When Nkrumah took over, what were "high schools" were called "Colleges", and there were only a handful, with none in the North, so the Ghana Educational Trust was established.
The capital Accra was provided with "estates building with modern sewage. So New Estate, Labone Estate, North Labone, Kaneshi, Kanda, etc.
Paid "mentoring" existed at ALL the Ministries for "long vac" students. Workers Brigade took care of the "unemployed youth".
The regional capitals had "City Guards" for "traffic control" for humans and vehicles.

PS: Plagiarism is stealing intellectual property. So when you plagiarize Joseph Annor’s feature Article of Monday, 17 August 2009 and add some unknown source as if you have written it shows how mischievous you are. Shame on you DR. SANQAS.
DR. SANQAS you are a damn F++king liar to say the least. To the best of my knowledge Thatcherism did not break the social net of the British economy. What Thatcher did was to break the back of the TUC labour movement in order to import America style of capitalism into Britain during Reagan’s presidency. It did not work. See, after the Second World War Keynesian policies were applied in Britain which ask or permits the state to take her responsibilities in the Job market thereby creating state monopolies. There is nothing wrong with that. The British economy, that of France, Germany and a vast majority of the European economy still function of a mix economy of social democracy. DR. SANQAS you are a novice and a silly idiot who without any proper research quotes from unknown writers whose populist views against Kwame Nkrumah did not make the cut.
To say that Nkrumah was on a state visit to North Vietnam shows your lack of authentic information. Kwame Nkrumah was on a UN peace mission as a vanguard of the Non-Aligned Movement of which he was a founder.
So that in your small bird brain are small projects? The Adomi Brigde still serves Ghana today however small it might be in your tainted mind. The double rail track from Kotoku to Hunni-Valley was built by Nkrumah to run along the Mining areas and important imports to reach to capital from Takoradi when Tema harbor was not completed. You have no slightest idea about the anatomy of Ghana.
The one party came about when the fragmented opposition imploded and many of the UP members jumped ship to join the CPP including Tawiah Adamafio. Busia took flight and went into self-imposed exile. The one party state was passed by a bill in parliament. What do you shit-arse know about Ghana except reading from books of unknown authors? Some of us lived and need not to be told.
If Nkrumah had 5 million pounds he wouldn’t have been wallowing in Conakry. Nkrumah died penniless and the attest to was when his family I mean Fathia and her children had to be supported and housed by various Ghana governments. DR. SANQAS, Nkrumah’s children were struggling like any ordinary Ghanaian until they joined politics in Ghana.
You liar even cannot tell where the Sugar factory was built. Komenda Sugar factory was up and running. Asuature was a second factory to supply the northern section of Ghana. Even technology savvy Germany and Britain made mistakes in the building of airports in the 21st century. Heathrow terminal 5 hello! Berlin hello!
Nkrumah the mastermind built the meat factory strategically at Bolgatanga because it was also close to Upper Volta and by so doing Ghana could easily import cattle from Upper Volta. The hide from the cattle were to be prepared for the Kumasi shoe factory which was built by the world famous Bata family from Chek. Do you bloke DR. SANQAS know what Achimota sandals are? I bet not. You were then in your village bare footed and running about half naked I guess.
Look, you have no clue and honestly , I pity you for your lack of authentic information. Mate Maho descendants have been fed on the travesty of TRUTH and it will stay that way until thy kingdom come. Since when is Kumasi in western Ghana? Which geography master taught you that?. Look you are miserable a RAT of the worst kind.
Ghana airways bought her planes from BOAC and the defunct Pan American Airways. Boy you have no idea about Kwame Nkrumah. The Vickers VC10 is BAC (British Aircraft Corporation. Ghana Air Force planes were from Italy and the pilots were trained by Israelis and Indians. Ghana Navy got her ships from Britain and Germany. The Black star line 14 fleets of ships were all British from Liverpool. Nkrumah brought the best brand of the western industries to Ghana. From Nestle, Switzerland, Sanyo –Japan Akasanoma electrical appliances, Akosombo- Italian built, Tema food complex – German built, Tema harbor British – built, Saltpond ceramics- Italian built, Peduase Lodge Italian- built, Valco Canadian-American venture, Textile factory - Dumas Holland, Glass factory etc were all the best brands from the west. So what is socialist or communist about Nkrumah? In merchandizing it was Syrians, Lebanese, Indians and Pakistanis who were at the forefront. Ever heard of Hatramani of COS fame. The man who supplied most teams in Ghana with sporting equipments whose store was opposite the ice company close to Glamour store?
FYI, Danquah have no idea who Nkrumah was. It was Paa Grant (Businessman) who invited Nkrumah and footed the bill for his passage. Danquah was broke like a church mouse. They were all on the pay list of Paa Grant. Danquah was even not popular in his Akyem backyard. Stop disturbing our ears with that province politician who plagiarized Mensah-Sabbah just as you are doing.
The PDA did not come like a bolt from the blue sky. The first attempt to kill Nkrumah began in 1955 when his house in Accra New Town was bombed. So the bombing which you DR. SANQAS claimed started in1962 has a prelude. Who gave you that doctor title? Did you buy it on the internet? SHAME!
When it fits your whims and caprices you mention Felix Houphouet-Boigny of Ivory Coast or his stooge partners in crime. Who did worst than Felix Houphouet-Boigny? A president for life; banned all oppositionparties like Mobutu; built a white elephant Yamoussoukro-Basillica
in his hometown. The largest church in the world has fewer worshippers. What a waste!
DR. SANQAS, your hearsay and rumours account of events in Ghana have been recycled many times to defame or disparage Kwame Nkrumah but the harder you non-entities tried the more famous Nkrumah became. Just ask pigmy Busia. Dwarf Busia was so scary that he even banned images of Nkrumah but no avail because the TRUTH is like a cork it will always surface. Kwame Nkrumah is unsinkable. Nkrumah lives! Deal with it!

