What is also a fact is that he allowed himself to be corrupted by his room mate, one Seth Agbenu, a nice Trokosi gentleman and, incidentally, both of them happened to be the course mates, Hall mates and floor mates to yours truly for four years at the former University of Science and Technology, now KNUST. Unlike the pompous Kookoase idiot and the PhD wonnabe, Samuel Adjei Sarfo, Korash( as Kwarteng is affectionately called) is very modest. The inward Trokosi thing is what worries some of us.

Francis, if Dompere in 2010 urged Legon students to "originate their own theories and ideas on the basis that those ideas ... are necessary to improve the human condition", will Dompere agree with children reciting a pledge like "Nkrumah does no wrong"? I was surprised a widely read Nkrumah per your claim, will have young pioneers indoctrinated this way. I donot believe a brainwashed youngster has the capacity to originate any meaning ideas and systems to improve the human condition. I cite the citizens of North Korea as a case on point.
It therefore comes as no surprise that it is mostly in democratic societies that meaningful
ideas have flourished to improve the human condition. Freedom is the Key not dictatorship and a one party state.

Kwadwo, do you really think it is mostly democratic societies that produce meaningful ideas, right?
Have you read Jacques Barzun’s “FROM DAWN TO DECANDENCE: 500 YEARS OF WESTERN CULTURAL LIFE (1500 TO THE PRESENT)? Jared Diamond’s “GUNS, GERMS, AND STEELE: THE FATE OF HUMAN SOCIETIES (OR ITS DOCUMENTARY FILM VERSION? Mark Mazower’s “DARK CONTINENT: EUROPE’S TWENTIETH CENTURY? Peter Kuznick’s (with Oliver Stone) “THE UNTOLD HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES (or its documentary film).
Please if you haven’t already, do now! And if you have the time, please read all of Dr. Dompere’s works on Nkrumah (you should know what he discusses in detail; all I am doing here is presenting snapshots of his work; his is presently editing two works on Nkrumah).
Where did you get that, Kwadwo? Kwadwo, could you do me a big favor? Please go around the world, particularly those you have never seen as democratic, say the USSR, etc., find how many of their people have produced ideas that have practically changed the world? Then compare your date to the parts of Africa that are democratic in your opinion. Let me have the data when you are done!
Russia (the former USSR, I mean) produced some of the world's best literature under communism! Have you heard of Michail Sholokov, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Andrei D. Sakharov, Nikolay Basov, Lev D. Landau, Igor Tamm, and Nikolay Semyonov...? (This is short list comprising a chemist, physicists, literature? These are thinkers who produced some of the world's best ideas under communism. They are Nobel Laureates.
I can go to China and give a tall list of individuals who produced some of the world's innovative ideas under communism? How many Nobel Laureates have African democracies produced in the area of chemistry, physics, economics and medicine (I am not to obsessed with Nobel Prize in Literature here and Nobel Peace Prize here; Egypt (Egyptian-American) has one Nobel Laureate in chemistry in the person of Dr. Ahmed Zewail)?
Which kinds of societies produced Apartheid, "slavery," Nazism, eugenics, weapons of mass destruction, etc? Who were behind the two World Wars and are behind most of the wars today?
Are America and the West not the largest supporter of dictators around the world? Aren’t communism, socialism, fascism, capitalism, and the like, all Western? Where do you think firing squad, coup d’etat, etc., come from? The Spanish Inquisition?
Please get Noam Chomsky’s (part of his more than books for extensive declassified data on dictators America has brought to power and/or supported throughout the world). Get Andrew Rice’s book “THE TEETH MAY SMILE BUT THE HEART DOES NOT FORGET: MURDER AND MEMORY IN UGANDA” for info on how America, Britain, and Israel brought Idi Amin to power!
Who gave Saddam Hussein, Augusto Pinochet, Idi Amin, Mobuto Sese Seko, Chief Mangosutho Buthelezi, and most of the dictators in the Latin American/Caribbean world? I wish I have time to discuss in detail where the sources of most of the ideas we rely on today have come from (we should do this another time).
America gave Saddam Hussein intelligence to gas Kurds and Iranians to death. Democracies like American and Israel helped Apartheid South Africa build her nuclear stockpile (to strengthen the White Nationalist Party in exchange for South Africa giving America and Israel uranium, etc., for their one atomic/nuclear arsenals; Mobuto helped America get uranium around the same time too). Didn’t you read declassified info on this? The West has produced most of the worst ideas in the past 500 years!
Kwadwo, please go back to the history of man in the past 7000 years and tell me where most of the foundations of "modern thought" have come from (take a look at Egypt (across Africa), China, Babylon, India, Aztecs-Mayan, Rome, Libya, Greece (Crete, etc)! We can start from here (www.ted.com/talks/ron_eglash_on_african_fractals?language=en; see where the idea of modern computer comes from; you should do well to read Dr. Ron Eglash book and scientific papers on African Fractals). Tell me what you find as you research into man’s history (knowledge and ideas) in the past 7000 years.
I have given tons of authoritative archeological, historical (historiographical), paleontological, linguistic, anthropological, etc., references to the sources of human knowledge. You can send me an email (franciskkwarteng@yahoo.com) and we can discuss this question in detail.

