The question which is never asked is why it is things are the way they are in Ghana. Why is it that our professionals in all spheres are not up to it, why quality standards in the professions are so low? Why there is so much corruption? We simply state what we already know. A serious debate is required on why we cannot and do not progress? Why why why

Hulloo!! At long last an educated african has given me cause to smile. Oh it is just a spark of tiny light but it is reason enough for me to smile. Sir, I can guess that we are not educated to help advance anything. It is simply to get a good job that is to get a good salary and live comfortably. No desire to help solve any problem and the same ally to our leaders in every sphere of our national life. We want respect from others? Oh please it will have to be earned and am afraid we have not earned and therefore don't deserve it!!! I read somewhere that if your goal is only to live comfortably and breed you are not living any higher than an animal.
I truly wish we as a race will come to that recognition and begin to live as human beings. Please no pun intended.

In the ancient times, very few people were educated in Babylon,Egypt and China. The Greeks and Romans learned from the ancient scolars and developed advanced theories and principles. From the time of Plato and Aristotle, science has become the ultimate desire of every enlightened human being.Today,it is not the only few rich and influential families who get access to education but everybody has the right and opportunity to become a scholar. There is a big difference between education and a scholar.I think what we are missing in Ghana and Africa in general is that we don't have committed scientific scholars who will die for their convictions like Galileo and Einstien did in the past.Science is not only about invention but conception and theories as well.I think we don't teach science properly in Africa because we don't see Technology as an essential ingredient in Science studies.Science begins with Mathematics. When we begin to give importance to Mathematics, our approach to nature will be analytical and empirical.Today in Ghana, everybody has become a politician, there is no Scientist in the country who has carried the crusade to make the noble subject attractive and impact positively on the people. All what we hear on the airwaves is NDC/NPP warfare,we have neglected Science and Technology to the background.May the Good God bless you Dr Sarfo for engaging in the Scientific crusade.I started writing about Science and Technology in 1983,some were published in the New African Magazine but with my limited educational backgroung I could not go further.I have never been to any secondary school but I have insatiable desire for Physics and Astronomy.Thank you once more for the enlightment.

I have said it time and time again!!!!! Our education system does NOT WORK! And will NOT WORK!!! If we...................
It's about time we rethink our entire education system in our country and more importantly on our continent - AFRICA!!!
Why do we continue with this brainwash education system which has kept us in the doldrums for years………. All we do is to teach our children in someone else’s ‘lingo’ and expect to be like them???
Unfortunately, our understanding of ‘Education’ is all about perfecting other peoples ‘powerful tools’ (language) based on collecting knowledge without the basic understanding of its origins and values.
It is basically all about aping other humans’ lifestyle, totally contrary to our cultural heritage and good traditional beliefs.
Our so-called ‘Education’ system is deeply-rooted in the concept of reading books (in someone else’s languages and of their experiences totally alien to ours), memorizing them again, again and again, regurgitating them out of the ‘memory box’ (that is, if one has one) unto exam papers, get so-called good grades and eventually attain a degree/masters and forget everything after the process.
Another sequence for this kind of education system is called – ‘chew’, ‘pour’, ‘pass’ and ‘forget’ – which gives no room for any form of analytical thinking that stimulates the COMMON SENSE (the gift from GOD), bestowed upon every human being.
I would honestly like to seek answers to the following: What were Africans educating themselves in, in the past before English or the French languages?
Which African language did all the scholars from all walks of life (from and beyond our continent), who achieved greatness from the first university in the world, located in Timbuktu – Mali were educated in?
Why was there an explosion of African Civilization which stretched from the North and South of the Great Nile River before the English language?
Why don’t we look to our past achievements to shape and secure our future as a continent, just as any other nations have done?
Why the choice of a language IMPOSED on us by the colonialists - who had enslaved us and suppressed the minds of our people?
Why the choice of a language, wholly alien to our African cultural heritage, good traditions and values?
Why not an AFRICAN LANGUAGE to educate ourselves to carve up a future and a proud identity for us and OUR unborn generations?
What have we Africans achieved……… since embarking on educating ourselves in suppressive languages that has bred inferiority complex towards the colonialists and other foreigners?
I guess others may argue that, we should not re-invent the wheel that has already been created for us……….and my question is, have we ever made good use of that created wheel? If not,……then why????????????
Please, please, please let's challenge our minds and reach a better way forward because history, if it’s anything to go by tells us that we are barking the wrong tree…….in the hope of being like the people we can never be…….just by aping around like them and speaking their ‘lingo’?
These same people we are trying to be like, became who they are by the use of THEIR OWN ‘lingos’, correcting THEIR OWN mistakes and experiences within the confines of THEIR OWN environments and for the GOOD of THEIR OWN nations, by applying the basic principles bestowed upon us by The Almighty! DON’T WE GET IT????
That is why in Ghana and Africa on the whole, we have doctors, engineers, scientists aping around like other people but, with NOTHING to show for, at the end of it all……We have lost the plot! If education was all about speaking other people’s ‘lingo’ then, why do we bring the Chinese – who speak no word of English to Ghana, to construct our roads etc.
GOD BLESS GHANA! AFRICAN FOREVER!

