You misread Samia's worldview. It is not about replicating his father's 'Socialism." It is about excavating what was best in his father's slabs of policy and applying them. Long Live Nkrumah! Whew! After three years of research and a long thesis, you have said absolutely nothing to educate your readers, certainly not me, except to display your vaunty and haughtier attitude.
I don't know where you grew up, and your stage in life. But if you grew up in Ghana like me, and in stage in life like me, you will have a more balanced approach in analyzing Nkrumah's contribution to the development of present day Ghana. Nkrumah's "socialist" policies gave me and many of my contemporaries who grew up in the 60s & 70s a solid foundation to become persons of letters today, and I will not standby or take kindly to hot air from the uninformed about a man who gave it his all for the love of his country. Yes, Nkrumah made mistakes so did most people of his time. Didn't your capitalist friends bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki and destroyed millions of lives in Viet Nam? In your warped and degenerative mind, they were defending their way of life. Iraq is still simmering, fool.
Now let us look at economic systems you have derided in this garbage. I am sure you understand what GDP per capita means. You also understand it is often considered an indicator of a country's standard of living. I am going to give you the rankings of the democratic socialism and your pet pee capitalism in 2013 by World Bank, CIA World Factbook, and United Nations: (DS denotes Democratic Socialism; MC denotes Market Capitalism)
Norway 5th (DS)
Denmark 10th (DS)
Sweden 12th (DS)
USA 14th (MC)
Canada 15th (MC)

*Cuba 90th Socialism
Ghana 140th (MC)

Norway 4th (DS)
Sweden 8th (DS)
Denmark 9th (DS)
USA 12th (MC)
Canada 13th (MC)

*Cuba 86th Socialism
Ghana 143th (MC)
* Without the embargo from the US and his allies, who knows what Cuba could have become with its brand of socialism.
These are unmitigated facts and should be the basis of your analysis. I am so disappointed it took a whole three years of your life to produce this garbage.

Capitalism was a mere existence of error from its birth. Capitalism has not free the wage slave, but have rather made the thrall with which serfdom imprison him more stronger. From the classes of dialectics a biological body that is infested with a disease does all it has at its disposal to free itself of that disease or virus.
It is therefore a biological thing that does not realize, even instinctive that it is infested with a virus that goes into extinction.
The dialectical nature of communism, therefore socialism is to prevent and control infection in society, breed by man's egoism to enslave his brother and appropriate both his labour and natural resources as the case is with developing neo-colonial countries and the imperialist world.
During the time of Kwame Nkrumah Ghanaians were masters in their own home and survey whatever they have.
One of the basic necessities of a person work was guaranteed the right of every Ghanaian during that time, so was the right to education, health and even free and pure tap water. In dialectics and in any science, since science is dialectics you do not compare a diseased body to another diseased body. Thus in medicine doctors are thought to know the nature of a healthy heart and compare it with a diseased one. Philip Kwabena Baidoo Jnr. that is the reason why we shall continue to compare Russian socialism and capitalism as well as the socioeconomic life of Cuba a socialist state to that of other Caribbean nations.
On industrialization, education and health index Cuba a country with sanctions applied to her by the U.S. and her allies is ahead of her on the last two. It is a fact that U.S.citizens go to Cuba for medication as well as post graduate medical training. Cuban doctors and specialist in all aspect of human endeavour are assisting many developing countries to resolve their socioeconomic problems.
For instance Ghana could resolve her energy problems if not that her capitalist development partners, who we rather refer to as underdevelopment partners are not putting spoke in her wheel to achieve that.
As a student in the then Soviet Union which was said to be hungry in 1981 my counterparts in West Berlin do not meet me with bread and coffee, rather they are so happy to receive my communist bread with thanks, but do not want to live under socialism.
It is a fact that the majority of soviet decedents said that socialism is better than capitalism, when even they are forced by their own misunderstanding of events then in the Soviet Union to migrate abroad. I happen to have two hours conversation with Dr. Andrei Sakharov on that matter and both of us came to the conclusion that socialism with its evils is better than capitalism, which the dialectics we say a healthy body with all its evils is better than a diseased one.
When the countries of Eastern Europe decided to have their yellow and velvet revolutions what followed was wars and economic collapse. The majority of the able body has to migrate to the west. The children thy left behind were exposed to various types of drugs my the democrats from the west. In Mongolia cow dung from the farms of the parents of children were canned and given to them to sniff and go high. It is also a fact that all the countries that produce cocaine and opium are friends of NATO.
On technology, the U.S. has to porch scientists from other countries to develop them for her. That is the pathetic sight of capitalism with the snakes it hatched coming home since 2001 to roost.

