Thank you for this thoughtful article. The NPP thinks that by complaining about unfairness in the the way political institution operate, they legitimate their right to office and future accusations against the ruling government. It's pathetic how the largest opposition party instead of keeping their house in order or offering alternative policy options have resorted to wining. This party is yet to learn that elections are not won in accra or FM stations but on the grounds throughout the country. Instead of doing the hardwork, they are all sitting in accra blaming president Mahama for all the country's problems thinking that is sufficient to win elections. The NDC has started to do something and if the NPP continues to behave this way, they will lose this election ,big time. Should that happen, they should please stop harassing the EC.

WHOEVER IS CHOSEN BY THE PRESIDENT WILL BE UNACCEPTABLE TO SOME. NO SUCH A PERSON EXISTS AS A NEUTRAL GHANAIAN. THE ADVICE FROM THE PIECE FROM MR. SAFO SUGGESTS TO ALL POLICAL PARTIES TO DO THEIR WORK AT THE BALLOT BOX AND ACCEPT THE RESULTS, FOR THE EC IS JUST ONE PERSON AND REPORTS THE RESULTS AS PRESENTED TO HIM. EVERY POLITICAL PARTY MUST DO THEIR HOMEWORK AT THE BALLOT BOX AND THERE WILL BE PEACE!!!

A very good piece, written in a simple way for all to understand. It is true that, elections are won through the ballot box. Nobody can castigate Dr. Afari-Djan. He has done so well, declaring two elections victories for the NPP, and three for the NDC. To majority of Ghanaians, the npp is just in for mischief, and knowing very well that things will not go their way, has started finding problems even before the elections are held. They are yet to tell us just one single thing that they will do better than this current government, that is messing us up.Why are they trying to shift the goal posts to suit them, thereby by-passing the laid down laws concerning that appointment? If they have done their home work and are very sure of victory in the next elections, I see no reasons for all this noise. President Mahama can appoint his brother, they will still win. It's like they have nothing with which to convience Ghanaians to vote for them. Like the Dr. said, they should rather train their polling Agents to do a good job instead of always trying to subvert the powers of the president. Unless they are not sure of their candidate. They should stop holding this country for a ramson.Enough of it.

Yes, I agree that it is the electoral process itself that is the most important thing, not so much the integrity, or the person of, the Electoral Commissioner. The EC only needs to supervise a process that works on its own correctly. And that's the problem with us. We need safeguards to ensure that no one can cheat. If these are in place, not even the EC can change the results. It will be so transparent that no one can say anything else than what the true figures say.
And this is where we can learn something from the Nigerians who deployed technology to make their elections as transparent as possible. Our country is not technologically advanced. It is only eternal vigilance that can prevent cheating. It's a difficult call since the electoral process is a very lengthy one. From the registration of voters to the actual voting and the counting of such takes years. This leaves a lot of room for cheating. We should try to reduce it.
More suggestions are needed as to how to make the actual process of voting transparent. The author provided some but we still need more of such suggestions instead of discussions that focus on who the President should appoint (or not appoint).
