Mahama's strategy of hiding his inefficiencies by making childish inexcusable comparisons is not fooling majority of Ghanaians who are in tune with the enormous economic problems facing the country and instead of the President sitting down with his Economic team and coming up with workable solutions instead has turned this into auspicating at Churches. Mahama has this self-delusion of being a better communicator which most times gets him in trouble because he comes across in his effusions as being ill-informed and illogocal. He should stop promising better times ahead and act now. We should subject Mahama into analysand to ensure if he is a Presidential material at this time when the country is on the precipice of falling into an economic abyss. Mahama's illogical comparison of Ghana to countries like USA, Germany, UK and Japan shows that he has no clue of the problems Ghana is in at the moment.

Out of anger, you compare today's USA to today's Ghana, a thing the President never did. The President in his church interaction compared the USA in their early years with Ghana's. And if you're not a student of history, you would forget that the USA is more than 200 year today. So you missed the first point.
One thing we must bear in mind when we discuss issues of public interest is the issue of over politicization, and cynicism that is inherent in our hearts. Anger, dislike against someone or a group of people can cloud our reasoning (no malice intended, just calling our attention to our nature as a people). This said, let me say a few things:
There is no denying the fact that we are in hard times. And this is very much so because our hikes in Petroleum prices and utility tariffs. Again, Government revenues are not flowing as needed. We have had a year-long energy crisis that has impacted industry. The worst challenge we faced was (excuse my choice of words) senseless election petition for 8 long months. What that petition did to us as a people is what is immediately manifesting in our economy and body politic, and for me, we need to do something quickly and that is this: either we review our constitution to liken that of Kenya to shorten election petition hearings, or we scrap that election petition all together out of our constitution. Believe you me, some mean ill-heartened person can take us on another senseless election petition in the future, mark my words.
The election petition did the following: It made the President to hesitate in doing some of the things he would have done given that he was not challenged. Key macroeconomic decisions were delayed. Key appointments to boards and corporations were equally delayed. The President did not have that courage to take very stiffer decisions to deter worker agitation and strikes, and so those happened. What I meant to say is this, this government would have increased utility tariffs much earlier than now, and the increases would not have been this deep. The modest increases would have spared resources for some other government spendings that could re-engineer growth. President Kuffour immediately increased petroleum and utility tariffs. President Miss did same. Even President Rawlings after the 1996 elections did same. So given a stable political climate, things would have been better.
But truth be told. We brought this upon ourselves as a people. We like to pride ourselves with the first to do this, and that. Let us be the first to swim in such hard times as we brought upon ourselves. Any smart government will do the same thing that this government is doing. Remove all subsidies and recover cost fully. Widen the tax and innovate new ways of taxing the citizenry. Ask Osafo Marfo and he will remind you of imposing levies on profits from Banks and other business as stabilization levies or reconstruction levies. The business community have always paid the price when governments get to such levels, afterall, the government is creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. so for me, all of these are noise and much ado about nothing.
President Mahama will be unwise to waver on what people are talking about. For me, he should stick to his game plan, institute all the austere measures, stabilize the economy in the next year (2013 and 2014) and begin to meet his constituents (Ghanaian citizenry) demands for development in infrastructure etc. Suggestions that he reduces the workforce are very unwise decisions to take. No Modern government will do such thing. so please stop suggesting what is not feasible.