Kwadwo,
Good morning from my end. How are you?
I went to bed after responding to your questions, and woke up this morning to read your next question.
Your question about Putin is a dicey one, I should say. I shall, however, attempt a brief answer, though that may not all be all you want.
First, you will have to know more about George Kennan, an American political scientist and foreign policy strategist who contributed immensely to the political and moral theories around the concept of "Cold War."
Second, George Kennan argued that for America's strategic interests, power, and leader's intentions to have America's presence felt around the globe (combat the threat of communism, etc), America must have her feet in all areas where her interests faced major threats from potential enemies.
Third, which is why America invested so much in Japan (Japan was a regional power in Asia and for that matter investing in Japan, which was not communist, could put her against Russia (USSR), China, etc)) in Asia. It is why America supported the establishment of Israel in the so-called Middle East to against Arabs (note: oil, etc) and Arab dislike of Western presence in the Middle East.
Fourth, we have to look at the geopolitical closeness of Ukraine to Russia (please check a map). Let also not forget that the Ukraine became the “THIRD LARGEST NUCLEAR WEAPONS STOCKPILE IN THE WORLD AFTER THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION AND THE UNITED STATES” (see the link: www.nti.org/country-profiles/ukraine/nuclear/).
Fifth, America (and the rest of the West) is interested in Ukraine for this very reason. Russia thinks if the West should finally succeed in bringing Ukraine into its fold, then Ukraine can be used to reduce Russia's regional power (and influence in the world). We should remember that Russia's support for America's enemies (Syria, Iran, Venezuela, and other countries around the world) irks the West.
Sixth, no country will sit idly by and watch its neighbor used against her. Let me give you another good example. When the Americans secretly hid nuclear warheads in Turkey during the Cold War, directing the warheads against the former USSR, what did the latter do? The USSR responded by having a similar arrangement with Cuba?
Then the Americans got mad with Cuba and the USSR for directing a set of nuclear warheads against America though the Americans started it (You can read more about this: Check the so-called “CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS” and the papers of both John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev; Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. treats this question in a more scholarly manner in his voluminous text “A THOUSAND DAYS: JOHN F. KENNEDY IN THE WHITE HOUSE”)!
Kwadwo, let me put two hypothetical questions to you: What do you think America will do if Russia or China tries to manipulate Canada or Mexico against America's strategic interest in the Western Hemisphere? Do you think America will sit unconcerned? Kwadwo, have you heard America go to any part of the world and impose her refrain “this is my strategic interest" (as if no other country on the planet has strategic interests)?
America's EXCEPTIONALISM has been used to justify her strategic interests in clear violation of international laws! America's strategic interests have been used to overthrow one leader after another, support one dictator after another, led to international wars, etc!
I don’t hate America or the West, I should add, Kwadwo, because I am interested in the facts. I have criticized Ghana and Africa where they go wrong. I put there this caveat to forestall any misunderstanding of my criticism of the West.
Finally, I love Barzun as well and I recall us discussing him briefly when you mentioned his book “Simple and direct” in reference to my writing style. Give me your take on what I have said so far. I hope you are enjoying your weekend!
All errors are mine.
I await your answers!

