You are right. That's how Ngoloma became Nkrumah, thanks to the Fante teacher ho was unfamiliar with the Nzema name.
Anyway, Nzemas are not Akan ethnically but because of the centuries of association and mixing with Akans, thereby acquiring a lot of common words and cultural traits, they have been grouped among the Akan ethnic group since 1974 by the Bonduku Conference. That should explain why Ngoloma does not have an Akan/Twi etymology.

Why can't we just concentrate on the political deeds and misdeeds of our past leaders so that we can learn from these?
All this talk about their parentage, sexual exploits, family circumstances, etc. are not necessary for us today. These people, just like us today, didn't choose the parents by whom they were born. How can we make this an issue?
What should be important to us today should be what they did, or failed to do, in their roles as political leaders. Some of the best political leaders have had hopeless family situations, some leaders from the best families did not necessarily become the best leaders. Many combinations are possible.
These guys were born more than a 100 years ago when little was put on record. It will be difficult for us today to establish the exact circumstances of their births. But there is no need for us to do so much less struggle over it.

You don't expect folks to sit idle by while you blatantly distort the truth for your own parochial interest.
I remember, as a kid, just before the gallant men liberated the nation[and as a matter of fact helped to preserve the dignity of Nkrumah before he would have become an ossified Mugabe] one of my big sisters, who was old enough to be a Young Pioneer, used to get Lil Lexus all mesmerized about all the myths surrounding the Osagyefo with the 'tolis' that she actually believed herself. One of the stories was how the JIHADIST Abdel Nasser was incessantly begging His Osagyefoness to take his[Nasser's]COPTIC CHRISTIAN niece, Fathia, as his bride. SUCH A LOAD OF CRAP!!
We all appreciate, respect and take immense pride in Nkrumah's unparalled contributions to the nation and the continent as a whole, despite his well-known flaws as a human. We are just imploring the Zombies to cut the MYTH and be for real. The Purple Heart E.K. Kotoka unravelled the MYTH long, long, long ago.

The problem with Nkrumah haters starts with a lack of reality check. Because of Nkrumah's intelligence, foresight and forethought his ardent fans chose to believe in a mistique; he never told anyone of a Supreme or supernatural powers
Should all you tribal zealots and Nkrumah haters not love the Ghana of today and leave the bad days of Nkrumah behind? But I see you cannot because we live in a shitty Ghana created for us all care of the democracy crowd who have not seen a hand out from colonial masters they would think twice and hard before accepting. Remember it was free Christian Bible lessons that sent our forefathers into slavery for hundreds of years in the wonderlands around the globe or the need to trade for spices and mineral resources that ended up with trading African fools with the kind of thinking common with all Nkrumah haters.

It is amazing how people who are actually ethnocentric knaves and idiots seem to think that falsely accusing others of tribalism gives them license to engage in ethnic name calling and other putrid emanations of ethnic prejudice. It appears the tribalist minority of Ghanaians are heavily dominated by Akans. This has always been so since Abuafreh Busia disgraced Akan and Ghanaian custom by introducing the tribal virus into our national discourse. Most tribalist and other bigots in general suffer from a severe inferiority complex, with a tendency to project their worst attributes on the "other" to justify their ethnocentric prejudice, hostility and hatred. This is displayed every day on Ghanaweb!! In the African context almost all tribalists are also Africa/Black inferiority complex, that pervese mental defect of a black person subscribing to the white male supremacist worldview. The classic Ghanaian example being Abuafreh Busia!!!

Again, ngolomah in Nzima is the same name called Nkrumah in other Akan languages.
In Nzima the seventh born is asuah, nyameke is the eighth, nwia, nyonra or ngolomah is ninth, while eduku is tenth.
However it is possible for one to be named after another named eduku, asuah or ngolomah though that person is not a tenth, seventh or ninth born respectively. So it's obvious that your Nkrumah hatred prevents you from doing what is honourable and reasonable, even the least about checking your facts. Shame

