Why Mahama why this greediness? You want your people to enjoy free education whilst other people pay huge sums of money for their childrens school fees.

GHANAian, I do not normally comment on tribal/racist articles but this one is certainly is not tribalism or racist. The article discusses a subject that is sensitive but must be discussed. In fact, whilst you accused SARPONG for fanning tribalism, the suggestions you made are actually dangerous and could lead to ethnic or tribal tensions in Ghana. You are suggesting that the President should discriminate in favour of the northern regions in the allocation of national resources. The share of the national cake should be fair, according needs and the resources available as well as other factors but not on ethnicity or the president's origin.
To be honest, I do not know how the free education policy for the three northern regions works. That is, whether you enjoy it if you attend public schools in those regions or anywhere in Ghana if you are from from any of the three regions.
My view is that the system has outlived its usefulness in the current situation and has become discriminatory against other Ghanaians. This is because, there are families in the other seven regions of Ghana who are as equally poor if not poorer as those in the three northern regions. For this reason, it's no longer acceptable to continue this discriminatory policy. However, I will not call for its abolition but rather, it should be means tested. That is, families who are well off and have a specified annual income should pay for the education of their kids.
At the same time, the same policy of means tested should be introduced throughout Ghana because poverty is not exclusive to only the three northern regions but across Ghana. For example, there are reports that certain parts of Central region are also very poor. I think a means tested free education policy across Ghana will be more beneficial bring equity than the current exclusive free education for the three regions.
That is what I expected Nana Akufo-Addo's free SHS policy to have considered rather than the free for all that he proposed.
I know had Nana Addo suggested the means tested it would have been rejected and even would have been accused of discriminating against northerners. For that reason, perhaps, President Mahama is the best person to implement the policy but has he got the guts to do so?
All future governments in Ghana should seriously consider the means tested free education policy in the three northern regions and extend the policy to cover the whole of Ghana.

Perhaps, back then, the aim of President Kwame Nkrumah and the guiding principle of his Government's Free Education for the people of the Northern Regions was trying to up the number of the educated citizenry.
Indeed, Nkrumah's Free Education Policy has been very useful. Today, many Northern politicians, including President Mahama, Doctors, Teachers, Businessmen and other professionals have themselves benefitted.
In today's Ghana, the notion that Northerners are 'poor' people and thus deserve such welfare dependency policies, it seems, should be considered by the Government. But I doubt if President Mahama will have the moral and political courage, under his leadership to do so.

Why should the country continue to provide freebies for northerners only? Sarpong is absolutely right. The affirmative action in Nkrumah's policy was to assuage their backwardness, they were by far the most primitive of all Ghanaians at the time of independence, this is not tribal but the unadulterated truth!

I think the President with all apology forgot to apply his communication skills. The statement, "I will not disappoint Northerners" is unfortunate. This is because you cannot rob Peter to pay Paul, the national cake must be shared equally without any discrimination. The issue of free education in the North must be looked at again because most Northerners have their sons and daughters schooling down South, don't they pay school fees? Meanwhile, some of the development projects should be sent up North to open up the place rather than heaping all projects in Accra, etc. Anyway, let us do away with tribalism and deal with nationalism.

I think those of you holding this opinion have the right to do so but you're ignorant of the facts that led to the institutionalization of the policy till date. Sarpong Justice wickedly and foolishly accused Prez Mahama and his father for abusing the policy because the Prez's late father supposedly had 19 children. What lame argument is this? Did I hear him say 50+ years is enough to bridge whatever gap created between the North and south as a result of the policies put then by the colonialist?
Ghana is 50+ years after independence yet we take aid from the UK, US, etc. Why are we not saying we are of age and therefore stop taking aid? The West duped us for several hundreds of years and that has left the problems we have today. so it is with the northerner of Ghana. The white man cheated us for you the southerners and therefore efforts are made to 'compensate' the losses. Why are the northerners in Nigeria with similar ecology not deprived like the Ghanaian northerner. You Ashantes are the most laziest in Ghana yet you like money, women, meat, drink, etc. Sarpong Justice should know that free education is not same as subsidies. The lies poured out by Bawumia during 2012 campaigns did little to secure the 'coke man' victory since his free SHS concept was known by well meaning Ghanaians as not feasible. Why did i single out your tribe, Ashanti only? Yes, because other tribes are decent, law abiding, responsible citizens and respect other people from different background.
When you sarcastically attacked Northerners, what response do you anticipate? And when no other person, than the President who also hails from the North responds to your rantings, here you come again to talk nonsense about the President .
Justice Sarpong, is it lack of proper parental care, an inherent gene of backwardness of your lot or both that makes it difficult for your tribe to adapt to proper norms?

