How does Rawlings merely stating that he had a tape of the gruesome murder of Ya-Na constitutes knocking the heads of Ewes and Northerners against Akans? Did the enmity between Ewes and a section of Akans (just a section, not all Akans) start with Rawlings? Is this NPP Professor Ocquaye so demented to realize that Rawlings was nowhere when Victor Owusu insulted the Ewes for being inward looking? Mr. Boateng,
NPP doesn't practice tribal politics. Some people within the NPP (both supporters and managers) spew hatred and this rubbish. Don't paint with such a broad brush.
In the same way, NDC uses this "tribal divide" to incite passions and gain support. Its all politics preying on some of the most sensitive and explosive issues of our time. We all need to check it at the door to ensure that this great country survives our great great great grand children and beyond. Pitching one side against the other is simply not going to help whether you find this nauseating or not.
The truth is neither the NPP or the NDC are perfect. And that the NDC has been in power longer than the NPP and still under performed. Let's focus on facts and competence (and corruption, which affects both sides, and leave tribal politics out of this). There are smart Ewes, Northerners and Akans just as all these three tribes have their various village (and city) idiots.

My series setting straight some historical records has been ready before the recent General Elections, and so I think it was long overdue to publish them. But for now, I'd like to point out some major inaccuracies in Dzidza's post. I have posted enough to show why that so-called Prof is simply a Ga yaka gbomo! He should tell us why a suburb of Accra was named Awudome, if he is indeed a historian of repute. Don't worry, folk, that is all covered in my coming series. I spilt it all!
1. The Asantes didn't "conquer" any area of Eweland on a permanent basis even though their actions and influence extended over much of Eweland in Ghana and western Togo which formed part of Krepi in the annals. Rather, it was the Akwamus, allies of the Asantes, who established their hegemony over northern Eweland known as Krepi. After the rebellion of Kwadzo Dei I of Peki in 1833 led to the partial liberation of that area from the Akwamu yoke, with no regular slave tributes being paid to the Akwamuhene, who also used to give some to the Asantehene, the area became a free for all slave raiding ground which also brought in Asante slave raiders on many occasions after the final defeat of the Asantes and alies in the Sagrenti War of 1874; a war partly precipitated by the raid led by the Asante Warlord Adu Boafo and kidnapping of missionaries and traders from Ho for ransom. So the Asantes raided for slaves in parts of northern Eweland but did not establish their authority in those parts, as they were fiercely resisted throughout. The area of northern Eweland where they established their hegemony is not part of Eweland.
2. There is no historical records of Anlos fighting Asantes, or the Asantes leading war parties against the Anlos. Anlos were already allied to the Akwamus before the foundation of the Asante Kingdom with the fall of Denkyira from 1700-2. By virtue of that, Anlos became part of the tripartite allies that some early Fante and European chroniclers denounced in very unpalatable terms.
The wars Dzidza referred to which Anlos fought were not fought against Asantes. The records are chronicled and so cannot be disputed. Prof. Amenumey's pocket size book, The Ewes Pre-colonial in Times, Sedco Pub. 1986, has given a succinct summary of those events and wars.
There is only one encounter of sorts b/n Asantes and Anlos following the final defeat of the Akyems in 1764 but is it shrouded in secrecy under the terms of friendship the Anlos and the Asantes forged. Not even the great Wilks was able to unravel that mystery even though he speculated about it in his defining book on the Asantes, The Asantes. Well, as he himself knew, the griots and elders don't tell the whole tale when researchers come knocking. I found out that before I was 10 years old when I was the only kid allowed to sit in on such interviews when the white men came with interpreters in the early '60s! What they played dumb about they argued hotly about whose version was correct once the researchers were gone! Sorry, you won't any of the versions from me either. At least not now.
Having said that, it is a testimony to that capacity of Africans to forgive which made some scholars to claim that Africans don't have a memory which can make me say, as a matter of fact that, Ewes from Krepi don't hate Asantes, Akwamus, etc, though they heartily detest Anlos though. Phew! Going to Mawuli School in the '70s was an eye opener. The vibes were heavy. I had to learn to speak with non-Anlo accent when I go to the Ha market or take taxi. As for we Anlos, we have no reason to hate Asantes and Akwamus prior to the advent of Busia and his PP in the late '60s but any such dislike is not generalised to ALL Akans.
Of course, I had already written abt the unwholesome encounter with the Akans in the Gold Coast which eventually led to the drive to secede. Rawlings wasn't even born then.

