"!
And when you read "In fact, Ghana's receipts from cocoa exports have remained relatively stable in recent years," it should tell you that despite the conspiracy with the price of cocoa, Nkrumah's government, working with cocoa farmers and others, was able export a lot more cocoa to compensate in part the harm(s) of the conspiracy.
Now, those are all FACTS. But, you must have some "analytics" in addition to "wider perspective" in you, to draw the valid conclusions!

I would like to know from Nkrumah's supporters what the man did wrong? It seems he never erred and that would never sit well with some of us. He did something wrong which led to his ouster.
I would like someone to tell how the man could unite the second largest continent on the planet at a time the world powers were all over it.
During his time in office, he never saw eye to eye with the opposition in Ghana and why did he think of uniting Africa with the idea that all would kowtow to his whim and caprices?
Nkrumah was fooling himself at that time because he was fighting a losing battle. If he was around, trust me, he would bow to the dictates of the world powers no matter how smart he was. Being smart means, develop your nation to the envy of all and when it comes to a point that someone is needed to lead Africa, no one would hesitate to make a frantic call to you because you have shown that qualities in your own backyard.

When half-baked, egoistic scholars like this Sarpong begin to bleat CIA-scripted mantra to justify their devious plots that disrupted Governments all over the World, it makes one wonder if they still believe we are still living in the pre-Internet days.
Gone are the days when a few privileged Scholars claimed to have exclusive access to information they shoved down our throats as undeniable facts to explain our Economic and Political woes. Now, most people have access to the truth in most of the stories these saboteurs and parochial-minded loud-mouth liars were telling us.
So, I encourage all to pursue their own research to expose these liars. Thanks to the Internet.
My only humble lead I'd like to suggest for all pursuing such research on Ghana's Economic trajectory since Independence would be to consider the following facts more deeply when doing so:
1). The status of Ghana's Infrastructure by the time of our Independence.
2). The level of Industrialization that the British left us with.
3). The range of Wealth of native individuals in Ghana up to the advent of Nkrumah.
4). The availability and access to Banks and Financial facilities for Entrepreneurship in Ghana at the time of our Independence.
5). The nature of Economic mobility between Ghana and various external Economic and Financial Institutions that impacted on our developmental progress.
Long Live Ghana!!!
