Dr Adjei, you have made a good argument, however your writing left some room for you to answer some questions. You never assigned reasons for your quitting the science discipline and venturing into your new career. Was science too difficult for you or you did quit for the same reasons why other people who used to study science also quit.
I agree with some of the points you made but I must say that the reason for the initially high, patronage of science but future diversions may solely be due to economic reasons. But I think most of our the tutors in Ghana do not have any knowledge in scientific thinking, hence their inability to passionately inculcate this scientific thinking into students. The other reason is also due to the fact that people who study the pure science in the university have had problems with access to the necessary tools needed for research and knowledge advancement, hence most trained Ghana trained Master and PhD students lack in depth knowledge in the subject matter as well as critical scientific thinking.
There is a greater need for an overhaul of the way science is taught in our schools and universities as well as intensive investment into this area if Ghana is to make any breakthrough in this area.

I whole-heartedly agree with you that "There is a greater need for an overhaul of the way science is taught in our schools and universities ", especially, now in the 21st century; that is why some of us are advocating for STEMIC teaching from primary to tertiary institutions.
STEMIC stands for:
S - Science
T- Technology
E- Engineering
M - Mathematics
I - Innovations
C - Communications
And from kindergarten to our universities, we must make the teaching of STEMIC fun but challenging, tailored to meet our needs.

The Almighty wants us to utilize Science,i.e. use scientific knowledge to challenge us to discover and appreciate the immensity of His/Her greatness - from the microscopic level to the infinite macroscopic level.
At the microscopic level, our lack of understanding at this level is preventing us from dealing with malaria and Ebola, for example.
And at the macroscopic level, we can discover and appreciate the hugeness of the universe and the billions of galaxies in it, not to understand the complex processes that drive the galactic phenomenon.
Let's not limit ourselves, Prophetess Oforiwaa.

Dr. SAS, I'm happy for these wonderful 'confessions', not just observations.
University of Ghana has professors in all these sciences you mentioned. KNUST was established purposely to apply scientific knowledge to solve our problems. How are the lecturers getting promoted to professorship?
They simply conduct researches whose findings have no use at all or even if the the findings are useful, but not to us.
Do you appreciate why the book and research allowances being given to our lecturers must be cancelled and replaced by the national research fund accessible to all including me at my SHS?
Thank you for the wonderful write-up anyway.

If we follow the logical extension of your reasoning, then science studies in Ghana must also be cancelled for being useless.... You inadvertently imply that all useless endeavors in Ghana must be cancelled. Research allowances in Ghana is useless. Therefore research allowances must be cancelled. This same syllogism could also apply to the study of science in Ghana, noting that you have not disputed the fact that it has so far been useless...
But the thrust of my argument is a mere request for a de minimus contribution of our science students and scholars....to lead in the quest for scientific reasoning and logical analyses amongst the people.
It appears to me that many readers are missing my point here: they somehow agree that science studies have contributed nothing to our society, but assign the usual reasons for the failure of the scientists to live up to expectation, leaving the core issue of lack of basic logical reasoning among our scientists unaddressed. Scientific thinking must be the basic outcome of every science studies. But it is my contention that the nexus plexus of our woes is lack of scientific/logical reasoning amongst our people, and the failure of our scientists consists in the fact that they themselves don't know how to reason well, and can therefore not impart scientific thinking to the generality of the people.
In other words, our investments in the sciences have not yielded even the elementary benefit to the people, and have remained useless even if viewed from the lowest standards of the function of the sciences. Hence my call on science students and scholars to begin thinking scientifically and to influence the culture of logical reasoning amongst the citizenry.

If there were other criteria(eg, impart of one's research on society) for getting promotion, our scientists (principally located at the universities)would not having been doing their cut-and-paste research.
The question remains as to when our scientists will begin to impart the much-needed critical reasoning in our students. Their generational failure (as you rightly pointed out)is just one of the reasons why they must provide evidence of the their research to be given funds.

We are building even more Universities...but for what? How are we using these institutions for the advancement of our country? Is it just jobs for academics with no accountability? The countries leaders go abroad with tax payers money for even the most basic of medical care, after having spent billions on medical training at home. Now we want to import Punjabis to farm for us...its ridiculous. Is the refuge in religion because of severe depression, laziness, lack of empowerment, escapism, or, as has been said, juice for the poor? I have tried to assist Ghanaian failing students abroad, and more often than not, I will find out that they spend more time being up all night, especially Friday/Sunday praying and chanting...then they are too tired to do their academic work...habits they formed when they were back home. As you said, they are all praying for some power to descend from "heaven" to solve all problems....its crazy. and getting worse.