Unless a person has his/her brain irreversibly damaged by Nkrumah’s Young Pioneer and Ideological nonsense, Nkrumah should be the greatest example of what no great leader will ever do. For a great leader begins life essentially as a great and noble person full of character: wisdom, compassion and foresight…… But Nkrumah was essentially irresponsible if not altogether wicked: there is no record that when he traveled abroad, he helped his mother or family members or any of the people in his community at Nkroful. The impression one gets is that he abandoned them. There is no record that he performed any reciprocal kindness to any of the numerous friends that helped him to rise in life. Rather, there is a record that he incarcerated most of them. He did not possess the wisdom or the foresight to see clearly that after all his sordid acts of betrayal of friends and comrades, he was exposed and alone and without any protection, whether physical or spiritual. In the end, bereft of all the nobility and trappings of leadership, he was violently overthrown to die miserably in exile, where he never again saw his own wife and children. There is enough punishment here alone to qualify his fate as poetic justice. In Grecian mythology, leaders who exhibited Nkrumah’s kind of hubris were similarly punished by the gods…..
And elsewhere, ordinary folks will cite Nkrumah as a lesson in evil leadership and its eventual consequences, and never as a model to be emulated in any way. We should see him as a kind of Agamemnon who was so drunk with power that he must sacrifice his own daughter to turn the tide. Yet the man trained an army of crack-head septuagenarian and demented sycophants who, in their youth, became demeaned in Nkrumaism, a brain withering albeit farcical mythology in whose context the mantra has always been “Nkrumah does no wrong” and “Nkrumah never dies”. Now mostly suffering from Alzheimer's disease, these senile lot behave as lobotomies as they deeply inhale the dictator’s fart as they would some cologne of oriental quality, or lap up his freshly expectorated phlegm as they would some vanilla ice cream!!