Boy Kofi or whatever you call yourself.....I honestly don't think you managed to grasp what I was arriving at. You are a true justification that language is a barrier in acquiring knowledge....that's why you could not grasp the reasoning behind my argument.
You naively concluded that..."Therefore,language is not the barrier of knowledge but the orientation should be well defined and practical."
You have actually re-inforced my argument of having the likes of you being educated in someone else's 'lingo'.
I did not say language was a barrier of knowledge, my dear boy.
Please take your time and read my response again and translate it via your 'thinking-cap' in your own God-given 'lingo', which would define your orientation......then I believe you will understand me, before you embark on any practicals.
I hope you get my drift.
GOD BLESS GHANA!

I READ ELSEWHERE THAT THE LECTURERS IN GHANA WENT ON STRIKE TO DEMAND RESEARCH PAYMENTS DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY DID NOT PUBLISH ANYTHING TO QUALIFY BEING PAID ANY RESEARCH MONEY. IF ANY WORKER WOULD BE PAID FOR NOT SHOWING WHAT HE OR SHE HAD BEEN DOING, ONE WOULD SEE WHY ONE WOULD READ WHAT THE LAWYER IS COMPLAINING ABOUT. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN IS THAT OUR POLITICIANS ARE MOSTLY LAWYERS AND THEIR MISCONCEPTION OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS AS BEING THE HALLMARK OF DEVELOPMENT, AFRICA WILL NOT DEVELOP TO ITS POTENTIAL. YOU ARE A LAWYER AND MOST POLITICIANS ARE FROM YOUR FRATERNITY, AS SUCH, YOU MUST PUT PART OF THE BLAME ON THEM. LAW IS THE LEAST OF PROFESSIONS ON DEVELOPMENT. LAWYERS SIT IN THEIR OFFICES AND THINK OF THEMSELVES AS IMPORTANT AND THE WORLD EVOLVES AROUND THEM. UNTIL LAWYERS WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT DEVELOPMENT AND ADVANCEMENT OF ANY COUNTRY DEPEND ON ITS TECHNOCRATS AND SCIENTISTS, AFRICA WILL BE LACKING AND DISEASES WILL BE RAMPANT. IT WAS SAID AIDS STARTED IN AFRICA AND NOW EBOLA. DR. NKRUMAH TRIED AND BUILT SOME FACTORIES SO THAT GHANA FOR THAT MATTER WOULD PRODUCE SOMETHING ON HER OWN. THEY STARTED PLOTTING TO KILL HIM WITH THE ACCUSATIONS OF BEING A SOCIALIST AND USING COMMUNIST IDEOLOGY. WHO OWES TRILLION DOLLARS TO CHINA? AFRICA HAS RESOURCES YET OUR SITUATIONS ARE PRECARIOUS AS EVER. LOOK AT MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE. ONE WOULD SAY WE STARTED AT THE SAME TIME AND ASK WHAT HAPPENED THAT GHANA IS LACKING BEHIND. IT IS JEALOUSY AND GREED. THERE ARE AFRICAN SCIENTISTS DOING JUST WELL IN THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES BUT I WOULD BET MY PENNY THAT IF THEY WERE TO COME TO GHANA WITH ANY SUGGESTION TO IMPROVE THE LOT IN GHANA, THE LAWYERS WITH THEIR BOGUS WIGS WILL LOOK DOWN ON HIM BECAUSE THEY PRODUCE NOTHING YET THEY GET TAX MONIES TO STEAL AND SPEND AND DO NOT CARE TOO HOOTS AS LONG AS THEY GET THEIR SHARE OF THE LOOT. LAWYERS ARE ANTI DEVELOPMENT OF ANY COUNTRY. THEY JUST CREAT ALL THE PROBLEMS OF ANY COUNTRY. JUST LOOK AT GHANA FROM DAY ONE OF INDEPENDENCE AND THAT TELLS YOU SOMETHING ABOUT THEM. SO, DOCTOR OF JURISPRUDENCE, THE BALL IS IN YOUR COURT. BLAME YOUR COLLEAGUES AS THE CAUSE OF ALL OUR PROBLEMS. THE SCIENTISTS WILL DO THEIR LOT ONLY IF THE LAWYERS WILL APPRECIATE THEIR INTENTIONS AND WHAT THEY THE SCIENTISTS WANT TO ACHIEVE. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH TAKES TIME AND MONEY TO SHOW RESULTS AND YOUR COLLEAGUES DO NOT SEE IT THAT WAY. UNLESS AND UNTIL LAWYERS UNDERSTAND WHAT ENGINEERS AND TECHNOLOGISTS ARE UP TO, AFRICA AND FOR THAT MATTER GHANA WILL REMAIN IN THE DOLDRUMS.

Doc, our people here in Ghana hence Africa are not convinced a bit about the importance of science, let alone to engage in that sort of thinking. We believe in some useless, ignorance and superstition filled Jewish story book called bible, that, majority believed as rather an encyclopaedia of wisdom and practical knowledge, so would never see the need for science.
And what is worst? Our leading educated ones, especially in the areas of science itself are themselves not helping matters.