Mr. Sarpong, it's very unfortunate that you've described Mr. Francis Kwarteng as "this mentally challenged individual" and a "quasi-intellectual". I don't know Mr. Kwarteng personally, but I can say with certainty that any intelligent and well-educated person who has been reading on Ghanaweb.com his articles in general and not only those about our first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whether the person agrees with his views or not, can only conclude that he's a well-informed intellectual. There's no way whatsoever one can compare Mr. Kwarteng's intellect with yours, as evidenced by both your writings.
Just consider the kind of English you write, with the numerous elementary grammatical errors, even in your current article. You don't even know how to properly quote someone else, unlike Mr. Kwarteng who writes impeccable and advanced English. In fact, Mr. Kwarteng can be said to have total command of the English language. Therefore for you to refer to him as a "quasi-intellectual" who is "ranting" is very unfair and insulting on your part. You're no Francis Kwarteng when it comes to the question of the intellect.

Frequently, we need a certain amount of sophistication and reflection dealing with these matters!
Much of the substance of this essay is of no interest to us to the extent there is little public policy implication(s). In deed, in our first comment on the Francis Kwarteng's essay, we took pains to focus on "culture" and its influence on "conservative" thought, saying in part, "...That is the type of conumdrum societies and "conservatives" in particular must wrestle. What customs and traditions must be banished because they are, plainly, regressive, discriminatory, and antithetical to human progress..."
However, at the same time, we recognize that one of the "beauties" of being on this portal and similar sites, is the type of information and situational awareness one acquires just reading what other people "know", under comments. The comment from GORGORDUTOR yesterday, regarding events a day or two that February, in 1966, when Nkrumah's CPP government was overthrown, is a classic example. There was radio silence after GORGORDUTOR's.
We imagine in the current situation, not only does Sarpong not have "Nzema" friends could have vetted many of his points on Ghanaian culture in his fantasy report, he did not even bother to spend a second Googling about many of the key items in his essay. So now, we imagine Sarpong will give us another "Radio Silence". Or, maybe better yet, he will come back with "the man needs to have a DNA test to prove paternity".
(Which would be ridiculous and a mighty waste of even his own time!

WE SAY: You must be an authority on those 2 items, even under your caveat. In other areas and here, you speak as if the Gold Coast was the leader in global information, with complete/full records, all accounted, all dotted Is, all crossed Ts.
READ THIS IN THAT SPIRIT:
"...Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was born at Nkroful in the Nzema East, now Ellembele District of the Western Region on September 21, 1909. His father was Opanyin Kofi Nwiana Ngolomah, a goldsmith by profession.
Opanyin Ngolomah hailed from Nkroful but stayed at Tarkwa-Nsuaem in the Wassa Fiase Traditional area where he practiced his goldsmith business, Awulae Agyeifi Kwame II, Omanhene of the Nsein Traditional area, told the Times newspaper. He said while at Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Opanyin Ngolomah married a woman by name Nyaniba, a fishmonger and a petty trader.
Madam Nyaniba hailed from the Agona family of Nsuem, and Dadieso, both in the Western Region and Wenchi in the Brong Ahafo Region. A few years after their marriage, Opanyin Ngolomah returned to his hometown, Nkroful with his wife. Whilst at Nkroful, Opanyin Ngolomah and Madam Nyaniba were blessed with a baby boy on September 21, 1909, whom they named Francis Kwame Ngolomah. The couple lived at Nkroful for some time until young Kwame Ngolomah attained school going age.
In pursuit of his goldsmith business, Opanyin Kofi Ngolomah and his wife according to Awulae Agyeifi Kwame, left Nkroful together with their son Kwame and stayed at Half Assini. “Young Kwame Ngolomah was enrolled at the Half Assini Roman Catholic Primary School, where his name was believed to have been changed from Ngolomah to Nkrumah by his teachers. Young Nkrumah continued his primary school education at Axim Catholic School. On completion of his elementary school education, Nkrumah entered Achimota College in Accra and after completion, Nkrumah taught briefly at the Achimota College, before leaving the Gold coast for further studies in the United States of America, with the financial support of Nana Ackah Watson, a businessman at Tarkwa and some members of his mother’s family at Nsuaem.
Dr. Nkrumah was brought back from America after graduation by Dr. Ako-Adjei to assist in the country’s independence struggle already started by the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) which made him the General Secretary.
Following some misunderstanding between him and some leading members of the UGCC, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah broke away to form his own party, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) which agitated for independence from Britain under the slogan “Self-Government now,” as opposed to the UGCC’s "Self-government in the shortest possible time.”
Independence was granted in 1957, under the leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the name Gold Coast was changed to Ghana. Barely three years after independence, Ghana attained a Republic State on July 1, 1960 and Dr. Nkrumah became the first President of the first Republic.
Whilst he was the President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s family members at Tarkwa-Nsuaem enstooled him the Tufuhene of Nsuaem in appreciation of his hard-work in attaining independence for Ghana."
WE SAY: We imagine there are millions of people who did not know one or the other, or both, of their real birth parents, but went on and succeeded in life a lot more than you and I have, to date.

