Omamsomfo Ghananaba,
There is really no need to beat around the bush. Taking, expecting, demanding or accepting money from a client before attending to them presumes that your reportage or conduct (as in the case of MPs) will be favorable to him. As a journalist, no one who pays your transportation (soli) expects you to file an unfavorable report about them even if that unfavorable report is an accurate reporting of events. Similarly, an MP who develops the habit of accepting small amounts of monies from citizens before attending to their needs will pretty quickly graduate from this to big time acceptance of bribes and other illegal activities.
Ghanaba, we Ghanaians are very good at cracking the door open to let in a little illegality with the justification that, after all the amount involved is no big deal and no one is being hurt. The problem is, once we can justify a small act of corruption, it becomes very easy to justify bigger crimes. The point really is not in the amount of money or value involved, it is the principles, ethics and the legality involved. What the journalists and MPs have started doing is a very slippery slope. Very soon the lines between corruption and legality will become very blurred.
