YOU SEE, MY BROTHER, WHEN YOU HAVE USELESS UNIVERSITIES IN GHANA CHURNING OUT HALF-BAKED GRADUATES WITH WORTHLESS DEGREES AWARDED WITHOUT MERIT, LIKE THOSE OF THE SUCCESSIVE "LEADERS" WE HAVE IN GHANA, WHAT YOU'VE INDICATED IN YOUR THOUGHT-PROVOKING WRITE-UP IS EXACTLY WHAT'S COLLAPSING GHANA'S ECONOMY, NOT LOW AND AFFORDABLE UTILITY TARIFFS.
THE MANY MANY YEARS OF THE PRACTICE OF THOUGHTLESS NEPOTISM IN GHANA IS THE PRIMARY CAUSE OF GHANA'S ECONOMIC AND MANY OTHER WOES.
VICTORIA HAMMAH'S COMMON KNOWLEDGE RECENT "REVELATION" PROVIDED THE PERFECT "ICING ON THE CAKE".
A SMALL POOR LOAN-DEPENDENT COUNTRY LIKE GHANA HAS A WHOPPING 275 MPs WHOSE CONSITUENCIES ARE NOTHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT.
ALL OF THESE REDUNDANT BUSY-ABOUT-NOTHING" MPs ARE PAID EVERY DAMN MONTH BY GHANA'S POOR TAX PAYERS FOR ABSOLUTELY NO WORK DONE WHATSOEVER TO JUSTIFY EVEN THEIR 4-YEARLY GRATUITY PAYMENTS, LET ALONE THEIR MONTHLY SALARIES AND THE MANY MANY MOUTH-WATERING ALLOWANCES THEY COLLECT.
GHANA'S USELESS "LEADERS" JUST HEAP UP THE PUBLIC DEBTS, AND IMPOSE THE PAYMENT OF THOSE DEBTS ON GHANA'S POOR TAX PAYERS IN SEVERAL WAYS.
THE EXTORTIONATE UTILITY TARIFFS COMES INTO PLAY HERE AS ONE OF THE MANY EXTORTIONS BY GHANA'S SUCCESSIVE USELESS LEADERSHIP OF POOR LONG-SUFFERING GHANAIANS.
THE SAD ASPECT IS GHANAIANS CONTINUE TO REMAIN ALOOF TO ALL THESE EXTORTIONS BY GHANA'S SUCCESSIVE LEADERSHIP.
SO, IN CONCLUSION, GHANAIANS ARE BEING TREATED LIKE THAT BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALLOWED THEMSELVES TO BE TREATED BADLY BY THEIR SUCCESSIVE LEADERSHIP.
WE SHALL ALL CONTINUE TO SWIM IN THE SHIT!!!

sometimes lets leave politics aside and face the facts. the write is perfectly on point witg this piece. whether kuffour created them or not, we need to be analytic and considerate in running the affaira of this country. a nation as small as this has this much ministers and deputies just bcos politicians want to satisfy their fellow creedy comrades. very soon we will have a ministry for feeder roada and one for rural areas, another for urban areas.

I agree with Sarpong. Mahama will do himself "tremendous" good if he takes the Sarpong's advice. Actually, that alone will set him apart from his predecessors. But can Mahama--who so far seems to be a weak president do it?

The government has to show that they are also "tightening" their belt--before exacting austerity on the masses. Other wise it is akin to telling a young guy not to smoke--while you are smoking.

Apart from the finance, health, education, and food and agric ministries,, all the other deputy ministers should be sacked and their roles played by the chief directors in the various ministries. Thanks for the article Sapong.

Emmanuel, this is a good piece. Given Ghana's population size, poor socio-economic development, and huge foreign/national debt, there's the urgent need to overhaul Government ministries as well as reduce the number of ministers and deputy ministers. Currently, we have one too many deputy ministers per ministry. At least, a minister and a single deputy minister will be a step in the right direction as a cost-effective measure.
Clearly, most of the ministries have been created by both NDC and NPP Governments for political gains. This has increased the country's wage bill. We need a smaller, effective and efficient ministries to run government business.

Here is the ministries we need, Health, Finance, Education Science and Technolgy, Labor Youth and Social welfare, Agric, Transport,Interior, Communication, Local Govt and Environment and Defence. These 11 Ministries are all we need.
I blame the framers of the 1992 constitution and Rawlings for this. The 1979 Constitution put a limit on the number of ministers the President could appoint. Why that was left out in the 1992 constitution beats my magination