Call him whatever you like, his state of birth wasn't his fault. So also was the birth of Danquah not his fault, whether or not his mother was married to his middle-age father at 16. Yet, either of these men lived and achieved what most of us cannot claim to have achieved, or will ever achieve in our lifetime.
So, why are you trying to so hard to diminish Nkrumah's image by calling him a bastard? I would ask the same of anyone who uses the reported underage of Danquah's mother for her marriage to his father as some negative attribute of the late Statesman's.
I only saw Kwarteng's submission as an attempt to make the point that marriage of older men to females much younger was not an aberration that only Nkrumah could be faulted for but a Traditional trend that dated back even to the days of Danquah's parents. He might have cited Danquah's family in particular to silence those obsessed with elevating Danquah over Nkrumah and using that fact about Nkrumah's marriage to denigrate him.
The fact that similar marriage situations have been cited with Danquah's father, and Nkrumah's to Fathia, must inform us that there was some existing environment that made such marriages acceptable to people living in those times. Such marriages were traditionally and legally permissible in those days. Period!
If we claim to know any better now to fault these marriages, we can only use our measuring rods for judging our own marriages to fulfill our expectations. Simply, folks in those days had a different System, then, that allowed such marriages. And they did not break any Laws marrying like that.
Such is why many believe morality is largely relative. Nevertheless, a few things have withstood the test of time and Culture to always remain what they are. Such are Death and Birth, Hunger and Thirst. The others simply keep evolving.
When a person is born, it is definitive that he or she was not on Earth till the time he or she was born as a baby. When a person dies, it is definitive that he or she has moved on and out of this World permanently. Anything in between is subject to the influence of the environment in which they occur to either evolve or devolve.
While we grow from Birth to Death, many things cross our paths to change or influence our perceptions and beliefs. Some of the new things we learn become more permanent than others, and could impact on many other things that our lives revolve around.
Our Culture and Traditions are all aspects of those things between our Birth and Death, and are subject to changes that may or may not make our lives better. We tend to cling on to what we have come to believe make our lives better.
So, newer and younger generations only come to meet what has lasted longer, across generational boundaries. Nkrumah and Danquah and their parents belong to a much different era from now. A few of us have lived across those two distinct eras to better understand why our younger generations fault much of the older generations. However, being overly judgmental does no one any good. It impedes our efforts to learn the map of our social development.
Surely, our current environment and the abundance of knowledge we have opportunities to access offer us a greater chance to prefer a better set of living conditions than our forefathers and -mothers lived. But even so, there are vicissitudes of life we cannot dodge which compel some of us who have experienced both eras to sometimes say "the good old days" when referencing some portions of the past.
It needs a certain open-mindedness to rightly appreciate the differences between now and then, today and the past. Simply disparaging something of the past without understanding how it came to be may not do us any better.
Long Live Ghana!!!

