Mike,
You're seriously wrong in this statement, as the historical facts rather bespoke the opposite.
"Dr. Busia and his Progress Party entered office after winning the general elections (even though not in the Volta Region), not on the basis of ethnicity, even though later developments and pronouncements by high-ranking members of that government would portray them as anti-Ewe (Victor Owusu is dead and gone but his negative utterances about Ewes are still remembered and used as a political we3apon to damage the NPP. So also is Akufo-Addo’s “Yen Akanfuo” nonsense)."
As a matter of fact, the PP's election tactic, based mainly on Ewe deomnisation, introduced the ethnic schism which was echoed by Nana Akufo Addo. I have covered this subject very well and shall post a cut from one of my write-ups here for sundry to read. References provided.
"Then comes the post Feb 24 1966 coup era, when Busia and his PP turned this traditional vilification of Ewes into a political tool to win the 1969 general elections. It was preceded by an internal struggle within the NLC to share the spoils of office after the coup. An extended quote from Dennis Austin, that great chronicler of Ghana history, captures the gist of it, so here we go:
“A surprising and disagreeable novelty of the election was the extraordinary anti-Ewe sentiment that was expressed in conversation with many of those who were against Gbedemah and his party. One can explain this strong animus not simply by a dislike of Gbedema’s reappearance in political life but in relations to events after the 1966 coup. Suddenly there were the soldiers and the police, and everyone burst out singing, but when the music died down away it was noticed that the NLC (it seemed) was commanded by minorities: Ewe and Ga. When Ankrah (a Ga), was moved out, and charges were brought over-hastily by Harlley against the Chief of Defence Staff, Michael Otu, the evidence to many was overwhelming. It was all an Ewe plot. Soon Ghana would be run for the benefit of an energetic minority, operating first within the armed forces, and now behind Gbedemah. ‘Appoint an Ewe to a public corporation or to a government department and within a year the entire hierarchy down to the messenger will be an Ewe.’ So the argument ran. And there was always some evidence for it, since the Ewe, deprived of any natural wealth in their own barren region, have been energetic in seizing the opportunities of public employment, including positions in the army and the police, which wealthier communities (like the Akan) did not wish to occupy. In practice, looking through the list of senior officers in government department and the public corporations, the evidence is certainly not clear of any Ewe domination: it could hardly be in view of their number. But a belief does not, of course, have to be true before people hold it fervently.
Now there is an Akan-dominated government of an Akan dominated society. Were I to become, by some improbable chance of fate, leader of the governing party I would be much less apprehensive of my Ewe opponents in front than of the large and expectant following behind. I would be fearful too of the ambitions of those now excluded from power, remembering the Songs of Innocence that:
The strongest poison ever known
Came from Caeser’s laurel crown” (D. Austin 1976:125)
Austin was writing with hindsight about what befell Busia’s regime, overthrown in a coup led by an Asante.
In Part 2, I intend to examine the hate campaign against the Ewes and the consequences or reactions from the 1970s which led to Kofi Awoonor’s infamous prison book, The Ghana Revolution, which he claimed he wrote in prison when gaoled for helping Brig. Kattah to escape from Ghana. It’d be necessary to focus on the Ghana Army, from its origins and recruitment trends since it is at the crux of the matter.

C.Y. ANDY-K, thanks for the broad context that you have provided. But can one say that the Busia administration was overthrown because of its incompetence and that it set the stage for no Akan to be elected as Ghana's leader just because Busia failed to deliver?
My angle was narrow enough on that score, not really seeking to examine the broader context of ethnic or tribal politics as practised. Do you see the difference?

If Mahama hadn't stolen the nomination from his own party, I don't think NDC would have nominated freely and endorsed someone accused of inflating the price of airplanes by millions of dollars corruptly as their presidential candidate. After the undemocratic nomination and fictitious endorsement, he then slept in bed with the EC and Atugbah to steal the verdict of Ghanaians and become the president of Ghana fraudulently.
Mahama is not only leading the most corrupt government in the history of Ghana, he himself is corrupt and rotten to the core. Ghanaians will surly get rid of him in 2016 even if he is still in bed with the EC because; they are fed up with his corrupt and inefficient government. Moreover, he is soiling the good name of northerners.

Busia was fit to be a leader for any country in this world. That's not mine; that was what the world said about him when he died prematurely.
The man was a respectable, God fearing leader that had a complete program for all aspects of our national development. Unfortunately, the Young Pioneers implanted by Nkrumah in our midst did not allow Ghanaians to benefit from his knowledge, and the good work he had started to do for sustainable development of our country. They then hijacked the country and impeded our development until 2001.
Although Acheampong was the leader of the neo-communist, Nkrumahist group that carried out the dirty work of overthrowing Prof. Busia unjustifiably, and was supported by Nkrumahists who became pillars of the so-called NRC regime, they later disowned him in order to hide their involvement in the destruction of the country again. And He was finally killed by another quack communist that also seized power and unleashed a Cuban-style communist dictatorship on Ghanaians.

