I agree that spending $298m to build a mere market is a waste of time -- that is a nice to have but does not add anything to the economic development and well being of the region. I like the inland port idea because it gives another form of transportation of goods other than the usual road but I disagree with having 3 international airports in a small country like Ghana -- at least not at this time when we have funding issues. Instead, I think the money should be poured into providing power and a good rail system. You can't promote the private sector without power and a good rail system. Sure redoing the city as planned beautifies the city, but in the end it does not add to the long term economic well being. I don't have stats on how many international flights we have daily at Kotoka to warrant other international airports but if we have good rail and water system the rest will follow. I see beautifying of the city, international airports as all hanging on the tree but there are some low hanging fruits like power, rail, good road system that ought to be tackled first. We tend to make unplanned political, people pleaser decisions to earn votes instead of long term economic decision to help the area.

Excellent piece, Justice,
The problem with Ghana’s rather haphazard and unsustainable development is that we have always taken a “top-down ” approach to development projects. How much input are the people of Kumasi and Ashanti, in general, bringing to this development? I know about both the Dallas and Chicago examples you cited and the difference in each of those cities, each time I have made a return visit. I am sure that in each of those cases, city and state authorities considered the benefits to the state as top priority, having taken the views of citizens on board beforehand.
In this particular case, central government is looking at the immediate benefit it will bring to the party in power – “short termism.” I love visiting markets in every city I travel to. I used to go through the Kaneshie Market once in a while, to compare with famous markets elsewhere - in Addis Ababa, the Famers’ Market in LA and the famous Balogun Market ne in Lagos, among others. The main part of the Kaneshie Market continues to be deserted year after year. Most people prefer to “hawk” in the areas in front and around it because “passing trade” brings better rewards. It is the same with the Makola Markets in Central Accra.
Yes, it will make a lot more sense to invest that money in an international airport and or inland port than a market that will almost immediately result in unbearable traffic jams, just as Col Baidoo’s useless roundabout did at Kejetia even before it was completed.
At the end of the day, a federal system or even a proper grassroots elected government system where political education starts with real people and their needs would have advanced Ghana far better than our current debacle that only rewards a few tricksters!

All political parties have their development agenda and so work hard to implement it.When it comes priorities of projects one can debate all day but what is important is the development projects going on.If you to stall the project then you can go into consultation which will yield no outcome and delay the project.
The important thing is to encourage the government to go ahead with this project and complete in time and give the stalls to the market women as of priority.Any little delay will mean the end of this laudable project.Lets take this as an NDC regime project and hopefully when the NPP is in power thy can also build on it with the projects you have in mind.