Besides, this was a

Mr. Boateng,
First off, there is no need to throw insults here. I am an Akan with relatives who have married people from all over Ghana including Ewes and our brothers and sisters from the North. I have cousins from the North and multi-millionaire business partners from the North. So, maybe you need to go have some coffee and re-read what I wrote.
My point is simply that this sort of dialogue doesn't help the greater good. If you're trying to diffuse a situation, you don't go into details about who started what as it may end up inciting others who then respond and then end up on an ethnically slurred merry go round.
Derogatory remarks about any one from any tribe or ethnic group is simply wrong. I agree with this. The writer's article is very skewed, not in his representation of the facts, but in how he interprets them. Clearly, he has an agenda: getting even with Mike Ocquaye, clearing Rawling's name and saying the Akans started this. None of which is particularly helpful to the dialogue of national reconciliation. So before you jump to conclusions about who I am, check your ability to read and understand English.

"...In the end, the question for Prof. Ocquaye to answer is:
Is Prof. Ocquaye an Akan?
How does pitting the Akans (as he constructs them in his mind) against the Ewes and Northerners serve the NPP’s cause?..."
This part of your intellectual exercise made me to understand or re-think about your motive for writing all this piece.
If Prof Ocquaye is not an Akan ,
1. Does it mean that he should not say anything he thinks is right about Akans?
2. Would you have written these history about the Anlos and the Asantes if your were not an Anlo, Dzidza?
3. I read what the Prof said. He made a point.
He asked Rawlings a question.
... Where is the tape or the recordings that Rawlings promised to deliver to the Northerners and Ghanaians in general, as his proof for his allegations?
..Why did Rawlings refuse to honor his promise?
NOw, Dzidza, think about these:
1.. If Prof Ocquaye is not an Akan but he is defending the Akans,
and
2.If you, Dzidza, is asking Prof.Ocquaye this question, and you are an Anlo,
Then,
The conclusion is that you wrote all these Anlo history, NOT out of patriotism or an acadamic exercise, but rather, out of 'Tribalism and Nepotism'.

you posed...
"Where is the tape or the recordings that Rawlings promised to deliver to the Northerners and Ghanaians in general, as his proof for his allegations?"
How does Rawlings merely stating that he had a tape culminated in Ewes and Notherners hating Akans? Did the mention of the tapes by Rawlings lead to any Ewe or Northerner taking bows and arrows to attack any Akan? Where and when? Did Rawlings saying that he had a tape led to Rawlings's children who are half Ewes, hating their mother Mrs. Konadu Agyeman, who is a full blooded Asante (Akan)? Did Rawlings ask Kennedy Agyapong to goad Asantes on to attack Ewes? Did Rawlings ask Ursula Owusu to insult Northerners telling them they are goat herders? You see, the subliminal message embedded in Mike Ocquaye's irresponsible and hollow allegation is to invoke the Rawlings factor as a hatred and fear mongering which helped the NPP to win both the 2000 and 2004 elections. But I have a message for you guys; the Rawlings' myth which helped propelled you guys to power in those two occasions was demystified by Akuffo Addo in 2012 when he entered Rawlings' house and proclaimed him a man of impeccable integrity. This therefore erases the fact that Rawlings has caused any tribal tension in Ghana but if you guys still hang on to this tenuous and misguided allegation, then Akuffo Addo equally shares the tribal game blame. For your information, I'm a 100% Akan and I don't see any Ewe or Northerner hating me due to what Rawlings said. It's hard some Akans learn to respect both Ewes and Northerners with name callings and insults because we are not better than anyone in Ghana.

And did Victor Owusu, as a national figure at the time, suppose to make such a sweeping statement in response to just one person? By the way, who was that so-called promiment statesman who made that statement and under what pretext did he make that statement?
Rawligns stating that he had a tape does not in any way, shape or form calls for tribal hatred. It could at best be described as michief or lying but causing Ewes and Northerners to hate Akans? How? By the way, the tape in question was in reference to Northerners so where did Ewes come into that equation? Or Ewes have become Northerners now?

