We all quickly jump to blame all our failures on one person or a few who would dare tackle our problems with whatever imperfect tools available, after we insensitively perenially refuse to address the problems, or change our evil ways.
We need not revisit this re-writing of history anymore. The only wise thing to do is to identify our errors objectively and begin to address them, finding effective ways to avoid their recurrence. Where were the likes of this professor when the Managers of our few distribution outlets like the UTC, UAC, GNTC colluded with traders to create artificial shortages, hoarding everything from Medicines to Bic Ballpoint Pens; from razor shaving blades to Cement; from fuel to Cloths?
Where was the Professor when the Regime of Kutu and Akuffo neglected our Doctors and Hospitals to usher in our first strike by the Healthcare Providers leading to the needless deaths of many? Where was the Professor when our Cocoa was left to rot in the Buying Depots even after purchasing them from Farmers? More, funds stopped flowing in for further Cocoa purchases, leaving our Farmers in a grave dilemma that later gave birth to Smuggling of the Cocoa outside.
As much as the Businesses the Professor mentioned deserved better arbitration to resolve the tax problems cited for their maltreatment, not all of them were clean and obeying our Commerce Laws. And, Appiah-Menka had himself to blame for cheating the Western Chiefs he represented out of their payments on their Land. He was found culpable for illicitly taking over resources that he initiated his Industries with. Unless the Professor wants to tell us it is okay to illegally acquire others' resources to embark upon an Enterprise that may turn to be successful, commercially, he should recognize Mr. Appiah-Menka's mistakes that made. Obviously, he knew under which Administration or Political environment he could be left alone to pursue his ambition. So, he became an active opponent of the folks that took him to task, and that is understandable. But please, spare us your factually deficient biases. How do you explain the Divestiture Rawlings initiated to privatize our State-owned Enterprises, if he was so anti-Capitalist?
So, do not act like all these folks were some totally innocent, infallible folks. It is most unfortunate that they got entangled in the mesh of circumstances that called for urgent radical change in our Nation like most of us in various dangerous ways.
We should remember that Ghana had long become chaotic with runaway Kalabule system that was crippling the Nation. To the previleged few life might have been tough; to the rest of us life was at the brink of survival and most of the previleged just did not care to push the existing Administration to change. That is why Rawlings and his AFRC were received well by majority of Ghanaians from all over the Nation.
Surely. The excesses were most regrettable. But we should be fair in acknowledging the vicious role some us played in precipitating the environment that brought them in.
No doubt J.J. and his teams could have done more. And we should denounce the inhuman excesses known to have occurred and try to prevent repetition of those. But we should refrain from the ever-growing emotional toxicity with which some are re-writing the facts we lived with In the past.
I am not out to sing praises of J.J. But I do not think we are doing ourselves and our posterity any good if we twist the facts on our Nation as they were for some personal or parochial political reasons.

Of course he knew some of those soldiers that went on rampage during the coup were Akan soldiers. Some of those that drove Rawlings to go after some of the Ashanti business men were
Akan like PV Obeng. And he is aware that some of the business men arrested were indeed corrupt and making life difficult for many poor Ghanaian folks.
His aim is to see Ghana separated and or ruled by a supremacist regime to carry out his ever sought after revenge. But thank God sensible Ghanaians like you gives us hope that all isnt lost.

I have been thinking thoughts similar to that written here by Professor Okoampa-Ahoofe. Over the years, I have reflected on Rawlings' time at the helm of Ghana's affairs and how utterly rapacious it was. In the heyday of the "revolution", squads of heavily armed soldiers would be dispatched to the houses of these hapless business people. The houses would be surrounded and the inhabitants thoroughly intimidated. Usually these squads were led by commissioned officers with the rank of Lieutenants or Captains or Majors. A top to bottom search would be conducted and all monies found would be seized. The target business people are then "arrested" and sent to a military detention center. All these actions are taken with no legal basis. Any monies seized disappeared. Years later, the officers who led these operations suddenly had large amounts of money to build houses. Corruption was rampant from top to bottom during the revolution. The revolution was more like a "hijack" operation. Rawlings went from being a yorke-gari borrowing lowly military officer to being a very rich oligarch. Make no mistake, he uses his wife for cover but the huge amounts of money he accumulated are firmly in his control, in various bank accounts in places like South Africa, Cayman Island, Lichtenstein. His henchmen similarly accumulated riches. No matter how much he has accumulated, he does not like to see anyone who looks like they are also making money. Petty jealousies and envy. He uses these very well as political tools. He gets away with it because there are enough Ghanaians who also share this tendency to jealousy and envy of other people.

Thanks for a wonderful piece. That is exactly what his revolution was all about. The massive transfer of state assets and economic resources Of Ghana to his people. Today, Rawlings and his cronies and his Anglo mafia sit at the economic pinnacle of the county and lording it over everybody else, especially the Akans. Rawlings in 24 yrs with brutality in the guise of a revolution engineered a massive transfer of State wealth to the Anglo people and NDC cronies. People of Akan stock who had built their bussiness from the ground up were stripped of their hard earned earnings and handed over to his people. All this done under the threat of the gun. He rid the security froces of all high ranking Akans and subtituted them with Anglos. Listen to the names of the high ranking personnel in the security forces. Today, the security forces of Ghana has become a political wing OF the NDC. Schorlarsips from Ghana were awarded to the Anglos who went outside to study . Also look at the government institutions and see the people at the helm. Rawlings also murdered any one whom he perceived as a threat. So in more than one way he reigned in the political scene and dominated it for a long time without a gain for the average Ghanian but his Anglos. Then engineered the Anglos to sit at top of the economic totem pole. Then, to matain all those achievements, populated the security forces wiyh Anglos to protect himself. Rawlings murdered people of Akan stock for less than $100,000.00 . Today His party pay MIllions to their cronies and the govt is happy. He chastised Mills until they ultimately killed him. The man was sick to campaign. They were nervous to loose the election and they killed him. Under Mahama he has been paid,to keep his mouth shut; upon all the millions he paid Himself in those 24 Yrs he lorded it over Ghanains.We the people must arise and do what ever is necessary.