Sarpong, don't act like you just stepped into the fray to set peace. You had long been trashing Nkrumah before Kwarteng started his theses on Nkrumah. But I would say, we only need a moment to correct an erroneous assertion, if we have the appropriate evidence and right logic to do so. We should not protract the argument needlessly.
And if we were to follow all that you guys have been putting forth, we would have to acknowledge what Kwarteng began his piece with as the reason for going after Danquah's family. Just as you, Sarpong, showed in your quotation of Kwarteng's, he indicated that his was in reaction to others who had been describing Nkrumah as a pedophile.
Nevertheless, all these amount to descending to lower depths of disparaging our respective Political idols who happen to be political opponents of each other. And it depicts a certain lack of civility, loss of focus on our current plight, and inexcusable neglect of certain indisputable facts of our Country's past.
We must all remember that in all their heated debates for political power, no where can we find any of these past Political leaders attacking each other so disparagingly as we are doing to them today. They all knew each other first-hand, and were in better position to know of the other's background and family than we could learn of them. So, if those leaders did not find any justification or wisdom in tarnishing the background of each other's then, why should we make it our goal to do so on their behalf today?
Secondly, given the fact that written records of the births of many of our ancestors were done by foreigners who only approximated the spelling of names and other terms in our Language to what they (the foreigners) could make out of them, it is possible that 'Ngolomah' was some misspelling of the name 'Nkrumah' given their proximity in sound. Besides, has anyone researched to establish that 'Ngolomah' is an existing Liberian name that Nkrumah's father could have been a Liberian with such name?
More, what did Nkrumah himself provide as to the origin of his name 'Kwame Nkrumah'? And which of the two dates associated with his birth matches his hebdomadally derived first names? For all we can prove, September 21, 1909 was a Saturday matching his name 'Kwame'.
If anyone even mentioned September 18, 1912 as his date of birth, he could neither have been a 'Kwame' nor 'Kofi' as that day was a Wednesday. However, September 21, 1912, like September 21, 1909, was also a Saturday, which matches his name 'Kwame'. Where did Nkrumah claim that his date of birth was September 18? We would like to see the source. The sources for the other dates are known, if not ubiquitous.
Now, regarding the marriage of older men to much younger women, it had long been our Tradition, and in fact that of other advanced Nations as well, including the Europeans, until quite recently, that girls were legally married off to older men, many times their age.
Families would even give their daughters for betrothal, as early as the child's infancy but would only let the marriage rites be fulfilled after Puberty. The practice even still exists in a few other parts of the World.
As much as we may all abhor the practice today, it is unfair to criminalize the men who married these women in their times, since it was not illegal then, or known to have hurt the girls. I acknowledge that the same cannot be said about all our past behaviors, like say, Slavery. Even so, we could agree that all these practices were amoral then as they are now.
We must honestly acknowledge that even today, while some Countries consider 18 years as the start of adulthood, others set that age differently. Some consider 21 as the beginning of adulthood. Furthermore, without justifying the practices, I must point out for honest discussions that the lifespan of our folks in the past, being as short as it was, could have influenced the practice of getting our women to marry early to start procreating, which was the main goal of many families for encouraging marriage.
So, before we condemn either Danquah's parents, or Nkrumah for marrying younger women, we must honestly appraise the context under which any of those marriages occurred. Were those marriages illegal? Or, immoral?
Nowhere in the USA, of all Nations, would a marriage between a 26 year-old and 50 year old be considered a pedophilic act by the man, even though many would object to the vast difference in their ages. The woman at 26 would be a full-fledged adult, capable of making her own independent decisions about her life. That would not be the same if the woman were 16 years old, legally underage. We must appreciate the distinction.
So, long as no coercion to impose the marriage on the 26 year-old woman is involved, there is no reason why others should make derogative comments about the partners. Surely, we know in these modern times how our prevailing lifestyle and living conditions make such an age difference between married partners of 26 and 50 ,respectively, largely undesirable. But that does not necessarily criminalize the man for marrying such a young full-fledged adult. Period!
Nkrumah was therefore not a Pedophile. He did not marry an underage girl. Neither was the marriage imposed on the woman at 26.
During the days of Danquah's father, as much as the nominal age of the mother could have been correctly set at 16, there were other criteria that our Traditions used to characterize a girl as marriageable; those criteria would make a 16 year-old girl 'mature' enough for marriage. I know that puberty was one of the criteria. That may not be sufficient in these days to qualify a girl as mature for marriage in most Countries. However, we would be using today's knowledge and lifestyle desires to judge our Ancestors. And that is not totally fair. Even our elders today acknowledge the lack of knowledge in those days, and refer to that era as "Abagyimbere" meaning 'the days of folly', primitive days, if you will.
There are certain aspects of our humanity that will remain the same throughout our existence, and there are others that lend themselves to change for the better. Some depend on our attained knowledge, discovery and inventions. While the basis for morality has always been the same, many of our actions were not recognized as hurtful to be seen as amoral until later. It is our current level of awareness that we may have to bring to decide what would be acceptable or legal and what is not in our days.
So, let us quit banging on and trashing our past leaders with our newly discovered sense of morality. We could only judge their morals with what we know that they knew then to be right and wrong.
We have larger problems to deal with today that dwelling too long on issues like this only takes away scarce resources we could expend to enhance our chances of succeeding now.
A passing correction of an error relating to the past is enough. That would have to be done convincingly with impeccable logic and indisputable evidence. And then we should move on.
Long Live Ghana!!!

