This bill is entirely home grown in Ghana by its own plant breeders, not foreign corporations. Ghanaian plant breeders have excellent skills, training, and experience, but are left to subsist on government salaries. They developed and pushed this bill to parliament so that they can profit from their life's work- and why not?
Right now farmers don't have access to good seed because breeders don't have any incentive to push the seeds out to the public. If they were able to profit from their innovations, it would ensure that farmers have access to good quality seed.
I invite you to go out to the field- the varieties that have been "painstakingly" developed over "centuries" are broken down and are low yielding. Obatanpa, by far the most popular variety in Ghana was developed in a lab in the 1990's by Ghanaian researchers. 20 years later (hardly centuries), it is time to get improved varieties out into the hands of farmers.
Don't turn this into a GMO issue FSG- your alarmist fear mongering is wearing on all of us!