Dr. Michael J.K. Bokor cunningly avoided mentioning that Ewes have been the most tribalistic votes in the history of Ghana. I believe their leaders have deceived them for long and there are signs that they would vote against tribalism and NDC in the 2016 general election because the common people have seen the light.
Ewes condemned the overthrow of Ghana's first communist dictator, and yet they kick against the removal of Kotoka's name from the airport. But if it were the name of Ankara or Afrifa, charlatans like Michael Bokor would have been writing tones of tribalistic articles to support removal of the name from the airport in our nation's capital. Again, when Yeboah killed Kotoka in the failed coup, Ewes immediately pointed an accusing finger at Afrifa believing that he masterminded the killing in order to take the top job from Kotoka who was Ewe.
As a result of that, the Progress Party won overwhelmingly in all the regions of Ghana in 1969 except the Volta region. They later tried to justify their behavior by saying that Victor Owusu accused them of being inward looking. For them, that statement justified everything including the overthrow of the newly elected government. Even though the region benefited tremendously from the Busia government, they still went ahead and overthrew it unjustifiably.
It will be surprising to know that the coup planning started immediately after the government was sworn into office, and that had nothing to do with what it did or did not do in office. Ewes planned it and lured Acheampong into it by offering him the leadership position. Busia's government made Acheampong the Army Commander and he was now being asked to betray the trust, so the reward must be big enough. The coup plotters also realized that he was the only obstacle in their way and they willingly made him the leader in order to reach their ultimate goal. This scenario was repeated in the coup that overthrew Dr. Liman when Rawlings deceived Akatapore and others to betray the President paving the way for the coup to take place.
Those who planned and executed the 1972 coup were all Ewes, and they are Major Baah, Major Solomey, Major Agbo and the rest of the Ewe Majors that constituted the so-called National Redemption Council. Also, when Rawlings used the tribal card to occupy Ghana in the 80s and 90's, the country was virtually a Kingdom of Ewes, and it will be naive and even dishonest for a so-called intellectual like Michael Bokor to believe and say that Rawlings ever won elections freely, fairly and democratically in Ghana. In fact, he stole the verdicts of Ghanaians to remain in power fraudulently.

We have on several occasions stressed and elaborated the evil Islamic pepeni criminal mafia and the callousness of the hegemony ayigbe ndc. What the ayigbe and pepeni have in common are their intrinsic evil , wickedness devoid of humanity and hatred of the christian dominated Akan majority. Winston Churchill in 1899 then a journalist noted the most retrogressive ideology/religion know to humanity is Islam and now we see the day is coming when the whole world will have to ban that fake religion and go to war to wipe them out from the face of this earth. Islamisation has intensified over the last 3 decades with mosques now in every village or hamlet , we even have a a copy of haya Sofia the blue mosque in the center of Accra. We shall know the tree by its fruits and the fruits of islam are hate ,deceit, lies, murder , destruction, mistrust , hypocrisy and retrogression never fellowship or the the spread of goodwill to your fellow man. Mankind will sooner or later begin a proper war against Islam instead of this botched up miserable attempt to show off their new weapons and toys we see today. Look at our pepeni/ayigbe infested govt and know they can never develop or do anything right as their hearts are black and consumed with hate. Common sense and practical solutions can never be implemented . Chairman Mao Zedong said it doesnt matter if the cat is white or black as long as it catches mice . Our non effective govt can never learn from the experiences and lessons of those nations that have succeeded . The essence of development is the ability to mobilize and unify the majority of the positive elements in our society toward the progressive targets of acquiring technology for the industrialization , increase productivity , secure or create new markets . This is basically what the Japanese , Germans , Koreans , Chinese have done but our govt is focused more on deny the Akans freedom , discrimination and undermining every initiative or effort of the Akans . Fifi Kwetey was one minister in charge of economic planning and development but not once did he open his mouth to outline a strategy or encourage investments in key sectors rather all we heard was propaganda bullshit. . It rotten and stinks to high heaven that true Akan statesmen and intellectuals of proven achievement such as Kofi Annan or Sam Jonah have distanced themselves . Any Akan who has made the naive mistake of joining has been hounded like a dog like Mills , or been setup to take a fall or ended up being falsely accused. Yes there is no party politics rather tribalism and an ongoing undeclared war against Christians , Akans and any who dare think with a free mind. Only a fool believes that a regime born in the blood of the innocent will end with the ballot box , it can only end in war. Our election is going to be rigged with the help of the treacherous traitor Nzema EC and the violence that follows will be used as another opportunity to kill more Akan intellectuals or potential leaders .The revenue of the govt is over 80% used to pay wages that are on the level of pocket money for a teenager anywhere else in the world but still they refuse to do what is necessary to raise the standard of our people because they believe the people weakened by poverty also loose the will to fight back against oppression and injustice , a collective Stockholm syndrome where the victims become willing perpetrators of crimes together with their captors . A miserable state of affairs indeed . As usual these pepeni /ayigbe criminals and their satelite allies such as the some Gas , Adas etc will try to insult me instead of challenging the truths , lately i laugh since they have progressed from calling me a madman , vulgarities against my ancestors or parents to openly calling me NDC . Today in Ghana the biggest insult is to call someone NDC not so long ago we had to whisper we were Akan today is booming from the highest levels and we are proud. A word to the NDC beware of the wrath and fury of a patient man as we Akans are patient until the time is right