If this would have been the first time, it would not have amounted to anything but when he said during the 2012 that he is from the North and therefore Northerners should vote for him, you people did not howl like lions complaining about it but if Akuffo Addo had entreated Akans to vote for him you fools would still have been talking about it.
When President Kuffour packed his cabinet with mostly Akans, you People complained but Mahama has packed his ministerial appointment with 65% Northerners despite the Northerners being only 16% of the population but Northerners are not accusing him of tribalism.

When during Election 2012 Mahama looked southerners in the face and told them that "Nana Akufo-Addo's free SHS policy would not work", he knew exactly what he was saying. If the playing field were levelled, his brother, Mahama Idrissu, Ibrahim Adam, Agambire and the rest of their crooked lot will lose the avenues through which they fleece the poor Ghanaian taxpayer.
Of course, the only people you can blame are the dirt poor in the Central and Western Regions and parts of Akyem and Krobo areas of the Eastern Region who buy their cock and bull political propaganda!

To argue on my first line, we should blame our successive Governments, who introduce, and keep certain policies and programmes as 'goodies' for that part of the country despite the concerns of their poor implementation and cost, for significant political gains.
Secondly, most people in the southern regions of Ghana, including some politicians and ex-Ministers of NPP Administration do know about this Free Education Policy. However, this issue is a "political hot potato" no Southern politician wants to handle.

"However this issue is a political hot potato no Southern politician wants to handle".
Exactly. This is an issue I will not blame the Southern Polititians for being quiet about. Any Politician who has a Presidential ambition will touch this issue especially if the said politician is an Npp member.
This policy should be poor based and not regionally but in Ghana where few people pay personal taxes because of our poor tax collection system, identifying the poor in society is a herculean undertaking. Still I believe the government can come up with a method to identify the poor in society and the policy tailored in that direction to help the poorest in society.
Is it fair for Agambire of RLG to have the option of educating his children free whilst Daavi a yoko gari seller or Yaa Boatemaa selling bread chasing cars on the dangerous Ghanaian streets to pay school fees?

Between the dirty stinky ungrateful northerner and their Ashante masters who are nkroasifour? Just take careful look at the towns and clean villages of the Ashante and compare that to your dejected stinky villages where you have disgustingly turned your children's classrooms into toilet shitting grounds, DOGS!
The northerners have had their Presidents, ministers, judges, engineers, Doctors, Lawyers, legislators, technocrats and all to say enough to accept their responsibilities.
Whilst they still enjoy free education same people voted against Nana Akufo Addo's national free SHS policy, how hypocrisy they are.
Between Mahama and his baboon criminal corrupt minister Collins Dauda alone, are 22 children, 11 each in this modern global social economic hardship and family control.

Justice Sarpong, it is quite clear that you did not research your subject well but rather engaged in diatribe. If you did you would have known that just one year after Kwame Nkrumah became leader of government business fee free education in Government schools was implemented in the then Gold Coast and has continued throughout Ghana till today. The free board and lodging in northern public secondary schools you are griping about was actually paid for by taxes levied by local authorities in the north. If the south wishes to copy that example that is welcome. In the interest of national development it would be better to engage in constructive criticism rather than invective, innuendo and inaccuracies.
