If you think you know too much and that there is nothing beyond your explanation, I will tell you that your are living in a fools paradise. Spirits, be it good or evil are real and if you mess with them, they can harm you real bad.
I do not know where you live but here in the US, there are some rise buildings with no "13th floors". Do you have any explanation to that.

You think this writer is living in a fools paradise" Really? Americans can dabble in whatever belief systems they want. They have enough well-meaning and thoughtful people believing in science to help develop their country. American "worship" their dollar. Have you asked yourself why the countries/societies that seem to be overtly
superstitious are the least developed?
I don't question what other people believe in. In my opinion, religion in most of its manifestations in Ghana has done and is still doing us more harm than good. Let's separate our religious beliefs, which I think should be between each individual and his or her God, and national development which should be secular in approach.

Ghana is a secular state, and if our state funded schools are turning classrooms into christian prayer camps then that should be a cause for worry. Science has transformed the planet that we live on so, why should I be against science? My point is we should not blame our "under development on religion". Superstition is everywhere and there are cases that science cannot explain. The problems facing us are man made. We vote for people who are clueless about governance.
Have you seen any nation where the rule of law is not applicable yet developed? That is the problems facing Ghana and most African nations. What does the US constitution says about the laws in the US? It says "No one is above the law" meaning what? No one can get away with doing the wrong thing. What about us? Some people are above the law and can trample on it and walk free. How do you expect a nation like that to develop? Superstition has nothing to do with that.

My understanding is that the writer is not blaming superstition/religion solely for our underdevelopment. He was merely stately an objective fact that religion/superstition, especially how it is used in our dear nation has not helped our developmental endearvors. And in that I couldn't agree with him more.
Lack of adherence to the rule of law and general disobedience and indiscipline have their role in our underdevelopment as well. For now let's stick to what the article tries to address - the role of religion/superstition in our developmental efforts.

Ayigbe JJ is the worst thing that has happened to Ghana and we know for a fact that historians who are not under the influence of his brainwash propaganda or children of the future will very rightly confirm so . i am hoping God will keep him alive so we can prosecute him in court or at the Hague , As long as he has any influence in Ghana's politics the country can never prosper , its as if Russia still had Stalin or Germany Hitler , people who have committed crimes against humanity are often the very same who promote a perverted propaganda machinery like we see today in Ghana . Criminals like PV are being celebrated but don't realize this man helped set up a dictation that cased the suffering of millions and the exodus of the finest brains of the land ,persecution of the Akans . This is the govt that sets impostors and fakes to rule the majority . We have the Ahvois and Hannah Tetteh who are not Fantis masquerading as such , PV for years made it appear he was Ashanti especially through the Kotoko fb club but he was Guan , many Ewes disguise themselves as Akans so they can coining their phrase ' penetrate and infiltrate' Akan lands . The legacy of JJ is hate everything Akan and deny them real self rule . JJ in any country or normal democracy would be considered a non desirable criminal except cult personality criminally minded north Korea and Qaddafi's Libya . Any nation that allowed minorities to rule and control like Hitler the Austrian ,or Stalin the Georgian have always suffered tragedies that take decades to recover from . we are tired of the reckless willfulness of these leaders from minority tribal groups who only come with corruption in their hearts and hatred of the values and potential of the majority . this mafia political oligarchy that has a stranglehold on our people needs to be removed by force and if it takes a war to do it so be it

There are so many buildings in New York city with no 13 floors. Superstition or religion has nothing to do with our underdevelopment. To see Ghana moving on, we should allow the laws of the land to crack its whip without any fear or favor.

Must we all become superstitious because some Americans are superstitious, or some great scientist also maintained a scintilla of his superstition? If we establish that some buildings do not have thirteenth floor, it simply shows that some builders may be superstitious. It does not prove that we must also kowtow to their superstition.
I have always argued that there is a traceable relationship within Nkrumahism, bigotry, superstition, linguistic incompetence and outright idiocy. You always prove me right.

I single-handedly led the fight in cyber-space in the '90s for Rational and Secular orders in Ghana. No one has as yet equaled the amount of time I devoted to that cause and material I posted.
Anyway, let me congratulate Samuel for coming out to the wider cyberspace with the Humanist message. That was exactly what I told your Webmaster a while ago when I sent the article on Noah and the Flood Myth for publication, besides offering material support. Your piece reminds me that I must edit the continuation for publication on the site.
Btw, you failed to give your web site, which I am pasting below.

I´m overwhelmed and excited to know that I´m not alone.
My opinion is Ghanaians and Africans in general spent or better say waste hours and hours and fortunes going about their religious matters instead of taking realistic actions to solve their daily problems like done in develop countries! Religion and faith is a personal thing and is not there to solve problems and surely Manna will NEVER fall from heaven. Only true hard work, determination will lead us to our goal. So I agree with This:
"People must be awakened to science and technology to save Ghana" from a despair economy, rather than basing our trust in fables to solve our problems!.
Where can I join the Humanist Association of Ghana (HAG)?
It is my longtime desire to find like-minded people in Ghana and find ways to influence the youth for a better future and generation that will see science, technology and human dialogue as solution to problem facing Africa than seeking solutions through religion, magic, hocus-pocus or wasting weekends at prayer camps instead of cleaning their environment to enhance hygiene and ways to fight Malaria for example.
In the develop countries they spent less hours in Church or Mosques than we do but are doing better and God is not purnishing them. Loool! Open your eyes!

A very good article that gives hope to many of us......
Most religious people are Nkrumahists, bigots, failed academics, idiots and criminals. But it is simplistic to suppose that people are going to let go their religious fervor (or fever) on account of some abstract campaigning. Rather, ways should be found to focus religious teachings on humanist conduct, philosophical concepts and logical reasoning. Most religious thoughts also assert a branch of deep philosophical reflections, proper behavior and logical conduct which have hitherto been neglected. Thus, in places where structured religious teachings are required, such as in our schools or at some workplaces, the teachings should be based on very high levels of philosophical exposition, humanist conduct and logical reasoning with room for questions, analyses and discussions.
In the end, the Nkrumahists may not be saved (they are irredeemably steeped in their worship of Osagyefo) but many others will and should.

Dr SAS, I admire your comments and I do share your views on this. Our beliefs are personal but I still don't get it why in Ghana every mishap, accident has a spiritual link. Our ability to think and approach our everyday endeavours are inextricably linked with spirituality. Just recently a leading member of the ruling govt suggested that spirits and dwarfs are the cause(s) of the depreciating cedi. And if such beliefs become accepted and entrenched in our secondary schools then we have a problem as a nation. I am a christian but I separate my beliefs from my work as well as most of the things I do in life.I will not spend my valuable time in an all night prayer meeting, never. But how do you, Dr SAS, link this debate with Nkrumahism. I am a post-Nkrumah Ghanaian so I am trying to see the link here. Was Nkruma superstitious? Just asking.

Nkrumahism is a form of cultic worship that is at the cornerstone of our belief system in Ghana. Note that those who will genuflect before their fellow humans without question will genuflect before anybody or anything without question. Nkrumah established a system of obedience without analyses and trained a whole generation of ardent genuflectors who will never be able to think. The results of all his is that we have become a nation of superstitious worshippers, and not critical thinkers.
Remember that those criticizing me here are not interested in discourse. They want to insult me for insulting their God Nkrumah.