There is no justification of Mahama's comparing Ghana to these countries. The mess in the country is attributed to their own cause and Sarpong is exactly right. When Ghana oil started flowing, Mahama and his colleagues rushed to increase salaries for MPS and the executives without thinking afar. They thought Ghana has now reached the promise land with oil. They went ahead to create constituents for elections purposes which subsequently increased the number of MPS to 275. I would be glad to know the population in these new districts created because it doesn't make sense.
All that Sarpong has raised is what need to be done if they want to get out of this mess. In the USA, most of the Senators and congress men have offices in their constituents and only go to DC when the house reconvene. But in Ghana, you will find all the parliamentarians in Accra living in luxurious mansions. Those that have not been given accommodations are asked to stay in hotels temporary at the cost of the state. In all the government departments or offices, you can find over ten workers in the same office and some of them with ties to the head of the department don't come to work regularly and still receive salary. In Ghana, you can choose to report two times a week and still receive full salary at the end of the month. While, in the advance countries the number of hours you work determine your pay. I would be glad to know if a government worker in Ghana is ever been fired/sacked? Here in the USA, government trim the number of workers if it feel they are too many.
The reason why we are suffering from bad economies for decades is that past and present gov'ts want to do things that will only get them re-elected period. Ministers and civil servants will embezzle funds and go free. The president down to the last person in the gov't always protect these looters with the fear of loosing electorates from where the person's home town. I don't like the way Mahama is going about things right now. I am a dagarti guy and many would expect me to support him because I come from the north. But hey man, I will not support people blindly. Mahama should minimize his talking and work closely with the key people in his gov't to find solutions to the ailing economy. If he see that some of his appointees are undermining his work, fire them and replace with serious ones. But if he want to protect the wrong doers for the sake of 2016 votes, then he will fail woefully.
In America, congress men and senators resign from their post themselves if the public find he or she guilty of something. The Ghanaian public worker will never resign even after been caught red handed will deny and the president will look on unconcern. That SSSP program must be scrap before it take them far. I learned the finance minister mentioned that the single spine is not sustainable going forward. So they should reverse it otherwise, workers strike will continue unabated. Sarpong, I hope the authorities in Ghana read your article and think about in their sleep.

If you meant the President was comparing our 50 yrs to that of over 300 yrs USA, what does that mean to you? Are you saying the President was telling us to wait for another 100 years or so? You want us to believe this Ananse story when you and your ilk were calling JAK and NPP names for doing nothing. Why do you think the People voted for Mahama and not keep NPP. And you are here writing about someone missing the point! Educated elites who have had their bellies filled will at all cost defend anything that emanates from the seat of the government so that they will continue to keep their sticky and stinky hands in the Nation coffers.
During the election petition, the President said he wasn't bothered about the election petition and he is going on with his business as usual. But just to find excuses for your party and president, you want to twist and turn his words and blame Akufo and NPP for causing all these problems that the government is facing. How pathetic could that be, when someone used his constitutional rights to challenge the election? Why did you not blame Atuguba and his equally useless judges who decided to allow Tsikata to do whatever he wants at the supreme court and spent weeks on Bawumia asking stupid questions, but could not contain themselves when Addison decided to do the same? Whose fault was it, the constitution or the useless SC judges?
Widen the taxes and removing the subsidies you say? Did you think through what you wrote before posting it? How could he widen the taxes when the President himself doesn't pay taxes and many of his Minister enjoy unaccountable freebies, including entertainment allowances? Where were you when it was recently found out that a CEO of GIPC who is MP in your party did not pay tax in all the years he worked there? What is Mahama doing about it? To you, to widen taxes means, to burden the poor in our society and not the "rulers" or the rich in our society. How has this government done to retrieve our monies from WOYOME, WATERVILLE, ISOFOTON, GYEEDA and the rest? Did the election petition put a stop to those cases? To remove subsidies, and yet you don't see anything wrong with what Sarpong wrote about reducing over-bloated appointments for useless ministries like information and numerous entourage accompanied him and staying in 5 star hotels in America to take pictures at CNN? How blind could you be?
Adams take your own advice and swallow your medication- your affiliation with Mahama and NDC has clouded your reasoning. You are a moral leper and don't have any moral compass to lecture us on this. And btw, there ain't no game plan coming from Mahama.

Mahama and Ndc are not managing our economy well not because of the poor excuse of the election petition. Whst has election petition got to do with the government not having money to pay contractors or undertake new projects?
Ghanaians and Africans to a large extent don't like to face reality and the reslity in Ghana is that, we have too many government employees. Go to any ministry in Ghana and you will see three people doing the work one person should be doing.
The reality is that, the employees salaries have ballooned to 75% of all government revenue
Seventy five pesewas of every cedi collected by the government is spent on paying workers. Another twenty pesewas is spent on interest payment on loans leaving only five pesewas for government to work with which is not enough to even support one ministry.

Adding more workers on government payroll through board appointments which will have no positive impact on the economy is not the answer. What you Adam is failing to accept is thst, even the Ndc own Finance Minister has identified government workers wages as the biggest problem facing the country. The world Bank has attributed the slow down in economic growth in Ghana to high government workers pay and massive loans this government has contracted.
Our development partners who support our budget with at least 25% of government spending every year are withholding their contribution unless the government trims its expendicture on government employees.
Mahama should stop making ridiculous comparisons. USA spends less than 5% of its budget on federal workers salaries, Japan, Germany and UK spend less than 10% of their budgets paying government workers and Mahama is not looking at those numbers.
Mahama is just waitin on God to make things better without willing to make the tough decisions to turn the economy around.
Adam, keep tap dancing around the problem and you will wake up one day to reality when Ghana becomes Greece of Africa.

