With strict supervision from AMA or the ministry of health, I think, it is better in private hands than AMA. What has become of our public latrines in the cities built by government and we all know where the monies will go if operated by government or AMA. I think it is time we encourage private hands to take up these challenges to create jobs by so doing.

Why should individuals be charged for using the washroom? Drivers must be charged. Tax payers money can make up the difference. People pay taxes to the government to defray the cost of public services.

First of all, let me congratulate the writer for devoting time to write this piece, considering the fact that many have been using those disgusting facilities but don't give a damn!
Secondly, I am surprised that it is only now that he has discovered the situation, if he indeed lives in Ghana. When I left Ghana for good in the mid-80s, it was like that; just a bit better. And when I visited in 1992/93 to collect data and traveled extensively along the triangle Accra to Cape Coast and then to Kumasi and back, I found the situation the same.
At Kejetia Lorry Park, I found in the urinal several days old human faeces! I went straight to the GPRTU office (they were building the new storey building for themselves then and have their own urinals for themselves) and engaged them in an argument. They told me a disgusted white man was allowed to use their toilet recently when I asked about foreigners seeing such squalor and filth in our "Garden City". I was told that they generated millions each month which they paid to the KMA whose responsibility it was to maintain such toilet facilities and the station which was just a muddy, pot-holed patch then. I told them that was a wrong policy. They should have hired people to clean up on a daily basis, maintain those facilities and pay the KMA the balance of whatever the commuters have been paying to the drivers from which they get their share for themselves and the KMA. Yes, just like all businesses do: they clean and maintain their own toilets! The GPRTU should build and maintain those toilets since they are in charge of the lorry parks! They should asphalt all the stations too!
At Asafo Lorry Park, One Man One Seat, or so they called it, I found out they DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A TOILET for the traveling public! I was asked to go and pee in an open gutter in the middle of the station b/n parked vehicles! Seriously?! I thought the man was joking! Of course, a hot argument ensued again and the GPRTU staff there who refused to identify themselves blamed the graduates who designed the station. A few weeks later, there was a big fire at the Asafo Market and there was no water hydrants to help in quenching it quickly!
I took up the issue with many people, starting from my own family to friends. Hmm! Our snr graduate, a product of Schl of Admin returned from lecturing in Nigeria and drove his Peugeot from the Novotel Park to Aflao in the early '80s before returning to his profession when remunerations improved. He was the GPRTU Treasurer while there. We ganged on him (his wife then inclusive) and blasted him well, well until he put his head in his hands! He said when they the graduates tried to change conditions at the stations, he was told, "Efo, we were here before you came". So when you got what took you there you leave.
When I mentioned forming a Commuters Association to some KNUST graduate friends, they stared at me as if I was from Mars, and they were mice being asked to go bell the cat!
Well, I was thoroughly disgusted with everything in Ghana and left on Eastern Monday 1993 and never went back again until Dec. 1992. I took back to Norway my daughter whom we wanted to go to school in Ghana, having heard on BBC how Ghanaians in the UK were sending their kids to back to school there. Coming to live in the UK explained why. It is another kind of jungle for the struggling masses holed in the Council flats and poor areas in London, etc.
I mentioned all this on the Okyeame forum in the mid-90s and bemoaned the situation and suggested how to tackle them. A Commuters Assoc. had since then been formed but I am clueless what they do except complain about increased fares when petrol prices are hiked.
Until the commuting public becomes civilised and sophisticated and realised that they are paying for the cost of all those private vehicles and the GPRTU and some of the transport fares should be put into maintaining those stations, things would remain like that for a long time to come. Right now, when it rains, the stations are turned into muddy patches. What I have been seeing on JoyNews at 8 on Sky Channel 229 here in the UK often depict worst conditions than 30 years ago at some lorry parks and markets, not to mention school buildings in disrepair.
It is horrible and when I hear Nigerians and others praising Ghana, I tell them to shut up! We had seen better in the 1960s.