You are correct that Putin deems Ukraine as falling under Russia's sphere of influence hence his justification for meddling in the affairs of Ukraine. I only used example to illustrate my point that interventionism was not reserved for the West only. There is doubt that if America deems its national interest threatened,it will enact policies to beat back that perceived threat. That was happened to Cuba, Nicaragua, Chile, and your boy Nkrumah. The Soviets did same in Eastern Europe.
My problem with Nkrumah is that with his exposure in the US, should have better that America was not going allow him to institute his leftist policies and that was overthrown. You know how I feel about his ouster and I am not going to rub it in.
Incidentally I met your uncle Commander George Yaw Boakye in 1977 at the Accra Sports Stadium during Ghana Academicals track meet with Togo. I came first in my invent and he was the official who presented me with a medal. He also gave me 20 cedis from own pocket as a gift. He and General Bob Kotei
were at that event and both were sports enthusiasts. He was handsome, and very distinguished. I still do not understand why Rawlings and his posse executed them. May they all rest in piece. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Keep your pieces coming.

Dear Kwadwo,
I agree with you.
But you will also agree with me that the Soviet annexation of those countries that later became part of the general body of the USSR, took that precedent of hegemony and colonization from the West, particularly what eventually became the United States (as well as colonization).
In other words, the Soviet took the American example from the THIRTEEN COLONIES to the United States. The Soviets wanted to build a nation-state, an empire if you will, as large and powerful as the United States.
That constitutes the source of the Soviet politics of annexation. In fact, several scholars and historians have come out with irresistible evidence showing that Abraham Lincoln's real motive for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation was not the "freedom" of slaves per se, but rather for preventing the American South from breaking away from the Union and, in a sense, building an empire to rival Great Britain's.
You might also agree that Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels never had as part of their theories notions about forcible annexation of countries as the Soviet did. Remember Lenin’s central idea focused on sacking the Czar and modernizing Russian society. The politics of annexation came later.
You also have to go all the way back to the Industrial Revolution, the social problems it occasioned, and why Marx and Engels formulated their theories (to counter the debilitating excesses of capitalism/Industrial Revolution, and to improve the human condition as well as to minimize the exploitation of workers, especially children, women, and the poor, etc).
Part of the reasons for the Russian politics of annexation (and rivalry against America and the rest of the world) goes all the way back to Marx, Engels, the Industrial Revolution, birth and development of capitalism, etc.
In fact, the Soviets picked up the idea of annexation from chains of precedents set largely by the West. This was why I gave you a list of books for you to take a look at. Even Nazism, a Western idea, borrowed heavily from America.
The architects of Apartheid build their ideas on Nazism and American racism (Jim Crowism, etc). Take a look at the list I have given you and you will get to understand why Western behavior in the last 500 years explain contemporary realities!
I can assure you that my father, a former soldier, and his elder brother, also a former soldier, had never gotten over Bookie’s death. I have my own take on this matter. My father joined the military and was stationed in Tarkoradi (Pay Office).
My father first met Rawlings in Tarkoradi where the latter (and others) came for their paychecks. My father was later transferred to MATS (Military Academy Training Schools).
I and my siblings grew up there in military Barracks and also attended "military school" (built for wards of the military; other kids from the larger public also attended this school). This school was a walking distance from where my uncle and others faced the firing squad. But that is a topic for another! Like I said, I have my own take on this matter!
Finally, no one could fault Nkrumah for his leftist ideas. Hadn’t Democrats “always” been left-leaning? Was Kennedy not “leftist”? Hasn’t the American leadership, both left and right, supported left-leaning regimes around the world? Did you get to take a look at Andrew Rice’s book “THE TEETH MAY SMILE WITH YOU BUT THE HEART DOES NOT FORGET: MURDER AND MEMORY IN UGANDA”?
As I said before, this book gives you info on how Israel (America, Britain) brought Idi Amin to power. It also gives you declassified info on Richard Nixon’s and Henry Kissinger’s denunciation and dislike of Nkrumah’s leftist politics, even while Nixon and Kissinger accommodated Communist China!
Didn’t Woodrow Wilson and Winston Churchill work with the leftist Joseph Stalin to get rid of Hitler? Kwadwo, do you have any idea how many leftist governments America has collaborated with? Investigate this question!
You get what I am saying? Read the book “Untold History of the United States” (Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick, watch the documentary film if you prefer it to the book; the book has a lot of info on declassified matter). Read also Jared Diamond’s “Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies” (you can also watch the documentary film).
The sources I give you explore in detail all the questions you ask me. I tend to give your references because I don’t like oversimplifying complex subjects with easy answers.
In sum, interventionism has always been a tool of “mostly” the West in the past 500 years, setting the precedent for others to follow. Interventionism in modern politics is a primarily Western idea!
Go over the history of the world since the formation of the USSR and compare the latter’s use of interventionism with the West. Then tell me which of these two is guiltier!
Remember that Saddam Hussein cited America’s annexation politics (I hope you have heard of “MANIFEST DESTINY”) to support his annexation of Kuwait (which was historically the 19th province of Iraq) and what happened? Do you recall Operation Desert Storm?
You know part of the reasons Saddam Hussein did this even after the United States had given him intelligence to gas Kurds and Iranians? He later found out America was selling arms to both Iraq and Iran during the 8-year war! This sad and shameful history is not far from CIA-CONTRA AFFAIR.
You should read Frederick Forsyth’s novel “THE FIST OF GOD.” This book though fiction gives you declassified info on all the major Western countries, name by name, that build Saddam’s underground bunkers, weapons of mass destruction, and what “banned” chemical each country contributed to Saddam stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. You can also search for Saddam’s picture with Ronald Rumsfeld in Iraq!
Kwadwo, let me end here. This is a topic I am well versed in and if I don’t stop, I will not finish. Yo can always send me an email if you are willing to do so for indepth discussion. We can deeper than this if time allows!
Please overlook my errors.
I never proofread it!
Have a great weekend.