Dr. Michael J.K. Bokor from my own eye witness account the Progress Party was founded on Akan tribal extremist ideology. That was the time the Nigerian song Joromi came out and rally of PP were tuned to Ewe bashing, some of those nightmarish songs, which still sound in my ears, sung by even our brothers and sisters from some West African countries who became victims of Busia's alliance compliance order.
I remember those days well because I have just completed Middle School and was living in Accra New Town where most of our Nigerian brothers and sister reside those days.
The first ethnic cleansing against Ewhes by Busia was the dismissal of 516 senior Ewhe civil servants from the civil service. It was from that time that some Akans started telling Ewhes to go back to Togo as they continue to say today, forgetting that there were Ewhes in the Gold Coast before the exodus brought others to join them.
That was followed by the expelling of Komla Agbeli Gbedema from parliament and leadership of the opposition in parliament.
I just want to be brief.

I think Bokor was in diapers by then. Only that our parents didn't know the use of diapers at that time...
But PP didn't really start as an Akan tribal extremist ideology party. They didn't consciously make any policy like that. It came gradually during the electioneering campaign and assumed its full ascendancy during their 27 month rule. Even though NAL was dominant in the VR, Busia could still campaign freely there and drew large crowds even in places like Ho and Kpandu. These places, including Hohoe, were not anti-Akan at all at that time. Remember they were in alliance with the matemeho people against Nkrumah during the UP days. They voted for Danquah in the last presidential elections he stood in.
It was later on that Busia and his cohorts revealed their anti non-Akan bias so totally and shamelessly. That was also one of the reasons why they were overthrown.
You can blame Acheampong for many things but he was not a tribalist like the PP people.
Many of those Akans saying Ewes (Ewhes) should go back to Togo do not really know the history of our country. The Ewes in the VR did not come from Togo any more than the Gas or Twis came from somewhere. And the southern Ewes (Anlos and co) were part of the Gold Coast long before some of those Akans now saying Ewes are from Togo became part of the Gold Coast.

Of all the substantive issues Martin Amidu has raised in defense of Ghana's Constitution, you could not comment on anyone of them but his passing remarks on the corrupt John Mahama. Whew!!! Amidu is raising alarm bells at the spurious activities of Anas' illegal Tiger Eye PI in collaboration with the government of the day that stretches beyond the boundaries of legality, and instead of illuminating the public with the ramification of Amidu's postulations, you are rather engaged in the inconsequential elements of his pronouncements.
Amidu contends 1) Tiger Eye PI is an illegal entity according to the Companies Act. In the eyes of the law, Anas' Tiger Eye PI does not exist and therefore the company's undercover activities are illegal. The Companies Act requires all companies operating within the boarders of the country to be incorporated or registered before they commence business activities in the country. 2) Tiger Eye PI is a paid agent of the ruling NDC government and Anas is doing the government's dirty bidding. 3) The NDC government has issued Anas a service passport and is in collaboration with the illegal activities of Anas' Tiger Eye PI.
Are you not perturbed by the flagrant violation of our laws by the NDC government and Anas' Tiger Eye PI as elucidated by Martin Amidu? Where does our Constitution allow government of the day to hire an illegal company to engage in espionage activities against a perceived enemy - the Judiciary? Richard Nixon tried that in the 70s (Watergate) and was impeached, disgraced, and removed from office. Is it not the duty of every Ghanaian intellectual to stand with Martin Amidu to defend the Constitution? Why are all these pseudo intellectuals putting their vaunted weight behind the corrupt NDC government and the criminal Anas?

Amidu has raised several issues of late. Some of them are bagatelles not worth spending time on. One of such is his "we northerners" statement which many of us can just dismiss with a flick of the hand. To spend so much time to write such a lengthy article on this trifle seems a waste of time. In the process, Bokor manages to state some very factual errors like the one pointed out by Andy-K. When people write about the political history of our country, they should be aware of the fact that there are still many living witnesses to that history. They cannot get the facts wrong. Their interpretations can be their own, but not the facts...
I thought the piece was about the confrontation between Amidu and Anas - a much more important thing to discuss than Amidu's statements about northerners.