For the most part, the Nkrumaists have agreed that Nkrumah’s Preventive Detention Act was wrong-headed. None of the arguments they make in support of it holds water. Like Nkrumah, they create in their mind’s eye a motif of non-existent danger for the country for which Nkrumah needed to incarcerate his own cabinet members as well as members of the opposition in order to stabilize the country. They go ahead to criminalize all the members of the big six as traitors who were behind numerous attempts to assassinate Nkrumah. But the hint one gets in this whole struggle to white-wash Nkrumah’s PDA is their awareness that the act was per se evil but necessary under the circumstances. We do not need then to debate anything further, except that no leader is deemed great who committed Nkrumah’s kind of necessary evil; and if we have to make references to necessary evil somewhere else to justify any act performed by Nkrumah, that ends the debate right there and justifies our designation of Nkrumah as a brutal dictator. This is so because no act of excusable evil could credential a knee-jerk leader as a hero. A hero’s credential is intrinsic in some act of self-sacrifice and dedication in the face of great tribulations. Since Nkrumah exploited his perceived tribulation and turned it into an excuse to embark upon a course of action to benefit himself, his acts are never those of a hero, but rather that of a brutal dictator who might have instigated tribulations in order to justify his dictatorial acts. For the so-called agitations in the country, he abolished all opposition, declared Ghana one party state and declared himself president for life. These are all self-serving acts of a person whose psychological orientation was bent toward tyranny. In the face of all these self-concocted problems, Nkrumah had his image emblazoned upon our national currency, his statue erected at parliament house and certain books, like George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” banned. His tyrannical acts and massive corruption also inspired two satires of note within the African’s intellectual circles: Ayi Kwei Armah’s “The Beutyful Ones are Not Yet Born”, and Wole Soyinka’s “Kongi’s Harvest”.

Those factories were our teething problems. We were supposed to learn from them and become better at manufacturing as the time went.
Remember in the 60s nobody wanted Japanese goods because we thought they were inferior. But later everybody was craving for Japanese made goods and today today their cars are among the best.
People expect that a country that had emerged from 100+ years of colonialism, with no educated and skilled work force would just start producing the best products in the world. Impossible! We needed to learn and some of the progress we have made today are based on Nkrumah's efforts.
Nkrumah made some mistakes but let us give him his due credit. The positive things he did for Ghana far outweigh his negative traits.

Actually, by his own accounts, SAS may have been 4, not 2, when Nkrumah was overthrown. But your point is still valid. At four, he didn't see anything. He may not have started school then or may have been in kindergarten (which were not common in those days). I doubt if he remembers anything about the Ghana Young Pioneers and their songs and displays. He may not remember VC 10 which was a modern aircraft during those days. If you were a good sprinter, you were called VC 10. Some people even wrote VC 10 on their commercial vehicles to indicate that the vehicle was modern and could speed a lot...
But, of course, you don't have to have first hand experience of historical events to write about them. But this means you have to do thorough independent academic research that goes far beyond the propaganda statements issued by both sides. Your research must be based on an accurate assessment of the atmosphere of the times. You cannot just use today's standards to judge and condemn people who lived in different times.

These were the same old stories we've been hearing since the commissions of enquiries were instituted by the National Liberation Counci to look into the Nkrumah regime.
There's nothing new in all these accusations lined up here. They were all part of the concerted effort at vilifying the man especially immediately after his overthrow. Some of these may be true and Nkrumah did indulge in some excesses but many are just lies. The man didn't have any money in any hidden accounts. He was not as money conscious as Kufuor.
The thing we should be asking ourselves is that if Nkrumah was this bad as his detractors are trying to make us believe, why is he still so popular today 50 years after his overthrow? He must have done some good, surely and it is that which our youth are craving for - not his excesses... His present day enemies cannot live with that!

NATO does not have hovercrafts because none of NATO members manufacture it.

