elude the leadership of the continent. In his speech declaring independence on March 1957, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the leader of the new nation, stated that the independence of Ghana was meaningless unless it
was linked up with the total liberation of all the African continent. The visionary leader therefore set about founding the Organization of African Unity, and in 1963, the OAU charter was ratified in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. But from the start, the Organization was seen as a talking shop for the continent’s motley crowd of unlikely bedfellows posturing for positions of power. Thus for nearly four decades after the formation of the continental body, the Organization failed to impact the unity of the African peoples in any meaningful sense. In July, 2000, by the Constitutive Act enacted in Lome, Togo, the continent’s
leadership opted to transform the body into the African Union (“AU”). But the African Union has proved
itself to be worse than its predecessor. The recent leadership role by NATO in the overthrow of the
Ghadafi regime has exposed the toothlessness of the continental bulldog and left many wondering about the relevance, future, use and function of the AU. It is the submission of this writer that there can be no African unity without the blueprint of true democracy solidly built on the universal rights and freedoms of the African peoples..."

Nkrumah failed to unite Africa because his blueprint for leadership was dictatorship. That is why I was positing that if he had had a broadly democratic blueprint and credentials for the unity of Africa, he would have succeeded and left a great legacy of democracy.
Thus, Nkrumah's arrant dictatorship was the cause of the collapse of the African union government. Other leaders knew that he was going to impose a dictatorship on the continent and probably incarcerate them later.
That was my thesis for that paricular article. And here, my use of "visionary" was sarcastic, just as my use of the phrase "great redeemer" in the same essay.

"The preamble to the OAU Charter did make reference to freedom, equality, justice and dignity as essential ingredients for the legitimate aspirations of the African peoples, but there were no enabling clauses in the subsequent articles to give effect to these noble objectives. Indeed, Article Three of the Charter clearly proscribed any member country from interfering in the internal affairs of other member countries. This Article was a broad protective sweep which gave ample cover to the leaders to launch assaults on the fundamental freedoms of their peoples. Thus in Ghana for example, the Great Leader built what was then the largest prison in Africa not to accommodate criminals but to imprison his political opponents. The Redeemer declared the nation a one-party state with himself as life president and set about developing a personality cult through the Young Pioneers who were indoctrinated to betray their parents and neighbors who said anything negative against the Great Leader. In these and many other state actions, freedom of speech became anathema to the Ghanaian populace, and the court system which was seen as the guardian of the people’s rights came under siege when the Chief Justice was fired for failing to return a verdict favorable to the Great Redeemer. All this while, the Great Leader was gallivanting on the continent to preach freedom from imperialism in his quest for the total liberation of the whole African continent. And what he did against his own people became off limits to the scrutiny of the Organization essentially because of Chapter Three of the Charter which proscribed any interference in the internal affairs of the member nations. Thus from the very beginning, the OAU was a mere conduit for the expression of the overweening ambition of certain African leaders, and never a means for the procurement of any fundamental rights of the African peoples."

When people were writing that Nkrumah was a dictator, you could have told them the same; paraphrasing your statement: " stop that useless and waste of time nonsense, and just say what will solve our problems". On the contrary, you didn't say anything, either because you believed in those lies and therefore stayed indifferent or you don't have a future plan for your own country since (to you) anything goes whether lies or not. Therefore mere discussion of current issues calms you down.
Come to think of it, do you know the number of crucial discussions that went and still go on in Ghana (most of which can solve our problems outright) that Post-Nkrumah government failed to heed ? I bet you don't know any.There are a lot of them (Dr. Barwumia in our current time also made inputs and what was the results--the current government does not need his advice they say)
I asked myself, why won't any government listen to anyone especially if it comes from their opponent ? The answer--Because of Thwarted political history of Ghana which brings about mistrust and distrust.
In all, I think it's an impatient person who will not want a holistic and scholastic truth of a country's political history be told. And we all know impatience breeds chaos, violence, unintelligent reasoning etc. And that is the CROWN of Nkrumah's Ghana today.

Now if you go to court and tell the judge that e.g. you joined ISIS because of their charismatic leader you will be punished on basis of your crime commited not that of the leader.
You cannot shelter African leaders who were dictators because Nkrumah was benevolent "dictator". Such a premise is a malicious falsehood and would certainly land you or your client in jail.
Look Sarpong, everyone is responsible for their own actions. I am not so religiously inclined but this much I know as the good old book says:
Ezekiel 18:20 "The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
or this;
Jeremiah 31:30 "But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge."
or the following:
Ezekiel 18:4 "Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die.
So those who commit crimes are punished for their crimes not others.
By the way, Nkrumah did not creat a one Party state. The NLM/UP Opposition imploded. Busia took flight in a stunt self-imposed exile. Some of them like Tawiah Adamarfio jumped ship - so in the of absence of a wrecked ship opposition; Ghana invariably became a one Party state. Ask late Lee of Singapore. Nkrumah Lives!

We wrote sometime ago that Marxist use dialectics to analyze both natural and social problems and make a conclusion. Justice Sarpong you have a functioning body because all the parts of your body are joined together like that of an animal call Homo Sapiens. In nature I have not come across any fauna and flora which search for any of its body part elsewhere when it need it to perform a function. I have not seen a tree in the garden dismembered.A tree in te garden look like the same type in the wild.
Thus unity is the prerequisite for any body to perform, and society is a social formation, and lets say a social body make up of people. Though it is made up of different biological entities, they have decided and resolved to form a social unity or body. Emanating from that there are single persons who form a family, clain, tribe and nation. Even the crusaders were from a nation.
However the unity that people with sane mind oppose is one that is formed on the subjugation of others as has been the case with Western Europe.
Biological unity has been transferred to social unity, and without union of people there will not be society. Kwame Nkrumah's African Unity was to be formed on what unity connotes, devoid of teaming up to oppress and suppress other people as is the case with Western Europe and U.S.

These are the awkward truths that must be told about Kwame Nkrumah for those who like to defend his wickedness because their corrupt parents were deprived of the sources of stolen wealth by the coup of 1966!
