All Governments in the past have carried out this exercise time and again. These "recycled" politicians, family members and those deserving rewards of various sorts are often posted as Ambassadors. As Ghanaian our greatest luck is that the countries that these people are posted to, are often on the "diplomatic fringes" of Ghana's Diplomatic Map. These postings are not to Critical partners Nations like the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, France etc.

Ambassadorial appointments are traditionally used to dispose of dead wood; ineffectual buffoons who muck up domestic policies, or stand in the way of progress. Using that criterion or standard, the appointments are terrific! Bokor's commentary displays a fundamental misunderstanding of the history of diplomacy and diplomatic appointments. He should stick to his job as a teacher and leave critical commentary to those well schooled in politics and policy. Not every thought should be documented in writing, and when written most thoughts should be crumpled and dumped in a waste bin. This qualifies as one of those.

At least the guy has insulted no one, as some others do. His thoughts on paper are reasonable; he says that the least that official representatives of Ghana could do is to serve the interest of our brothers and sisters living in those countries. Let these new diplomats add economic diplomacy to the very basics that Mr. Bokor expects of them and Ghana would be better off.

This author asks the question, then answers the question. Very good. I do agree with you, however the practice of giving diplomatic posts to political persons is very widespread and its something that every government does. The United States does it - witness Barack Obama giving the post of US Ambassador to Japan to Caroline Kennedy who has no diplomatic experience whatsoever. Her grandfather Joe Kennedy was given the post of US Ambassador to Great Britain two generations or so ago. A President - any President, has the right to choose whom he (or she) wants to represent him (or her) in foreign capitals. The author is correct that Ghana's diplomats in foreign capitals have been ineffective and very self serving. Hopefully we will grow up and our diplomats will begin to think in terms of serving Ghana. Hopefully they will acquire sufficient self confidence that they will be effective in pursuing our national objectives. Hopefully. Not in my lifetime though!
First time counter against NDC affairs.
nice apolitical piece