By the way I think exactly like you do, and until we form a secret society, that would undermine and eventually uproot the evil we the few see in our Ghanaian society, we can't distinguish ourselves from them.
Indeed as typical Ghanaians (Africans), we have lazy minds but like to toil for our daily bread, thinking that to toil translates to hard work. Maybe about a 1000 of us out of 25 million have genetic disorders so we love to think and regard religion as a secondary function of human nature, while the rest are normal lazy beings, relying on religion and lawlessness for their entire existence. Money and brains are the most powerful tools of life. Perhaps if we can raise our own private large capital, we can change Ghana and Africa. If not in our lifetimes, lets grant the opportunity to a few abnormal Ghanaians like us. I will write to you soon, stay blessed by the power of science and technology!!!

Are you a narcissist? Why do you praise yourself? Wisdom begins with humility. Know that the scientific tradition of trying to logically prove everything is not anti-God but rather a complement to the extreme of being gullible and not questioning anything, hence the fact-value dichotomy. The ancients like Aristotle, Pythagoras, Socrates, Thales of Miletus, Anaximander, Plato, Chaucer, Francis Bacon, Tycho Braha, Galileo, Kepler, Copernicus, Descartes etc all believed in the supreme God yet they examined nature to discover his laws of creation through logic, observation, experiments repeated and replicated in time and space. Do not worry your head unnecessarily about lack of inventions or application of science in Ghana because the right time will come because necessity is the mother of invention. Haven't Ghanaians outside at NASA and other places proved themselves/ Talk of Dr Thomas Mensah of fibre optic fame, Ave Kludze, Isaiah Blankson, Trebi Ashitey Ollennu, Prof Allotey, Dr MacBagbonluri etc. I perceive you are too young and inexperienced despite your acquisition of a doctorate degree. Some of us have not got one but still we can engage in some serious discourse and critique. Enjoy your day.

2.He established the Ghana Academy of Sciences.

If you put me at 13 years when Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966, it will mean that I was twenty-three years when I began secondary school in 1979. I was actually fifteen years when I entered secondary school in 1979. So now compute my age today and how old I was when Nkrumah was overthrown. But ask yourself first whether your senility enables you to join in this complex discourse here and the computation required now.
Begin by listing the elements that make a person a dictator, and see whether Nkrumah falls into the characterization, and conclude whether one is a hater for stating the obvious. Also consider the wisdom in your implied notion that one must be alive to appreciate history. Bro. Francis Kwarteng was not born when Nkrumah was overthrown, but you cannot question his knowledge of every subject on Nkrumah.
What has the wisdom of Solomon got to do with the age of Methuselah? You are a typical example of a person who lacks scientific reasoning!

I am working with a scientific research centre in Ghana. Even with the limited funds, the centre wastes so much that no 'sensible govt' will dole monies to them again. Same apply to ALL labs in Ghana.
Remember that the ministers or those in govt are often themselves researchers. Knowing what they were doing there or what is being done there, these ministers are fully aware that increasing funding to the researchers is just another way of giving out money for no work.
Our scientists can still prove their case if they really have any info.

Thinking scientifically as a nation is not due to the failure of science students or scholars but is due to our entrenched traditional practices that we were brought up with by our forefathers. Ghanaian scientist will also be unproductive until there is a massive investment into the field in terms of equipment and infrastructure by the government. A typical example is where we have virologists and clinical biochemists in University of Ghana but they cannot research into a disease like ebola bcos it requires biosafety level four whilst our labs and equipments can only handle biosafety level two organisms.

Recently, when the Ebola virus struck, Ghanaian doctors openly and shamelesly declared that they would run away should a suspected Ebola case be brought to their hospital. This is an example of the helplessness and uselessness of our science scholars in the face of real challenges requiring their skills and expertise.
Meanwhile, we question why the US authorities did not furnish our Ebola patients with ZMapp, the experimental medication for Ebola only tried in rhesus monkeys. This is as if we have a certain entitlement to their scientific discoveries while we relinquish any research responsibilities of our own. Meanwhile, if the Americans had first tried the drug on Africans, there would have been an outcry that they were using us as guinea pigs for their experimentation. That is the extent of our ingratitude.
We are running away from our responsibilities while making demands on others to save us, only to turn around and accuse them of some sinister motives. What is the purpose of training doctors if they are only to deal with commonplace diseases and run away from the dangerously sick? Another example of the dearth of scientific thinking within our society for which the goons are ready with their silly excuses.
