Kwame, I boldly asked that question, and I wish you had mentioned my name. The question does not mean that I was not saddened and shocked by Dumor's sudden death. Neither yours or Attafuah's euologies and those of several others have adeqautely answered my question: What were Dumor's achievement to the extent that he was being compared with Nkrumah and Mandela!
Let me add that this: "Death is a terrible, terrible thing; worse still is an unexpected death. There is nothing as devastating as losing a loved one. Komla Dumor's sudden death and the massive stream of eulogies coming from Ghanaian politicians (pen-armed robbers), the TUC (Trades Union Congress), Council of State (grand-parenting pen-armed robbers), Council of Churches, Ghana Journalists Association, etc. are signifiers of Komla's professionalism and dedication to his craft.
But we need to problematize the trajectory of such eulogies. Some of these constituencies listed above have suggested that the Ghanaian government should look after Komla’s kids; that a public edifice, e.g., the office of the Ghana journalists Association, should be named after/for him; that he should be given a state burial, etc. In fact, some think that Komla's achievements were as great as those of Nkrumah and Mandela! One Minister of State has said that Komla was greater than Ghana! Force the metaphorical or hyperbolic stretch out of the Minister’s public statement and it would still have elasticity of meaning, well-intentioned or not.
Debates are raging on Ghanaweb and public radio not so much about the outpouring of eulogies. Rather the concern is that we are moving from the cargo-cult (materialistic) mentality to another one aptly called TV-personality cult, perhaps due to the communications technology, the result of the unidirectional globalization.
Absolutely, there is no doubt that Komla had a fine mind, was a great human being, and a well-known TV/radio personality. But what are his achievements - working at the BBC instead of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation? That he was a good broadcaster? Yes, but does that merit a state burial? Did he work for and on behalf of Ghana? Nope. Did he train a generation of Ghanaian journalists? Nope. Was he able to Africanize news beamed to Africa by the BBC, or just read out news assembled by his superiors in the frame of the “Other”! The latter takes the day. As sad as his sudden death has gripped us all, we should contain our exaggerations regarding Komla's achievements.
There is a story of a dedicated teacher who taught for almost forty-five years and when he died his family didn’t have enough resources to bury him. Luckily, his students put their resources together and gave him a fitting funeral held at the school where he had taught. Such are the ones who deserve state burials, not those who never worked for the state or trained anyone. Is Anderson Cooper the co-equal of George Washington or Obama? Is Komla better than the Kwame Amamoos and Edward Fakyees, Godwin Avernorgbors of yesteryear GBC? Nope. Then again, the tyranny of time and the imposing regimes of technology may be summoned as lenses of clarification.

All the ppl who wrote moving eulogies for Komla, by your judgement, are not wise enough to know he did not merit what they wrote about him. Good, keep your wisdom to yourself and stop bothering us with your trash! You always support okoampa when he's vomiting his nonsense; now that he vomited one on you, you are here spewing garbage!

Come on folks! Need we clash matchettes on this article? "Can't we all get along", somehow? (my apologies to Rodney King, the victim of Police racially-motivated brutalities in Los Angeles, USA). And why can't a little humor help us release some of the tensions we often indulge in,here?
Given that the Prof. has always been the target of many of us for vilification, rightly or wrongly, he stated in the end that he referred to Ken in humor. So, we should not dwell too much on the little self-glorification by the Prof. when he claimed to be both: 1. possibly the most popular student in his Secondary School; and 2. indicating he was only returning a favor by pointing out some typographical error in Ken's piece. No braggadaccio intended, I believe.
We should allow people to review themselves and mitigate their otherwise offending comments. I hope, too, that Ken would not take offence at the Prof.'s referrence to him.
To the Professor, I would say he should not be embarrassed by Ken's transient amnesia. It is more common with us than he might think. I encountered similar shock when I made my very first contact with one Kwame Asare Boadu, a Journalist and a blogger, after some thirty plus years of incommunicado and separation. We were both room-mates for at least 3 years in the same Dormitory at ACHISCO in the 70s. But when I finally found the necessary information to reset our acquaintaince, Mr. Boadu could not remember a thing about me. My name did not even ring a bell to him. Strangely, however, he did remember well my cousin Effah-Manuh who was his Classmate and also shared our room with us, and my late beloved second cousin, Joe Gyekye, (executed by the PNDC for the failed insurrection led by Giwa) with whom he was a friend.
All this reminds me of the adage that "Life is short, opportunity transient" and unless some such opportunity is perculiarly intense and significant, we invariably lose memory of it.
Let's ease up our tensions a bit with humor as the Prof. meant part of his comment to be. Don't let us take offence too quickly.
Long Live Ghana!!!

If he cares to know, Komla is a typical Ewe from the very heart of Ewe land. The tribe that has always cause him sleepless nights. The tribe from which comes, the late Kofi Awunoor, whose death he and his Ashanti/Akyems folks so much jubilated. What a hypocrisy of a mentally derailed bigot!

Prof. Okoampah-Ahoofe, please grow up. You performed your poems on GBC in the late 1970s. I am inclined to believe about half of Ghanaweb readers were not even born by then. Be a model father/ big brother/ grandfather and Ghanaian. Please stop embarrassing all academics that ever obtained a Ph.D.