I think Ghanaweb is bigining to publish some serious material and all this reconciliation going on here is good. What we need to know is that we are stuck with each other and the only choice is to move together as a nation. The writer has done a good historical account to show that the problem started well before Rawlings. In fact,Busia is a major contributor. It is well noting also that, I don't believe northerners/Ewes hate Asantes (Akans) nor Asantes Northerners/Ewes than they hate themselves and I say that on Authority. The bigger problem is our separate orientation. Just as most Akan see everybody with a non Akan/Ewe name as Muslim or northerner, most northerners saw any twi speaker as Asante. Obviously this is serious ignorance.

Princewilly, I think you've just repeated stereotypes. I have the names and bios of all the 29 Gold Coasters who made senior ranks by the eve of indep. One, the foremost, Maj. Seth Kobla Anthony, however had resigned from the Army to serve in civil capacity long before indep., so there were only 28 Ghanaian officers when we got indep.
Akans from the Gold Coast were adequately represented in the army and officer corps. It is only the former Asante Kingdom comprising the B/A too that was represented by Afrifa alone. Nothing strange about that as that area only joined the Gold Coast from 1946. Afrifah, of course, was just a mere student when Nkrumah became Leader of Govt Business and later Prime Minister.
Btw, my own father had officer training at Teshie in the early '60s, besides Police Officer training too. He was among the top civil servants Nkrumah trained up to be reservist officers and to bolster the image of the Army and caliber of the officer corps in case of any eventuality. They were not supposed to replace the professional soldiers, as the rumours before and after the coup had it.

The other day I wrote that the children of Gen. Acheampong and Kufuor's brother are in my family and they will call me uncle and granduncle. I wrote also about how some Ashantis run into kitchen to hide under Tornu women so to save their heads, when they were defeated by Ewhes.
The great grandchildren of those men live among Ewhes who accord to them the respect a person accords his brothers and sisters.
There have been patriotic Ashantis in Ghana and there are still some of them. The Jantuas, Kofi Bako, Nyan Asante and others have shown that Ghana and Ghanaians come first before any other tribe. Thus there was and there are still many Ashantis and Akans who believe that it is not a tribe that is the pride of the Earth, but the whole of mankind.
I Kwame I am an Anlo but I did not support Col. Emmanuel Kwesi Kotoka'a 24/2/1966 coup because unknown to people it is Anlo's and Ewhes in particular who had the blunt of that coup d'etat. Capt. Bokloe and Avevor were military officers who various occasions after the coup of 1966 brutalized political detainees. I happen to met Lt. Osei-Poku and Owusu Dzimah after their release from prison by Col. Acheampong, ate in the same plate with them and had jokes. The young military officers who staged the abortive coup on 17/4/1967 were just patriotic leftist military officers and not tribalist. Among the senior military officers they intend to hand over power was Maj. Sowu, an Ewhe.
Tribalism is a dangerous game and event which took place in Rwanda, Georgia and currently in Ukraine should be a reminder. The most dangerous one is when one of the tribes have a group of people who think that they are waving a big club behind them.
I read Rawlings comment and advise on the events in the Ukraine on the pate 17 of the "Daily Graphic" newspaper today and I am delighted. Efo Rawlings is maturing.

What is this thing about northerners/Ewes hating Asantes and the other way round? Northerners are killing northerners and Ewes have their own fights over chieftaincy and land. Do you see Asante in Yendi, Tamale, Bawku, Nayire (wa) causing a fight? Do you see any Ewe in Kumawu?

Kofi, Ghanaians deserve better. Prof Ocquaye with his classroom earned credentials and the inherited but unearned stature in Ghana as a professor in one of the few universities Ghana has to offer deserve not only tongue lashing but public shaming. He should decide if he is a moral honest intellectual with love of or for Ghana or a partisan hack willing to divide Ghana for political gain. The people in Ghana who bemoan insults should ask themselves one simple question; do we prefer insults and public shaming or lies and the potential for death caused by lies, fabrications and revisionism of our history through tribal lens?

IT IS ALSO INCORRECT TO ALIGN "AKAN" TO NPP. "AKAN" IS MADE UP OF THREE TRIBES NAMELY, "ASANTE, AKYEM AND FANTE" AND ONLY "ASANTE & AKYEM" ARE ALIGNED TO NPP. "FANTES" ARE GENERALLY NOT "TRIBALISTIC". FANTES VOTE OBJECTIVELY; YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT THE LATE ATTA MILLS, A FANTE,ONCE LOST IN FANTE AREAS.