I only managed to complete this long piece now and so can't comment comprehensively.
I was struck by the number of lies and distortions in Phillip's diatribe too. That's not the only lie. Even claiming that deregulation of the telephone system happened during K4s era is a blatant lie. Telecoms research was one of the subject in our State Building Seminar Group and so I knew quite a lot abt the sector in Ghana and some other African countries in the '90s. Then I got involved commercially. I have just behind me a newsprint in Norwegian, of course, detailing how that Norwegian sold his TV station in order to supply the capital to start what MTN took over with those Lebanee blokes. And we know of how Tsatsu Tsikata also started one mobile company, don't we? All those things preceded the K4 regime.
Overall, the piece is more of an ad hominem attack on Francis rather than debunking what he wrote. It is got nothing to do with the reality of how Western countries developed with the wide scope for private plunder of other nations and people which allowed Western filibusters to accumulate capital beyond anything imaginable in the past during the mercantilist period of the slave trade and exploitation of the free labour of some and then direct colonisation -imperialism - which provides the life blood for the vampire capitalist to survive on. Marx recognised this in his life time and revised his earlier views in the Critique of the Gotha Programme. Lenin further expanded on this with his Imperialism: The Last Stage of Capitalism. And then Nkrumah capped it his contribution with his book Neo-colonialism: The Last Stage of Imperialism. Just imagine Ghana colonising Nigeria alone and passing laws to loot their resources, as some Western nations did, with the loot spreading to even those which didn't. Of course, the Monroe Doctrine ensured that the US had its own Latin American backyard to exploit. Even that, the state played significant direct roles in their devt. That's why Francis referred to the TVA project that built the Hoover Dam and regenerated whole stretch of the US private capital had run down into medieval existence.
All the Asian Tigers have reached where they are now thanks to very active state intervention and participation in the economy. Even setting up state banks to make loans to businesses in certain sectors is direct intervention. The state decides and allocate scarce credit resources, directing it to where it wants. Without that that kind of state support in the recent credit crunch in the West, there would have been a major depression equal to that of the 1930s or worse!
Anyway, this is just for the records. All we want is to Bring Back the State In, just as others are doing and scholars like Peter Evans, D. Rueschemeyer, Theda Skocpol. et all had argued. Had they been listened to, there would have been no Credit Crunch!

Lies, damned lies and statistics! Anyone can use statistics to tell any stories they want.
Source: Same CIA World Factbook. This time based on purchasing power and Cuba doesn’t even feature here. I had the opportunity to work at several o our socialist establishments, including the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, and without exception, none was set up to progress, just jobs for the boys, square pegs in round holes, everyone of them! What did any of them achieve? Which of them ever benefited the average Ghanaian?
Has anyone ever bothered to find out why Asutsuare or Komenda Sugar Factory collapsed? But for socialist jealousy Adra Transport, Poku Transport, Biney Shipping , Kowus Motors, King of Kings, Siaw Group of Companies, Appenteng’s Group, etc would be challenging multinational companies around the world.
The legacies of Lee Kuang Yew, Houphuet Boingy, Kenyatta, Suharto, still live on. Why is that Kwame Nkrumah’s CPP can’t even win local council elections in Ghana? Common be real!

Kwabena, are Ghanaians more educated than Nigerians? I donot have the data, but I can safely argue that inspite of not having Nkrumah to build their educational system, they are at par with us educationally. Do you describe Nkrumah as a demagogue? I do not think so - you can call him whatever name you want but not a demagogue.
What I have noticed about my people is that we lack cognitive perspective - there is a strong analytical deficit in our society and that is our achilles heel. Africans are failing because we do not have the knack for solving problems, and more dangerously we are caught up in this vortex of tribal and partisan politics, which actually does no good to anybody. But to say you celebrate people like Baidoo for their courage in taking a critical look at Nkrumah is very disturbing and in fact alarming.
You see, in philosophy there is ethical doctrine that holds that only what is pleasant or has pleasant consequences is intrinsically good. I see a lot of Ghanaians, including Baidoo in this purview. They look at a system like capitalism and because it is pleasant to the eye or has pleasant consequences, they eliminate other suitors and extol the virtue of their desired system. It is called hedonism or hedonistic. There are many economies that are switching to mixed economies now, and some have been mixed for years, e.g., Canada, Britain, etc. because of the vagaries of capitalism. So imagine you put a person like Baidoo in charge of government, guess what he will do.
I will give you an example, the instability of Ghana's cedi which has caused so much trouble for our economy can be put squarely at the foot of Bawumia under Kufuor in 2007. What Ghanaians do not know is a lot of dollars in Ghana's foreign reserve that Bawumia and Wampa have pumped in the bail out the cedi for the useless redenonomination exercise. These guys got up one day and felt that it will be nice to shave off some zeros of the cedi, and then went ahead and pegged the cedi to the dollar without any consideration for macroeconomics fundamentals. This is the kind of money managers we have at the bank as their behaviour on the job reflect exactly ethical doctrine that holds that only what is pleasant or has pleasant consequences is intrinsically good.
Now let me answer your question. Nigerians came to Ghana in droves in the 60s because of Nkrumah's fee-free compulsory education of which I was a proud beneficially. Many Nigerians made Ghana their permanent home and took advantage of Ghana's fee free compulsory education - It was against the law not to enroll your children in school. At that time Ghana was far ahead of Nigeria in education and academic achievement. Ghana had renowned intellectuals such as Kwagyir Aggrey, JB Danquah, Busia, Kingsley Hayford Addo, and a whole lot of them. This is not to say the names I have mentioned got their education through Nkrumah's policy, but the fact of the matter is Nigerians came to Ghana in the 70s to recruit Ghanaian teachers. I was teaching at Accra Academy at the time, but a lot of my colleagues joined the band wagon and left. The Nigerian government were offering the Ghanaian expats housing and cars as an enticement. During the same period, Liberia and Sierra Leone governments were also in Ghana recruiting our teachers.
I must go, but I will leave you with this; I am who I am today because of Nkrumah's educational policy. There is no way I could have got out of the wretched and hopeless environment of my youth in the small village to teach in a prestigious in North America.

And if your friend is good, he could also show you a few places where you could make cuts and remove stuff that don't really contribute to your argument.
Often friends see mistakes that even the best of us can be blind to.