You are losing my respect anytime you make comment regarding my perspective on Nkrumah.
I have never attacked President Nkrumah personally of being corrupt. My parting ways with him have always been his PDA, One party state and the President for life policies.
I have always said that no President should be removed forcefully for having bad economic policies and that is why I have been against any coup apart from the 1966.
I have always supported the 1966 coup not because people were lining up for essential commodities but because Nkrumah left the electorate no option to remove him if they so desired.
I have always said that Nkrumah's President for life and one party state nonsense was not even needed at a time he could have won any election in Ghana for a long time.
Why did Nkrumah pursue the President for life nonsense when according to a referendum held to declare one party state he "won" by 99.7%? If this was not a rigged election, then I will have to believe even people who supported United Party(UP) even voted to ban their own party.
The only time I bring about the economic situation in my argument against Nkrumah apologists and appendages who cult worship him is when they tried to tell those who did not experience his rule as if Ghana was utopia when he was President.
When Nkrumah apologists try to compare him to Lee Kuan Yew whose policies economically was more capitalistic and close ties to both United Kingdom and USA unlike Nkrumah who tied our economic prosperity to th3e Soviet Union and was publicly ranting about the evils of capitalism whilst behind the scenes he was begging the western 'evil' empires to finance his projects and budgets. It was the hypocrisy of Nkrumah that some of us found unacceptable.
It is very disingenuous on your part to accuse me of being the reason Kwarteng is doing his cut and paste.
He can do the cut and paste till thy kingdom come and it will not change anything. Has he ran out of those positive Nkrumah cut and paste he has to start destroying the reputation of others?
When people stop exercising their brains support blindly, it ruffles my feathers, Berko.