You Nkrumaists never cease to amaze me. You quote the recollections of a ten year old and it is alright. You even quote Dennis Austen when it is convenient for you, and there is nothing amiss, but Dr SAS quotes Dennis Austen and even fine Ghanaian minds like John Alex-Hamah and Prof EA Boateng and he is a plagiariser? My o my, we have a very big problem in our country!
What is academic research all about? At least some of us were old enough to see the floundering of those industries. Much of Ghana's cocoa came from Central, Eastern and Ashanti Region in the early days of independence, was it really that smart to put the cocoa factories in Takoradi and Tema? Apart from sand which could be found everywhere, the main raw material of glass, for instance, is Calcium Carbonate, which was derived from shells at Abor and Lake Bosumtwi. So was it very smart to put it at Aboso?
The reason why Aboso Glass Factory was sold for a song by Jerry Boom was because apart from its corrupt "jobs for the boys" beginnings, at a certain point, they couldn't even find the vehicles to go to Abor and Lake Bosumtwi to get the shells. They also did not have the money to pay the women who collected them. That is what Thayer Watkins wrote about and that is what Dr SAS quoted. What is wrong with that?
Kwame Nkrumah undoubtedly was a great man. But he made mistakes, some of them very elementary and terrible, like all ordinary mortals. That is what Dr SAS has been trying to point out, and until we are humble enough to accept his faults and learn from them, we will continue to buy gold chains from Isle of Wight, tables and chairs from China, raise guinea fowls that walk off to Burkina Faso and plant trees in the desert and water them at midday when the sun is at its hottest!

This leads me to a reasonable conclusion that you are only uncomfortable with the information SAS has presented against NKrumah.
Diehard Nkrumaists must realize that unless they present balanced and critical articles on Nkrumah and stop idolizing him, others will continue to unearth the skeletons in his closet. This is exactly what SAS has done here.

Kenneth, what do you expect when Francis Kwarteng carpet bombs this forum with series of pieces extolling the greatness of Nkrumah? You certainly don't expect the other side not to react in one way or the other. This is exactly what is happening. In the end, Nkrumah will become a polarizing figure and this is the last thing Nkrumaist want.
More often than not, the policies and ideologies of Nkrumah is being presented as a " scientific truth" that must be adopted by Africans if we are to develop. The refrain is that Africa must unite or it will perish. But we all know that the countries in South America are doing well although they are not United.
Kenneth, you are correct I admire Nkrumah, and I have said so. However, I have been critical of some of his politics on due process, the one party state and the life presidency declaration. Additionally, I have been critical of his funding and training of saboteurs and the use of them to interfere in the affairs of our neighbors. This is not different from what SAS and other non Nkrumaist commentators are doing. Please tell me a world leader without policy flaws? We should avoid being thin skulled and be critical of Nkrumah although he did good.

Keneth, it even appears that Nkrumah was dancing so fast he failed to realize that Ghana was even Bankrupt in 1965. In a cabinet meeting, Frimpong Ansah of the Bank of Ghana reported to him that our foreign currency reserves stood at a meagre five hundred Thoudsand pounds. Nkrumah was in shock and didn't believe Frimpong Ansah. He had to get affirmation from others at the meeting to realize the situation. Remember that he started with two hundred and fifty million pounds and had the income of cocoa. So will it be unfair to attack Nkrumah on over spending although he did several projects as well loan money to some of our neighbors?

Let compare actual quote to what this Dr SAS guy has done.
This is Thayer's quote "In August of 1962 someone tossed a grenade at Nkrumah. He was injured but recovered soon. But long after he recovered from the physical injuries he seemed psychologically affected. He had about 500 arrested and detained indefinitely. He had the legislature pass the Preventive Detention Act which permitted the government to detain anyone or any reason. He closed the borders of Ghana.".
This is SAS's quote -"In August of 1962 someone tossed a grenade at Nkrumah. He was injured but recovered soon. But long after he recovered from the physical injuries, he seemed psychologically affected. He had about five hundred people arrested and detained indefinitely. He had the legislature review and grant him extensive powers under the existing Preventive Detention Act which.. "
See the difference? If you are going to use a source maker sure you use what he said not what you doctored.
Thayer never said "He had the legislature review and grant him.. "
If you were in a university you will be judge a forger and a bad one.
In you zeal to prove what cannot be changed you've decided to use those who don't know much as your sources. Thus eroding your credibility and making you a liar.
When was the PDA passed? 1958. What did Thayer say it was passed? In 1962. Making him a liar too.
You knew his hogwash didn't support your claim so you doctored what he said to back up what you said. Man you are a pathetic. For someone with a doctorate, you are useless than a monkey with a wrench. Pathetic! I hope get canned from wherever you are teaching.

doctoring a free market fundamentalist view point to prove his point is pathetic and dishonest. Thayer Watkins is a free market fundamentalist. Meaning anything social offends his sensibilities.
