Why should we pray and beg for peace just because of this verdict? I can't and won't understand those who are praying and persistently asking people to accept this verdict. WHY?
I don't also understand people who are asking NDC or any other not to go to court to challenge any election if they found anything wrong with it. What is the basis of their argument?
Are we animals? I think we have come to accept what the west think of us. If there is an election in Africa and they don't see blood flowing, then it is free and fair. And so anytime we are going to polls, we begin to pray and fast and beg human being who have been blessed with brains to act like humans. How? That maudlinism should stop.
No, we are not animals, and we should be free to discuss our problems without fear or anything. we should not think a minute that we will go to war just because Akufo has lost or Mahama was going to win. Those who wanted to be violent projected their violent tendencies on others. And they should be ashamed of themselves. I said it many times here, Akufo will accept the verdict and call for his people to obey the laws. And I was right. It would have been worse, had it gone against NDC people.
We need to learn from this and re-tool the EC to help us. If we could do that, then it would not even matter if NDC or any other party takes the EC to court to seek a recount or review of the election.
1- We need to change the election date. That is the first thing we should do. It is too close to the inauguration date. We can bring it to November to allow enough time for any challenge or a 2nd round off. In 2008, the final run off was Dec 28th, and the inauguration was on the 7th. Yet we did not see reason to make a change. Or we can also move the inauguration forward.
2-The EC should not force themselves to give us the results in 3 or 4 days. Still there are boneheads who think Afari Djan was right to ask NPP to go to court and yet still insult Akufo for doing that. Having time to listen to any complaints from any of the party leaders is good, not only for the grievance party but the EC itself to learn something about their work. Just telling complainants to go to court was stupid and Atuguba was right to tell him to be careful in his retort- "go to court, go to court." A clever way of telling him to stop that behavior and listen to others.
3- EC should be accountable to a review board or some kind of body. It looks like Afari has unlimited power and could do whatever he likes. When you don't have enough money and time to train your staff, it is silly to find time and money running around to create more constituencies. Have we thought of how these clueless 45 new MPs will cost the taxpayers annually? over 5000 GHC alone in salary. I am not talking about their allowances, car loans or gift or anything. Just salary alone.
4-The Constitution needs to be amended to force the Supreme Court to settle any election dispute less than a month before the inauguration. I think the SC judge allowed unnecessary things to be introduced into the court because they had all the time to sit on the case. It should not be like that.
If we had this in place, would it be wrong to see another party going to court or the President having the burden of being challenged after he had been sworn in. The reason why we are where we are is, we refuse to learn and make correction on our mistakes. IT is simple.