I thought I had long lost that respect with you, Sarp. You spared me none when you last dumped a heap load of morass on me for expressing my disagreement with you on an issue.
You see, I have not lost my respect for you, despite our occasional disagreements. That may well spell the difference between your assessment of people and mine.
I have long chartered a middle-of-the-road course, which I did not easily come to appreciate. But I, honestly, have, and know to have grown wiser by that.
You have called me all kinds of names: from 'goody-goody two shoes' to 'Nkrumah apologist' and 'closeted NDC member' and more. All because I did not simply tow the line you have been stuck in, which is to always unconditionally bash others who disagree with you or challenge your facts. You hate it when I commend or agree with those who like Nkrumah.
But my dear Sarpong, life is not always black and white, even though we have day and night. Some days simply turn gloomy and grey. More importantly, you may have missed a bit about my background that I shared on this forum sometime ago. That part of my life might have made it easier for me to maintain that moderating stance, politically.
I would be denying who I am if I chose to claim any rigid alliance with any political spectrum in Ghana. I would not like to waste too much of your precious time so I would simply mention that I grew up knowing and dearly loving people who belonged to the UP/NLM polarity as well as the CPP polarity. I had the chance of seeing, first-hand, the rare loving relationship that existed between my Dad who was adopted into the CPP tradition, and Busia's Family, especially, Nana Kusi Appiah, Busia's Brother, and Auntie Akosuah, their Niece. Nana Mbore Bediatuo II, a cousin of Busia's and the then Wenchihene, was my father's close friend as well. When my father began his career as one of the only 3 General Contractors in Brong Ahafo, he moved to Wenchi, B/A and Nana Kusi-Appiah gave my father half of his newly built house to live in and share with his niece's, Autie Akosua's husband, Mr. Kwakye, a Social Welfare District Officer at Wenchi. It just also happened that Mr. Kwakye, incidentally had my father's nephew who I loved dearly, Baffo, one of the kindest people and most handsome I have ever met, as his house aid.
I attended School at Wenchi Methodist B Primary with some of Busia's nephews as well. We would all go to clean up Busia's Bungalow from time to time and wipe clean his elaborate, most envious library over weekends.
I could hear my father always saying that their lives transcended Politics as it was then. Quite astonishingly, my General Afrifah's sister, Janet, became our family friend who my father and step-mother treated like family, often rescuing her from her hard drinking and abusive husband. Whenever there were any quarrel between Auntie Janet and her husband and she was physically abused, was threatened, she would call for my parents to come pick her up to safety. Then my Dad would later find some mediators to settle their feud and have them start over. That was years before the 1966 Coup occurred.
When that coup occurred and my Dad and other CPP prominent folks were jailed, my eldest sister was attending Saint Monica's Teacher Training College, and Auntie Janet had sought for divorce and moved back to Mampong, her hometown. During Vacations, Auntie Janet would ask my sister to spend some of the vacation with her at Mampong, where Saint Monica's College was.
I must admit that Janet did all she could to get his brother to help release my Dad at the earliest possible time. It was a difficult situation for Afrifah. And I cannot say he did not do much for my Dad. My Dad was not released until 1969, when no adverse findings were determined against him. My family was grateful to Auntie Janet, even so. And she continued to be our family friend till her death recently.
My Dad went into self-imposed exile soon after his release from jail. My siblings and I were left to our mothers to fend for us but we never bore either Dr. Busia or Afrifah any personal grudges.
So, Sarpong, put yourself in my position and see how you could blindly side with any one side of our polarized Political extremities. I have over 31 siblings all over Ghana. Sorry, if my Dad was sexually overactive. But the guy was relatively well-to-do, very affable, honest, straight-shooter, and a former Chief of my hometown who abdicated for his Uncle, who the town's youth had dethroned for political reasons, to reclaim his stool. My town's folks demanded that my grandfather, the Chief and my father's Uncle, who was a UP member convert to CPP so that the town would attract vital developmental projects from the CPP Government. And when my grandfather would not budge, the Youths deposed him. Then they chased my Dad all over the country to find him to fill his Uncle's place on the Stool. My Dad did not believe or want Political differences to ruin his relationship with his Uncle and therefore declined the Stool. He then kept evading the Towns folks who were bent on bringing him home to be the new Chief. Eventually, they caught up with my Dad and brought him home, citing his obligation to the Town as overriding his Uncle's relationship with him.
My Dad was subsequently installed as the new Chief. Nevertheless, he had one more card to play to settle this feud. He then managed to convince his Uncle to convert to CPP for the sake of the Town and their relationship. My Grandfather agreed and my father simply abdicated and appealed to the Town to reinstate his Uncle, which the Town did.
My father really never wanted to be a Chief, and even after the recent death of his Uncle, he never sought for the Stool. He still lives, hovering around 90.
So, Sarpong, Providence has its own way of evening up situations for us all, when we allow some room for that. Nothing stays forever that Humans build. Only what emanates from the Almighty could be expected to last forever. Hence, when you are differ on issues today, we may agree on more important issues tomorrow for our mutual advancement. Therefore, it would be wrong to make a permanent enemy of you, no matter how you insult me.
But having learnt what I have over the years, I have good reasons to prefer staying objective and pointedly blunt when it comes to our Nation's future and who I know can lead us to safer grounds.
My 30 plus siblings have intermarried into all kinds of tribes and races. I am no better than any of them or their other halves of their families, just because of where I originally hail from. We are all one big family, even though we would head-butt each other on certain issues. Love transcends all, Sarpong. Love conquers all our fears and doubts.
So, in our hours of darkness, when we feel deserted for some out-of-whack different opinions, we need not hate others we disagree with.

Speak for yourself; you are full of anger, abuse words, hatred and name callings. These are the marks of intellectual bankruptcy. Look, Kwame Nkrumah is the greatest leader Ghana and Africa have ever had. Commit suicide.