Nana, our country is not just only in the C/ICU, but also in coma. Just as coma is a medical emergency, our Nation is in emergency department and it needs a serious, swift and sharp action to preserve its life. Unfortunately, the doctors (RULERS, carefully chosen here and not leaders) that Ghana has been entrusted into their care are not only incompetent, but heartless. Ghana might not get the help it needs from these idiotic doctors, the family members (electorates) have to come together and remove their patient (Ghana) from the hands of these doctors and demand good care from better doctors. Else, Ghana will die. Period.
Your 10-point treatment plan to bring back Ghana from coma is spot on. We might have to amend the constitution for it to happen and that is why we need a pragmatic and selfless leader to begin with these plans. I am wondering what has come out of the Constitutional Review that Mills spent our money on? The first thing that should be done is to allow the electorates to CHOOSE their own REGIONAL MINISTERS and DCEs. This should be done at all cost to remove "yes men" from our body politic. Why can't this be done on the same election day?
My 11th plan would be to abolish the useless and abused scholarship secretariat office that keeps on sending sons and daughters of party officials to study classics, history, geography, literature and even some of the sciences in weird places. So far, I don't believe that we know how many international students Ghana is spending on. Nana, you would not believe that Ghana is spending over $100,000 on some students to get their undergraduate degrees. And when they are done with the schooling, these people will not even come back to the country. What is the purpose of doing this to the country?
While South Africans are complaining about their medical students who returned from Cuba inadequately equipped, we are sending 250 sub-standard students or footsoldiers to Cuba at unknown cost. If Cuba could do it, why can't we do it? Are we suffering from poverty of ideas? And why do we still subsidize the training of our medical students here for them to flee from the country right after their housemanship? Can't they be bonded for at least some years after their training. But guess what, those who leave the country are the rich ones, while the poor ones stay at home because they don't even have money to leave.
Like I said, I don't have anything to add to yours except the 11th commandment here. The Constitutional Review should be looked into and all amendments that were suggested or proposed should be implemented. Thank you for your concern for our Nation. Unfortunately, the wicked educated elites who were here screaming for Mahama before and after the election have stopped writing those nonsense. I can imagine their loaves of bread being buttered by the "stealers" and therefore don't find it necessary to complain anymore.

From outrageous import duties to excessive phone call charges along with high utilility tariffs, the Ghanaian is being with taxed to death. This is unsustainable and something needs to be done. It is sad that Ghanaians pay more phone and internet charges than virtually anywhere else in the world. Yet service is poor and infrastructure is lagging behind. This is sad. This government is corrupt, clueless and must go.

Mr. Sarpong, it seems to me that you've just received the holy ghost. Out of nowhere you've been able to see with both eyes. Much as I applaud you with your unique suggestions, tell us where you were when Kufour and his entourage were trooping in and out of the country like somebody was after them but just to rake in per diem. Or were you not here on earth when again Kufuor knighted himself and his cronies with gold chains(nkoso-nkoso) for no job done? Posterity will not forgive me if I don't lay before you the looting of the nation's lands and funds that were meant for the development of the nation which they diverted for their personal use. You talked about reducing the number of MPs and the Ministers. You and I were here when Kufuor went ahead to call for more constituencies to be formed with its equivalent MPs. Don't get me wrong, you have the right to criticize the government but don't be too partisan or lopsided when doing so. I believed sometime ago that if any government could resuscitate this country, it should be the NPP but boy was I wrong. The atrocities that the NPP caused this nation has sent them to opposition and I don't think this nation is ready to forgive and forget in the immediate future or soon.

Go back to the memory lane and retrieve the news item when Kuffour decorated himself with gold like 50 Cents. I was amongst the first to criticize him by coining the term "Bokassarization" for behaving like the former Central Africa Republic President, Bokassa who vrowned himself as an Emperor.
Now talking of Kuffour's travels which were excessive, it yielded the needed results that made life a little better compared to the hell on Earth Mahama haa brought to Ghanaians.
The point is that, Kuffour and Npp are not ruling the country now, Mahama and Ndc are. Ghanaians kicked Npp out after Mahama promised Heaven on Earth.