But I always believed Nkrumah could have toned down his rhetoric and avoided the wrath of the US. In my opinion, he stuck his neck too much in the Cold War and got bitten. You and know from our professional experience that sometimes you have to play the game to survive and that was what Gbedema did following the Howard Johnson incident. That got us the Akosombo. Calling a benefactor on such a flagship project as imperialist or neocolonialist , didn't help his course. He should have known better and that was tragic. There is no doubt that Nkrumah was a great leader, but failed to realize the consequences of some of his policies and utterances.

Dear Kwadwo,
I remember Major Okyere well (I never knew him personally, though).
I recall reading somewhere that Major Okyere once slapped Rawlings after the latter's abortive coup! And the enmity between the two started from that incidence?
That aside, Gbedemah himself was spirited away from Ghana to Togo (I think) with the aid of the CIA, where he, Busia, and others (and their Western counterparts) planned Nkrumah’s overthrow. He went to the CIA with unsubstantiated lies after Nkrumah’s government had relieved him of his post.
Gbedemah simply could not stand Nkrumah’s censure of him when it came out that he [Gbedemah] was using state money to enrich himself. That was when he turned against Nkrumah.
There was onetime the CIA did not trust him [Gbedemah] nor his ability to overthrow Nkrumah. He even went to his Western sponsors for money with promises of overthrowing Nkrumah. They eventually ignored him when they realized he was not up to his promises/task.
Mahoney recalls these events in his book "JFK Ordeal in Africa." Mahoney provides useful information on Gbedemah and his little-known connections to the CIA and the State Department and their plots together to overthrow Nkrumah.
Thanks for your response.
